In regards to USB tethering, there is a seperate thread for those that havee the update which states that the PC Internet option under USB Settings is removed with this update. That setting allowed for USB tethering without a tethering plan with ATT.

I have seen no improvement on the GPS Navigation. However, since my car has GPS Nav, I do not really use it that much. I mostly use GPS for Foursquare and that is on and off accurate.

I do have a question for the group. Anybody uses the WAZE application? It is a user-based real time traffic application. It works like a charm, always reports my location dead on, even when google navigation does not work.

Just wondering why this app works and not others.

It seems to be working better as far as tracking, but not great. Not a huge improvement I mean. I could never get it to lock using google maps (ran by itself) before the update, but yesterday I could after the update. I used to always have to use Google Navigation to get it to get a lock, then switch to other apps. In general though, my GPS was working before and improved only slightly now. Seems to be better tracking.

I tracked my route all the way home (about 30 minutes). It ate the battery and started getting hot, so it might be using more power for GPS, not sure.

The phone seems to run smoother or faster in general though.

It doesn't matter if you had rooted or not, the update should work. Mine did.

D

I've got to fall into the "better, but not fixed" crowd. It located me yesterday much faster and more accurately, but when I compared GPS Test on my captivate with my friends Droid Eris, he was getting more locks than I was, even though we could see the same number of satellites (to be fair, I live in a heavily wooded area).

It worked great yesterday after the update.

Today, it's sporadic. This morning it took 10 minutes to lock then lost it, and it was sporadic all day.

So it went from "doesn't work AT ALL", to "works 100%", to "works sporadically, often inaccurate, doesn't keep up, often loses the lock on and off".

I'm going to throw my hat into this ring. Prior to the update, it was at least usable to me. Now, even if GPS test says it sees 7-8 satellites, it refuses to lock, making it worthless.

Here is my update experience;
Unlocked, Unrooted, no other updates, fixes...

I tried many of the GPS fixes from XDA to little help, GPS would take several minutes to lock, then lose then lock again, i have seen many posts about that.
I restored my GPS settings to default before downloading the update. The update went well with no issues, recieved the congrats message in about 10 mins (with edge...).
I Tried the GPS and it wouldnt lock for many minutes, i was not happy! So i figured i had nothing to lose and played with the GPS settings again finding that nothing helped. I was beginning to give up, so i set my GPS settings back to default, and this time noticed the Delete GPS Data button in the LbsTestMode and clicked it, rebooted and now, at least for today, i get 7 or more sat locks within 20 seconds from a bootup, and less than 10 seconds with the phone running, (toggling on and off the GPS), consistently.
I dont know it this will be permanent, but for now its better. Maybe deleting GPS data helps? I will update my status later.

Okay, mine locks quickly and accurately in stationary setting. I tried turn by turn navigation and it was horrible. I got a lock but it was way off. Then I started driving and it had me all over the place. Once I got on the highway, it was accurate for a few minutes, then I lost the lock. It would connect for a few seconds here and there but I was pretty much without a lock the whole rest of the trip. For navigation, it was worthless, for stuff like latitude and Google. Maps, its adiquate.

I also installed the new update yesterday. I have an unrooted phone and the only mods were the XDA suggested gps fixes. After the update google maps locks slightly faster than before while stationary, but while driving it seems to be hit or miss. Out of two long drives I took yesterday it worked very poorly on one and mostly ok on the other.

D'oh! After great success in locking onto satellites last night I was excited about trying out MyTracks for my bike ride into work this morning so I pulled out my phone and fired up MyTracks. After waiting 5 minutes with no lock I gave up and headed off to work. It was cloudy so I attributed it to that.

Today at lunch I pulled out my phone again and fired up GPS Test. It saw six satellites but refused to lock onto any of them (and there wasn't a cloud in the sky) so the nay sayers may be correct in that is degrades over time - who knows at this point. Maybe I need to flush out its data?

So to recap:

Last night it locked onto 9 or 10 satellites in about 10 seconds.
Today it sees satellites but refuses to lock onto any of them.

In both cases I was just standing outside.

?? very odd.

Mine sees a few sats after a few minutes but no lock after 10 mins. Worked better before the update, which was crappy then. Not happy.

Last night it was locking onto 9 or 10 satellites in ten seconds or so... Today it's seeing some satellites but no lock no matter how long it waits.

This still feels like a software issue to me. I guess it's back to the drawing board for Samsung. Hopefully they'll figure out how to make the GPS work properly.

mine worked ok (not great, dropped connection several times, but manageable) before the update, after the update, I drove for 2 miles this morning and lost connection 4 times (then thinks i was 1/4 miles away). 2 hours later, took the same route, then worked fine......how hard is it to have a working GPS? My Garmin has never lost any signal!

Updated last night with a brand new captivate I exchanged my last one for due to some browser problems so the phone was completely stock in every way... Update DID NOT fix the gps issue whatsoever.

At first it seemed to have worked when I was outside in the city it locked on to me within 5 meters then once I got back home had me blocks away from where I was just like my last one without the update regardless if tried it in my sun room or stood in the middle of the street.

Disappointed with samsung and att's lack of support and the lies they're telling their loyal customers who have been waiting months for this fix. I'm two weeks from breaking and getting an iphone if they don't address the issue... AGAIN.

I'd like to jump in and ask a potentially dumb question for most on the forum - when using the GPS Test program, what is the "lock" everyone refers to?

I get 8 satellites, 5-6 "used". My numbers on the satellites range from 15-39, light green in color. I have gotten a momentary 40 on one satellite and the bar turns dark green (momentarily). Never more than one dark bar.

I'm assuming that to get a "lock" requires 3 or more satellites to be dark green - is this correct?

BTW - I see no change in performance after the update to my totally stock Captivate. :(

Same ... *appeared to be better at first*, but with use and after trying to use it while in motion, it got worse ... just like it used to do before the upgrade ...

My GPS works great now. I took the Captivate back to AT&T and bought an iPhone 4. It really bugs me, because I didn't want to go that route, but Samsung needs to deliver a product that actually works.

Just to update, I tried Google Nav today and it worked fine at city speeds. Haven't tested at highway speeds yet. It does seem to take a bit longer to lock in a moving vehicle (about 30-45 seconds) vs sitting at a standstill (about 10-15 seconds). Totally clear day today as well.

I'd have to say that I'm quite pleased with the performance so far.

My GPS works much better then before! Locks in under 10 seconds and doesnt seem to jump around like it did before on Google Nav!
