Root [GSM] My Evo 3D is rooted, but does not seem to act like one ...

Hello.

Please help.
It was rooted (and I believe it still is), but when I try to update / upgrade some apps (Superuser for instance), I get a message, it is not rooted.
Is this problem common, and how do I fix it?

Regards.

What do you mean by rooted? What exactly have you done to it? My best guess from the limited info you provided is that you haven't flashed a rom yet or haven't flashed superuser on your phone.

We can get you further help but need to know how you rooted so we know where you are. Also what hboot you have would be useful information.

First question that comes to mind, did you take an ota? As a lot does not knowing ota breaks root. If you was previously rooted but if su or any other root required apps saying there is no root access.

I've never heard of this problem, if no one else more knowledgeable has an answer to this problem, a re root is in order.

Hello and thank you for helping.
I bought it used and rooted.
Then, tried many times to update to the latest version of Android without success (you know, it has to be S-ON fist and so on).
So, I have here:

Hi dragonslayer95.

ota is not checked in my Superuser app.
That's right, I was previously rooted, and the apps are saying I am not rooted.

Thanks a lot.

Sort of having a similar problem, and Brian was helping me out. I still can't figure it out, but one thing is for certain...you're s-off, so technically you have full writing capabilities on the phone. Which superuser app are you using? Just curious.

Ok so you have a gsm phone. What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to be rooted or go back to stock? When you say you tried to update to the latest version does that mean you took the over the air update from your carrier? If so this is a no no. You are s-off so this shouldn't be too hard although I'm not as familiar with gsm phones or finding all the files. Is your phone running GingerBread and you tried updating to ics?

I'm going to track down a couple files. Where are you from and who is your carrier?

Okay. Try SuperSU and see if you get anything different. The Play Store has the basic version of SuperSU for free, but you can upgrade to the paid version if you want. You'll need the free version first, as the upgrade alone won't show up in your apps even though the store will show it as installed.

Also, I just noticed the PS has a Superuser Update Fixer. Perhaps, if this is missing, the Elite version won't work properly. Also, just for kicks and grins, make sure you have the free version of the Superuser app installed alongside the Update Fixer and Elite versions.

Hi Brian.

I tried the following tutorial unsuccessfully:
http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...shing-evo-3d-roms-kernels-using-fastboot.html
My Android version is: 2.3.4

Hi TurboS81.

The update fixer is not needed for my GSM.
I'll try the rest.

Thanks a lot.

Well, after having installed SuperSU, I get the following error message: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU can not install it, This is a problem!

I had that experience once. I think that was superuser issue, failed to update binary. Try to install SuperSU instead of Superuser.

Marginal,
It's very difficult to help you with so little information. I have asked several specific questions several of which are unanswered and you are tending to provide as little information as possible in each post. Help us help you! We need information to be able to help you properly.

Based on what I do have. I will suggest starting from scratch.

Download this RUU. Pull your battery and re-insert. Boot into hboot (volume down+power) Run the Ruu on your computer and follow instructions. Leave phone in hboot and plug into computer when prompted. Go through the prompts and wait for phone to boot up.

Got to play store and download 4ext recovery. Choose online | install and pick a recovery version for it it flash to your phone.

Once finished place superSU on your sd card and install through your recovery. You should then be good to go.

Running the RUU could be an unnecessary step but it's really hard to tell when I don't know exactly where you are with the rooting process.

You can try using 4ext recovery first and flashing superSU with that if you want before running the RUU. The RUU will wipe your phone... I don't know what recovery you are using but 4ext tends to fix a lot of flashing problems.

I don't think you needed to follow the newbies guide to rooting because your phone is already s-off. You do not need to unlock your bootloader and all of that.

Also please note that the RUU I linked you to is my best guess from the info you provided. Make sure that it is correct. (Verify country and carrier in the name)

Hi Brian.

I thought I've answered all of your questions, but this does not matter anymore.
The EVO 3D is bricked following the attempt to flash by the instructions from your post #14 in this thread ...

Regards.

I'm not sure why you started a whole new thread. I will just continue to post in this one.

I really doubt your phone is permanently bricked. I gave instructions in this post to deal with your temp brick.

Did you try going into your bootloader? Do a battery pull and replace. then hold volume down+power to get to your hboot screen. I know you know how to get there because you posted the info from your hboot screen. But can you get back to your hboot? if so select recovery and restore your nandroid backup...

Hi Brian.

I am sorry to say it, but it seems my EVO 3D is really bricked.
I can not go nowhere, even after having pulled out the battery and having left the phone without it for hours.
Also, I started the new thread only to double check, that the problem does not originate from the flashing with the SuperSU from the TF card.

Thanks again.

It's very odd. I have never heard of superSU bricking a phone... It doesn't flash radios or anything. Did your phone have a low battery while flashing? Your phone didn't die in the middle maybe did it? What happens if you plug it into the computer? Does your computer recognize it? I had something similar once where a phone seemed to stop responding. I plugged it in and opened command prompt and was able to boot into fastboot using instructions from the complete newbies guide...

Surely if nothing I mention works, someone will have an idea to get you back up and running. I don't think it's usually that easy to permanently brick a phone. If you can try a different battery or take it to the sprint store and have them test a different battery in your phone.

I'm sorry you are stuck without your phone! I want you to get it up and running asap. I just don't understand how flashing superSU could cause a brick!!

Hi Brian.

The battery was (and still is) OK.
I tried another battery as well, same result.
The phone died right after I inserted the TF card with the .zip file, and tried to power it up.
Also, I suppose the flash attempt alone did not brick (if it ever really did) the phone.
I had strange things going on beforehand, like an hourglass on my screen when going back from sleep to normal mode.
Also, none of the apps I tried to install (and sometimes succeeded) went through my Superuser Elite app.
Good news is though, when I plug it to my PC (as you suggested) it is recognized but only by a sound saying something has been connected.
I'll try to find a tutorial about fixing it from there ...

Thanks.

Marginal, do you have access to a micro-sd card reader? Brian and I were back and forth last night over my attempt to learn how to install older versions of hboots. At one point last night, I flashed a file that was supposed to have put my hboot at 1.4 instead of 1.58. Either I downloaded a corrupt file, or maybe my error, but I bricked my phone. At least I thought I did. I landed up pulling my sdcard out and plugging it into my laptop with my micro sdcard reader. I was able to remove the file that was causing my phone to stay stuck on bootloop, and at one point even had the ugle red triangle. I went back and placed TWRP Recovery and new ROM .zip files back on the card, launched the phone into bootloader, and went into recovery. Once in recovery, I did a complete data wipe and flashed the new ROM. Rebooted and I was back in business.

SuperSU couldn't have bricked your phone. If you were to pull the battery and try to boot up the phone. What happens exactly? Are you getting stuck in bootloop? Does nothing showup? You said you were able to boot into bootloader, so I believe there is hope. Frustration is the worst enemy to confidence. Take a breath, and lets try to figure this out. I'm sure there's a resolution. It can be hard to solve other problems, when your not physically there trying to troubleshoot.
