Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

Thank you to everyone involved with this, I followed the guide step by step, PERFECT first time, I love it, wonderful job, working great after 2 months, no issues at all, I'm a real newbie with this and have a question that's probably off topic, but I was reading all the threads about putting a theme on the phone and can't find an answer, if I flash a theme will I have to reinstall any apps that I installed since I did this or point me in the right direction for an answer, thanks again for a great new phone.

Nope, flashing a theme will not wipe any data

Thanks for the quick reply Lordvincent, now I just need to decide what theme to start with that goes well with 3.6.8, this is just way to much fun.

Lord Vincent-
I followed your directions to root the Prevail. I've been setting my phone up for the last day however, whenever I shut the phone down and restart, it freezes.
I have to remove the battery and then restart to get it going. What is wrong and can I fix it?

Does it boot at all? When you say you do a battery pull then restart to get it going, is it fully loading or just staying stuck?

Would be also helpful to know WHERE it is stuck.......... Like if it's stuck at the Kouma logo, he might just has to wait 10 - 15 minutes for the first boot !

Just a thought. ;)

I'm just mildly concerned that a bunch of people seem to be having this issue... Seems to have popped up after i added the step to format sdext after selecting data mode... But in the past, that solved any boot issues people had... So I'm kinda at a loss. It's just hard to believe so many people just suddenly don't have fast enough cards...

Yeah, I agree with that, but usually switching to DATA mode does REQUIRE to format sd-ext, even Kouma himself said that.

Maybe it's a certain step what is missing..... like if people switch into DATA mode, they might just try to reboot normally after switching, rather then booting into CWM Recovery and doing the sd-ext format.....

Well, Bloodawn mentioned that he might does one more update on CTMod with one new feature..... maybe he can include some sort of a script, so once people switch in Koumamod, it goes straight to CWM and formats sd-ext automatically..... That would be the best and easierst solution....

Also, I think the CTMod Dummy Guide "Installing a Rom and/or kernel with Clockworkmod
" Step 5 should have a minute number in it after saying "reboot system now" ( like "wait 10 - 15 minutes after first reboot ) !! Maybe you can add this LV ! ;)

I have to admit I am the DUMBEST WHITECRACKER HIGHLY IRRITATED PULLING MY HAIR OUT IDIOT that gets utterly frustermatated with this mumbo jumbo to root/jailbreak/etc my Boost Mobile stock crapcellphone. I've tried for over a year, cried, fisted my pc, & smoked at least a carton of cigarettes to do this!!!
Well Lordvincent90 I'm on smoke #9 after finding your guide and I just have to say FruitRollups THANK YOU! Your guide was simple (well took me some rereading a few things b/c I"m rather slow lol).
I want to give "thanks" and will do it, but is there just one place to give "thanks" so that it can be dispursed properly. Didn't know who deserved more/less.
Truly a dream come true! I gave up on this site six mos ago b/c of the other rooting that didn't work the adcs or something w/ my mean posts & all. Took me some time to research each abbrviated wording but I have to say ALL OF YOU ARE THE BEST! CAN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED REUPLOADING & GIVING "MY" PHONE THE LOOK & APPS "I" WANT AND PAID FOR!!!
Thank you so so so so so much.....I could kiss all of you! If your EVER in Kansas and need a hook on some chicken let me know! Message me your address and I'll send you some free coupons (I manage restaurants that are nationwide).
My words can't describe what all of ya'all have allowed me to do with "my" phone.....ever so gratefull!

And that a not too bad of an idea. :) when I get off work I'll see about making a downloadable version

Probably the wrong place for this question but could anyone post a link to the correct driver software for the prevail I don't have internet for my comp. So I'm using my phone for all this

I was starting to root my phone and i came across an issue. I downloaded the odin package (Odin Multi_Downloader_v4.43.exe) and it downloaded except i could find out how to unzip it or whatever it is i have to do. The bar underneath com port mapping was not yellow, just white. Please help. Im extremely aggravated with my phone always saying LOW STORAGE SPACE! <------------------ the devil!

Hi,

when you used Odin, did you connect your phone via USB and put the phone in "Download" mode ( holding Camera, Vol - and Power Button until you see a yellow "Download" on your phones screen ) ?

Hi Guys,
First off thanks to everyone involved in this thread! I have learned alot from reading most of the preceding posts.
So I rooted my prevail a few weeks ago and everything has been great until last night. Before bed i pulled my phone out of my pocket and noticed that the backlight was on, but the screen was blank(black/grey). Also the four touch-buttons were lit up. No combination of button presses could get a response from the phone. I eventually had to remove the battery to power the unit off.
Now when the device starts up it gets stuck at the "KoumaKernel 2.5" and does not make it the CTMod screen or finish booting up. I have let it sit at the KoumaKernel screen for over an hour now with no change.
Any suggestions on how I should start troubleshooting this?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

wellllllllll, first of all, I hope you have a backup....... If you do have a Clockworkmod backup, try a restore......

Next, the only advise I can give you is to re-flash CTMod ( you will loose all your apps and have to re-instaall them again). After you re-flashed CTMod, do your settings in koumamod, then reboot back into Recovery and re-format your sdext. Then reboot. This reboot could take about 10-15 minutes, so be patient.

What could have been the cause ???? I don't know, could have been a corrupt file, could be your SD-Card going bad on you. My advise, use a different, class10 sd-card since you already have to re-setup CTMod !!!

Thanks for the quick reply. I did perform a backup when instructed during the tutorial, but I can't remember if it was a "CTMod Backup" or done prior to rooting. Its only been a few weeks, so losing my apps and history data would be acceptable. Looking at the memory card, I don't remember where it came from, but it says SAMSUNG on it so I'm left to assume that it's some horrible piece of trash that came with the phone... :)
I will get a class-10 sd-card soon, until then I'm going under the assumption that my mem card is the #1 suspect. Again, Thank you for your help! This is my first root so I figure this is all good experience to have for the future.

[[UPDATE:: I found the backup and it is from ClockWorkMod so I will begin there!]]

You can just copy from within Clockworkmod all the stuff from your SD-Card to the computer...... Once you have a new card, put it in, partition it and flash CTMod..... then format your sdext again, then copy your stuff from the comp back to the new card.

The Samsung class-2 SD no longer mounts in recovery mode.
The Kingston class-2 SD (pulled from my Wii) mounts properly.
I'm confident that this confirms your conclusion. I need a new class-10 memory card!
