[GUIDE][BASIC][WIP] Rooting and ROMs for Newbies!

For some reason Odin3 v3.04 wont successfully flash agats repack to my phone. I'm running rooted stock fj12, and when I enter odin mode and try to flash agat's repack fj12 recovery/kernel.tar to my phone through Odin it keeps failing. any idea why?

Yeah one of the links had that problem. Can't remember which one. That may be it. You might could try the Kuban repack kernel. It works good. Don't have the link, I'm on my phone. I'll see if I can get that posted here soon.

hmmm k i'll try the Kuban, can I use Odin to flash it as well?

The official Jellybean update (GB28) is here. This guide does not cover how to root this build yet. If any of you guys knows or hears of a rooted one-click for this build or a repack recovery, let me know and I will post ASAP :D

EDIT/UPDATE: The Agats repack kernel for Sprint's JB build GB27 may be used to flash SuperSU. Alternatively and obviously more user-friendly, the rooted OneClicks are now available and linked in the OP.
 
Added links to Samsung's easy GB28 firmware upgrade tool for the device under Library in second post :)

For some reason Samsung seems to have two different GB28 Jellybean download links for the white phone and the grey (titanium) phone. Not sure what the difference is (if any), but they are both linked.

Rooting only allows you "access" to do anything "new". Such as removing "bloatware" such as preinstalled system apps you don't want or installing those root only apps in Market. Rooting alone doesn't do anything to your phone except allow access to the system partition. Be careful with what you remove from system. If you aren't sure what it is, leave it alone. If you do ever screw anything up you can always reinstall the stock rom as listed in this guide. If you are unsure about any root functions such as removing a system app let us know and someone will be able to tell you whether its safe to remove or not.
Again, be very careful with what you alter or remove in the system directory :D
 
I have successfully switched from CM10.1 to GB28. As much as I originally liked the CM build I was starting to have problems like a very fast drain on my battery (2 to 3 hours tops) I am loving the new GB28 and expect it to be much more stable
 
Just used the links and rooted, seemed more fun to flash roms on the old triumph, lol. Got the app for Wi-Fi tethering, everything works great.

Sorry to be a bother, i originally had a triumph so it was so easy to put a new rom on, but i am having trouble followings all of these instructions for some reason.

so first i need to install the repack kernels, then when installing CM10 i need to install all the resources as well? or just google apps and super user? is the CM10 rom not already rooted? im just and ocd kind of guy so im like looking to have a strait up list of everything that needs to happen you know, if you could help me out with this it would be awesome!!! but no rush

Do i need to bother flashing my modem if i am already using FL26? or is that if i had someething higher? and how come flashing a new kernel and flashing a modem are exactly the same steps using the same link? or are they different and im making things up?
 
ok last question because i figured out some of what i was asking before, how do i install CM10? i am used to clockworkmod, do i use odin? how do i use agats recover?
 
HELP my phone failed flashing the modem though odin! how do i recover from that? it says go into recovery mode
