So I've hopefully getting the GSII but I just wanted to know what my chances are of getting a dodgey GPS. I mean I don't mind if it takes a little long, but I use GPS sometimes and I would at least like it to be functional.
SO please answer the poll. :)

Hi

I used the defauly satnav GPS for a trip from Kent to Norwich, about 3 hours in total and didnt experience a single issue. Signal was great and even when I twice went the wrong way it re-directed me straight away so no a single gripe about the GPS.
hope this helps :)

Thanks for the aanswers. Keep 'em coming. Just want an overall view because I'm not going to be drivikg for at least a year and a half but i do use the gps ooccasionally and ititd really bug me if it didnt work. :p

sam! that guy's awesome. I feel like i know the GSII already :p

Yes, he is a great reviewer. He dont just go for the 'headlines' like others he goes through it all as a user. Very informative!

From his and other reviews this phone looks phenomenal is every way!

Mine nails it easily under 3 seconds indoors and on a full grey cloud day.
I might go somewhere (other than my house lol) and undercover and record a vid.

My GPS seems just fine, navigation is perfect, not lost position like the SGSI. I have about 7 My tracks recordings so far which I will have available for my review, along with a video out in the car. The tracks are excellent.

This is good to hear. I know I've been hearing here n there about GPS issues. Glad to know it isnt a big problem like with the GS1 so far.

No problems here with GPS, i had a htc desire before and it wouldn't lock for ages outside my house, But this GS2 is locked within seconds and is so accurate on navigation. So for me who uses the Nav a lot for work its spot on...

what i like is that thanks to the dual core chip when it needs to recalculate the route it does so in under a second, i've had proper sat nav units which take much longer!

do people get instant connection when they turn gps on? mine takes up to 30 secs to get some satellites, then after about a min it has up to 8, is this ok? im just getting paranoid ive got a defective handset!

it depends on your location, the more obstructions such as power wires, roofs, tall buildings, trees, basically anything containing metal or water thats between you and the sky will delay / prevent a gps lock. Also if you are already moving it can take longer.

cheers, i think im just getting paranoid, im inside now getting between 4-7 satellites, very clear sky, no tall buildings around

Just tested......using GPS Status

With data connections disabled (via APNDroid) then...
After a few seconds it showed 4 - 9 satellites but even after a minute there was never a fix.

Turned off GPS, turned on data connections again, then...
After 5 - 6 seconds I had 6 fixed satellites

thats cos it uses the cell towers to figure out where you are roughly then uses the gps to figure it out down to the inch :D

so does this mean his gps isnt working as it should?

No its why newer sat navs get a lock so much quicker than old sat navs, they only used the sat part, newer ones use mobile antennas & even wifi access points to pinpoint you. (when the google streetview cars went out they had wifi on them so they could track where wifi spots are so they can be used to pinpoint your location for phones without wifi, or if you have the gps turned off to save battery. As a result my phone was convinced i was 3 miles away for a few weeks when i moved into my girlfriends and brought my router with me!)
