Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

I would like to root my prevail but ive been reading and reading seems as if alot of these posts are outdated .Ive never done this before but so far i think i got that i need to use odin and FA19 with cwm first ? and if thats the latest version im not sure, i can use cm9 rom which already comes with a custom kernal?...thanks for all the time you guys put into this..

one small problem i just noticed that no materr which cord or card or usb port i use i cant get my phone to give me the little usb notification in the corner so i cant get the drop down to switch to my sd .. my computers both in device manager say problem code 19 on the samsung usb device..
So i cant even start till i figure that out
and thanks again

Hi,

For your USB-Problem : Check SETTINGS>>>>Applications>>>Development and put a checkmark into "USB debugging"

You should not use FA19.....( to buggy ), but rather FF19 ( but only with a custom ROM and not with STOCK ! ). Yes, you can use a custom ROM like cm7 or CTMod3.68 with FF19, however, I am more comfortable recommending to use FE16..,.,.. Samsung did some goofy changes to the FF19.... ( I switched to the FF19 phone ( radio ) and my service got bad ! )

ive done the switch to debugging thing and reloaded the drivers over and over and i still cant get the usb icon the computer makes a noise when i plug it in and pda net will still start (im not using it but just to test the connection between the phone and comp) i wonder if odin will still work ? i just dont get the auto play menu.

pt.2 ok so ive got a copy of FE16 w/ cwm so that means i dont have to load cwm seperately right ? then i guess ill try the muiu + cm7 ...then what else do ineed to add ??? still a little confused about the partioning sd and sd.ext and ap2sd ect but ill cross that bridge when i get there... idealy (at first }i would like a rom with all that built in (kernal n sd part) is that possible?? im sure later i will tinker with it plenty more. but i just want a safe root with no problems in the beggining so i can have something to revert back to when i do decide to tinker ....

Hmmmm, strange effect with the USB... Maybe look at device mgr and see if there are a lot of USB devices listed ( make sure you go to VIEW>>Show Hidden devices ). If I have a problem, I usually delete "uninstall" all USB devices, all USB ports, restart and have Windows new detect everything.

Yes, if you have the FE16 with CWM, you don't need to seperately install it ! ;)

Can't say anything about the MIUI ROM.... but cm7 and CTMod3.68 have everything you need included. Also, not totally sure how you do it in cm7 ( maybe our cm7 specialist LV can make a comment to that ), but after you odin the FE16, you usually partition your SD-Card in CWM ( depends what size you have ) and then format the sd-ext in CWM, then you install the ROM via the CWM menu "Install zip from sd-card" ! If you have a 2GB card, make a 512mb partition, if you have a larger card, make the sd-ext larger. I have a 32GB card and made a 4096MB sd-ext..... But usually a 2048MB sd-ext gives you plenty of space !

With CTMod and cm7 you won't need app2sd it's already build in !!! Both are probably the mos stable ROM's !

Ok so i fixed the usb prob. I backed up every thing then reset my phone to factory settings.. I think it was this stupid winxp emulator that was screwing up everything so i erased that and thinned out some other usele3ss apps... now moving on ok i got the FE16 and the ctmod dwnlds ...do ineed to install a kernal or is one built in? thank you so much for the info and sorry to bug but i got one more question you said to part my sd in cwm , how do i do that ..dont i need to install something to part the sd with or does that come with of FE16 or CWM ? Do i have to partition my sd before installing rom or could i just do that later? because thats just for extra storage ? could use a quick tut on how to part the sd properly for some reason that part doesnt seem to make sense to me in aNY OF the posts... and clearing the cache ...or is that Dalvikcache thing nessicary.. thank you so much thank you thank you to every one that built these mods and every one who took the time to pass on your experiences thru posts..

how you do what in cm7 ?

are these the correct ones because these are the ones that i have dwnloaded ..

cm-7.1.0-HROARK-beta1a

CTMod3.68-Prevail

To partition your sd-card so you will have an sd-ext, is done in CWM ! To access CWM hold Power button and Vol up button, until you see the CWM menu ! There you can partition and format your card for sd-ext.

And YES, partition your card after you put the FE16 on, before installing the ROM !!

I am not sure about cm7 install....... never used this ROM, but you can install it the same way you do CTMod3.68.....

And the latest cm7 is the beta5, so the one you downloaded is older !!!

Just follow the "Rooting the Prevail for Dummies guide" here on the first page !!!! ;)

For sure I will follow the guide I have read entirely several times there is just been so many changes since then the tut is over a year old (thats where i get confused ) I dont want to install an outdated rom or band that now has glitches ..REally Im doing what it says at my own risk very carefully.. SORRY FOR BEING A PAIN IN THE BUTT! THE TUTORIAL starts bouncing around threads (even other forums) at the sd parrt and kernal sections(giving credit to the makers ) .. So im having a hard time figuring out thew most recent info on those things.. However I get how to do the roms odin ,and the basebands . but ill read thru em again..
So i guess for now ill go with the CTmod and you said i CAN part my sd with CWM let me give it a shot am i leaving anything out?

again thank you , and thank you to the author as well as the developers yall rockk!!!!

As long as you installed the FE16_ROOTED_CWM you have CWM and you are able to partition your sd-card. What size sd-card do you have ?

Once you installed a ROM ( no matter which one ), just boot back into CWM Recovery and make a backup. This backup will be stored on your sd-card. Then you can install another ROM and see if you like it, if not, you can do a restore from CWM !

Here is a TIP :

After installing CTMod3.68, let the phone boot up all the way..... Then go to SETTINGS>>>CTMod Settings>>>>Koumasettings and select DATA and put a checkmark in the box. Then hold your Power button down a few seconds and select "Recovery" ( this will boot into CWM recovery )....here you need to RE-FORMAT the sd-ext partition ( it always needs a re-format after making changes in the kouma settings" ! ), then reboot ( NOTE : This first reboot can take 10+ minutes, be patient ) and you should be all done !

The tut isn't old, or outdated. I actually just updated it recently, since I was granted ownership.

The sdcard can be partitioned very simply in cwm. Or using the app kouma created so you can make several partitions if you require them.

If your going to use cm7, you only need one.
If you want the extra storage, partitioning isn't optional. If you decide to do it later, you will have to install a 'sdext kernel' (cm has one in its op, or you can use katokernel-ext)

When you switch to one of these kernels, it mounts the sdext as /data meaning that any apps/user data you have will effectively be gone once you switch to the new kernel.

I'll look into simplifying the instructions for SD partitioning in the next day or two, I'm driving to Florida and got a few busy work days coming up. Any other suggestions are welcome too :-)

Edit- just looked over the partitioning part... what links to other forums are you referring to? It seems fairly straight forward to me.

ok so i did it finally after all the procrastinating... thank you guys so much for your help and i would like to retract my state ment about the sd part i get it now but this is how it started... so i was reading the guide and as i went along i started downloading every link it suggested FF19 ,clockwork, odin , kaumakernal ,other roms all seperated only to find out further down the thread they were put together in these handy little packeges..so when i got down to that part i had sort of a readers block .. maybe ... i dunno.. but followed strep by step as i was doing it worked fine thank you so much everyone:)

so what exactly does the data/ssm setting and disable internal data do?

The data setting mounts the sdext as the data partition.

The ssm setting requires 2 sdext to be made (for a total of three partitions. | Fat |ext4 | ext4 | )
And mounts the first sdext as /data/app and the second sdext as /data/dalvik

The disable internal data needs to be checked when using data mode or you will experience problems with GPS

when i formatted tyhe sd ext after clicking data it froze on the kauma kernal screen weel over 30 min

Did you check disable internal data? Are you using cwm or twrp?

What class is your sdcard?
What size is your partition?
Did you create the partition in recovery? If not, did you make sure to select ext4?

im not sure whrom at class my sd card is its an 8g before flashing the rom i formatted just like the tut said to do 1024mb .. thought every thing was fine but then spent a couople hours trying to check the data box ,formatting sdext, then reebooting, first it froze. so i reflashed rom again i didnt freeze this time but started ACTIn all kinds of messed up fc everything.. service cutting in and out tottaly weird . rebooted several times same crap . so reflashed ,did not check data ,every thing cool. but when you say i need to use data exactly what are you refering to like tethering or just mounting my sd so i looked at the size itparted my sd but its not using it for internal storage my internal says 111mb my sd says like 6.15 g so what happened? it seems i was suppopsed to tell it to use the partition as internal storage somewhere but didnt ????????? i have plenty of 2g cards AROUND if it helps

Seems like you did everything correctly !!

Just remember : Whenever you flash again and change the settings in Koumasettings to DATA and put the checkmark in, REBOOT INTO ""RECOVERY" and RE-FORMAT the SD-EXT ( not the sd-card ), then reboot.

I also have a few cards who DON'T like my Prevail and just don't work. Maybe try a different brand of a card..... Should work !

i did that but i just realized i used fa19 instead of fe16 prob where i messed up huh

can i un partition the sd

im diggin the dre beats one maybe im just a dummy but with this one i can choose from like hundreds of themes for free (never seen that b4) plus i got the eq for my music

can i un partition the sd

To unpartition the card, just go through the motions of partitioning it again, but select 0 for both options

omg for the life of me i cant get ctmod to work with the data setting runs slow as shit ..every thing force closes ...I've tried so many times reloading it . It will work fine until i go to the kama maud setting and do what you say.. I switched to cm9 badass but the camera doesnt work nor the wifi tether .but it say my apps are on the sd in the aps2sd gui .. so i dont get what im doin g wrong with ctmod I think im gonna try the dre beats or cm7 and wait till they fix the glitches in cm9 I can do without the camera but not the hotspot ...but thanks for helping me root my phone i have been swithching back and forth to different roms and i pretty much got it down thanks to you guys..

Hmmmm, maybe you are using a slow ( like a class4 ) sd-card ???? My CTMod3.68 with DATA enabled runs smooth and quick, but I do use a 32GB/class10 sd-card !!!

I've narrowed it down to the kernal ctmod works fine with a different kernal and iv etried installing the latest kaumakernal on other roms and it does the same thing fc every thing I cant figure it out.. Exactly what is it doing when i check data in the settings .... I seem to be getting slower than stock speeds on all the roms as far as tethering goes.. but that could be because i messed with the prl (which I regret) fricckin a.d.d gets me every time . Can someone direct me to the latest cm7 download & EJ06 baseband i cant find either . the cm7 one i found i posted earlier you said that was the old one.. I have four different cards and i cant figure out what class any of them are but i got 3 2g and 1 8g so im using the 8g one.. slow is one thing but seriously nothing works as soon as i reboot after checking data and formatting the sdext the phone ,text message , internet forget it nothing works .... i dont get it

btw after installing a whole bunch of apps i decided to flash the kaumakernal on a different rom because i couldnt get the hotspot to work and i thought mayb the data thing had some thing to do with it so i did then reboot>recovery>mounts storage>format sdext>reboot and it really sucked after that but its my fault i shouldve mmade a backup first..

Hmmmmmm, mixing kernels with different ROM's ???? Not a good idea in my opinion ! Usually kernels, like koumakernal are made specifically for certain ROM's.....

And usually, every sd-card has some print's on... like 2GB or 4GB or 8GB....etc........ and in addition, there is a little circle with a number in, that's the "class" number..... Higher number, better speed. Class 10 works very well with kouma and DATA..... If your card does NOT have a circle with the class number in, it's most likely a class 4 or below, which is way to slow for DATA mode and causes the FC's !!!

I've actually used a class 4 with data mode with minimal lag, but i agree... Faster cards are better

Thank you to everyone involved with this, I followed the guide step by step, PERFECT first time, I love it, wonderful job, working great after 2 months, no issues at all, I'm a real newbie with this and have a question that's probably off topic, but I was reading all the threads about putting a theme on the phone and can't find an answer, if I flash a theme will I have to reinstall any apps that I installed since I did this or point me in the right direction for an answer, thanks again for a great new phone.
