Help GPS auto turns off on 2.2?

Ive noticed that when im not using the gps, (ie: no apps requesting it) the icon goes away.
Does it turn off the GPS or put it into a power save mode? I thought in 2.1 as long as the gps was enabled, the icon was on.
anyone notice this?

+1! I'm pretty sure my phone did that even before the FroYo goodness!

so theres no real need for the GPS toggle then, that makes me happier. =D
Course i JUST told my girl friend she needed to add one to save battery. Course, she only uses it basically on the weekend, so during the week it might save her some battery.
