[GUIDE][BASIC][WIP] Rooting and ROMs for Newbies!

I would like to publicly thank TheBritton for all of his help getting me from FL14 to CM10 not that it should have been that difficult I just made some silly mistakes and have a suggestion for another link in the library for this page for gapps download I'm sure TheBritton knows of a good one to link there :beerglass::)

No problem!! Glad to help! We finally did it, huh? How ya liking CM10?
And yes.. great suggestions! The GAPPS!! I'll add that tomorrow thanks! :D

does anyone know where I can get the Samsung AllShare app that came on the stock ROM now that I have CM10? Or if it is even possible I really liked that feature but it's not a complete loss if not as Keis Air is an alternative to it at least for the purposes I need it for. Besides that I am loving CM10 and recommend it to anyone who is debating which ROM to use

I think I still have a backup. I'll see if I can upload it for you. Hold on...

I can send you my backup file for it which you can import and install using Titanium Backup.. if you have Titanium Backup
If you don't have it, I highly recommend it. Great app. PM me your email address, I'll send it the backup file.

anyone know how to move apps/data from internal storage to external SD card on CM10.1? is there an app or some setting I am overlooking?

I got the apps moved to SD using Titanium Backup now I want to know how to move the media files to the SD card?

Hey guys,

So I am coming from HTC so I am use to the long way of doing things, so Odin seems awesome. I installed Odin and flashed agats fl26 kernal on my rooted (using framaroot) stock galaxy s2. I am interested in flashing CM10.1 and in agats recovery. My question is, if I do this and need to revert back to stock, is it easy? Do I have to use odin, I got confused on how to revert back. I appreciate the help, this is why I love android, all the support

If you ever need to go back to stock after installing CM10, just download the FJ12 OneClick rom and it will take you back to stock :)

The Britton I don't know if you read my Private Message but the Allshare file you sent me didn't work out for me but I did come across something that did so I wanted to post this here in case others had the same problem:

First you must using your browser on your phone download the Aptoide app then in that app search for Allshare Player and download it

this is the link I used : AllShare Player | Android Apps (Free APK)

and I got this information from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803436

Has anyone tried using pimp my ROM on these phones? I have it but being completely new to all this, I don't know what adjustments to make. I'm not sure what vm heap is, I/O schedules, governors, and entropy. Any suggestions or help is appreciated. I don't use my wifi setting since I'm in middle of no where and there isn't a whole lot of options for that :(. My phone is always turning wifi on by itself no matter what I do which drains my battery even quicker than usual since its scanning constantly. Also my connection is very intermittent when I'm home, very weak, any options to boost that? And lastly I would LOVE to be able to move apps to sd, which I can do without a recovery installed but with a recovery on phone they cannot move :( I have a couple games that are rather large and if just feel better if I can move select ones to the sd.
Thank you TheBritton for organizing all this confusing information into one place AND breaking it down for all of us! I think I'm going to try Cm10soon but I'm trying to get all the info together first! I don't want to mess my phone up to a point I can't fix it..

I would leave the governor and IO alone on default. Ondemand is usually the default governor works good enough and unless you are concerned with benchmarks, messing with it won't affect much. I would read up on forums about the topic. I prefer the SIO scheduler. Some prefer noop. Its preference really.
As for wifi turning on by itself, try something for me.. go to settings and connections, and I think its under advanced or something? Man i can't exactly remember but its called "Connection Optimizer". Turn that off! It is supposed to "help" but what a battery killer! That could be turning your wifi on all the time.
And yeah app to sd seems to be an issue with this phone with most recoveries apparently. Sorry about that. Maybe someone has some insight on it or has any tips or advice?

Ordered the Galaxy Victory 4G LTE this afternoon so not sure how well this will be updated once I make the switch but I'll do my best! Post here if I miss something :)

Please let us (me) know what you think of that phone I've been considering it myself but would like to know if it is worth the switch so soon.

Will do. Should be here Thursday. LTE is moving rapidly down here in Texas (it's literally moving up the highway this way from Dallas at a very fast pace) so I figured I would make the jump on the first VM LTE phone.
Though of course you know a newer and "better" one will be released soon haha. That's how VM works :)

I'm gonna hold on to my S2 for a while though.. ya know.. just in case ;)

The phone is awesome! Screen is smaller, camera is 5mp instead of 8mp, but it feels a bit snappier even though it has the exact same processor. I notice that the screen on the Victory turns on instantly with no lag like the S2. So I assume that bug where the screen occasionally doesn't return from sleep doesn't exist. One last thing I noticed and it may sound strange.. the touchscreen feels smoother.. like my fingers just glide over it and its very responsive. May just be my imagination.
But yeah if you guys have any other questions about the Victory, let's post in the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE thread so we won't clutter this one :D

So when I turn off the connections optimizer my phone stops working and I get the sorry connection optimizer has stopped working, which is kind of the point caused don't need the stupid thing on all the time. But oh well guess I just deal with it. I seen there's midnight ROM and cm10 and jelly bean for the phones and I don't know which one to try. I want to try them all lol. I'd just hate to have to reinstall alp my apps again, hmmm what to do what to do!

Titanium Backup backs up your apps and their data very nicely! Just be sure its backup directory is on the external sd and not internal or you'll lose it :)

I posted a guide similar to this one over at the Victory all things root forums. Its a work in progress. Hope that helps. More will be added to it tonight.
