Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

New to the forum! I followed all of the steps and after loading CTMod 3.68 and settings check "disable internal data" when using /data mode I rebooted and it just sits with the KOUMA KERNEL 2.5 logo!

Did you ever create an sd-ext partition in CWM ( then format it ) ????

If so, maybe try a different SD-Card ! ( I have several SD-Cards, all work just fine in any device I put them, however, ONE 16GB/class6 card does NOT work correctly on two Prevails )

everything works great until i reboot after choosing to use the partition i made for internal memory. when i reboot i get stuck on koumakernel 2.5 logo. if i try to do a restore from backup i get stuck on samsung galaxy prevail logo. only way to get back up and running is to start over with odin. i would really like to use the sd partition for internal memory. any suggestions? thanks.

Hi,

did you read my post a little up the page ? Now you can try that and see if it helps. But sometimes, it's the SD-Card itself causing trouble ( may try a different one !! )

here is a "copy/paste" from my post above :

As I said, I had the same trouble before as you do... Not sure what the cause is, but it could be the SD-Card itself.... ( do you have a spare other one to try ? In my case, it was just this particular SD Card, all other, all sizes would work...)

Whenever I was stuck at the Kouma logo, I just re-installed CTMod again, booted the phone all the way up, rebooted into CWM recovery, installed the Koumamod1.7.apk via the APKInstaller, booted, back into CWM and formatted sd-ext, rebooted all the way up, went to the koumasettings, selected data, booted into CWM recovery and formatted the sd-ext, then a final reboot and it worked....... Have done this same procedure on 5 different SD-Cards and all work, except ONE, I never could get it to work.

My advise to try : Don't Odin the base band, that's fine, just reinstall CTMod368 from within CWM and follow the steps above ! My point is, have the sd-ext formatted, then change koumasettings to DATA, boot into CWM and format sd-ext again. See if that works.

Good luck, let us know if it helped !

I followed this guide a month and a half ago... loved the results, EXCEPT, I found I was no longer receiving MMS messages from outside of Boost Mobile. In the last month-and-a-half I've tried every potential fix I could find, got all kinds of advice and "try this", none of which worked, unfortunately. Got Boost involved, had tickets opened with their networking engineers, (had reset my phone back to original in all of this too). Well, finally, I was defeated. My buddy got a new phone, so I took his Prevail and activated it on my Boost account, and it worked! I could receive MMS from outside of Boost! So, out of curiosity, I turned around and re-activated my old phone back on my account, and... MMS works from outside of Boost!!!

So now, I'm going to try this all over again this weekend and see if I can't get the CTmod going so that I can use the SD card as internal storage, and maintain my working MMS!!! Wish me luck! :smokingsomb:

Hello, I also used the guide successfully to root my samsung prevail. Great work by you guys, have couple of question though. One is the network is showing as Unknown where it used to show Boostmobile in the past, I think that is causing some issue with other apps i used and making it think like I am roaming.

Second I am also having some more dropped call issues after the update. Last I am wondering if there is anyway to install some of the boostmobile app back.

Thanks for your help in advance.

1. There is no roaming in boost mobile's network. So no, you're not roaming.

2. Signal strength will not change using this ROM. If you are judging by the 'bars' then you are not using an accurate point of reference. if you check menu> settings> about phone> status and look at signal strength you will know the real story. This rom isn't based on the boost stock rom which is why it's showing as 'unknown' and the signal strength is interpreted differently. The bars are just a representation of the signal strength. In terms of signal strength, -65 = perfect signal. -120 = no service.
If you are experiencing dropped calls, it's probably related to tower issues, not the rom.

3. If you read the first post in the ctmod thread there are instructions for reinstalling any removed apps.

Thanks for quick response. The issue I am having is that I use an app Mobile Voip to make international calls. it has option to use local access number, before the rooting it has always worked but now after rooting the issue I run into is everytime I try to use that app Mobile Voip to make calls, it gives me message that 'You cannot call with local access because you are roaming'.

So somehow this app is confused after the root and is not allowing to use the local access.

Hello, I am a newbe and a dummy. I just rooted my phone all is ok till i got stuck on the Kouma logo. This may be a stupid queston, could you please explain how I would go about installing the Kooumamod1.7.apk via the APKinstaller. I have that file on my pc but it is not on my phone. Do i put it in there in USB mode? I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks

You open the apkinstaller.zip with 7zip, and place koumamod.apk in the /system/app folder. Then you flash (install) it the same way you did the rom, using cwm.

But the older koumamod shouldn't make it stick at that logo. You can boot into cwm and former your sdext. (mounts> format sdext) NOT FORMAT SDCARD ;) then reboot. And give it at least 10 min to boot all the way up.

You did create an sdext (partition) on your sdcard didn't you? :D

Ps-installing the new koumamod won't hurt anything.

i followed all the steps and it seems they worked. however i can't seem to delete the unwanted apps like telenav. any ideas?

you need to use a root explorer or titanium backup. the explorer, you go into the folders and delete them or titanium might be the easier route if not familiar with all the folders and stuff. just be careful to not delete anything of importance. make a cwm backup first incase so you can restore back if need be.

thanks for the info! i have a lot more reading to do about this. and i need to figure out how to give the many thanks owed to this thread. took me most of the day to understand and implement the crystal clear instructions. i'm bushed mentally. my phone works, so i guess i did good. be back at it tomorrow.

i've installed ctmod 3.68 and it works fine - calls, chrome and gps. however when i try to change the koumakernal settings to data (and i checked the disable internal data box) then save and reboot the phone hangs on the koumakernal screen seemingly forever. after 30 mins i removed the battery, replaced it and booted to cwm and flashed ctmod again. all good. then tried to change the setting again and it is hung up again at the kk screen. i did partition the sd card as in the step by step rooting for dummies thread. what am i doing wrong?

edit: i do know how to use search, and have. but found no info on this problem, so i continue to read, read, read

Cheech, it may seem like a dumb solution, but...

:D:D:D:D

well i've read, read, and read some more. i repartitioned my sd card. copied the ctmod zip file back to the card and tried the data setting again. still hangs on reboot. bummer! i'm gonna stop trying to do this and just enjoy my rooted prevail until i can acquire another sd card.

other than replacing the card, anyone have any idea what's going on?
