Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

OK. If you are posting here, maybe you should try the guide that you are posting on. Didnt look at that guide you posted but from the first thing you cut and pasted into here, it was wrong. Go to the first post here and go step by step. I knew nothing about rooting on any phone and I followed this guide and it got me through it. Just have some patience and time to follow these steps. Hope this helps out.

Well, the instructions he was following are also correct. It's just a different way of doing it. I prefer using flash_image over fastboot to install the recovery partition personally, but both methods should work.

As to the dude having the issue when you go into the command prompt, you have to go into the directory where you have the files before you can run the command. I'm assuming you already put recovery.img in your Android SDK \tools\ folder. So if your Android SDK is installed to C:\android-sdk\ then you type "cd c:\android-sdk\tools\" first, then do the fastboot command.

Alright so I rooted the phone smoothly, thought I had the recovery image created but when i rebooted my phone into recovery I get a yellow explaimation point. OK to battery pull? Did i not get the recovery image installed correctly?

just to help anyone else out that cant get tether to work, you might have to set your ad-hoc channel on your wireless adapter to match the wifi-tether program so your comp detects it. i assumed it would auto-detect and change itself but it doesnt. never saw anything about this anywhere else.

I just used automated script and it worked fine and rooted and installed 2.1 i forgot to run extra script. I just found it put phone in debugging mode and when i go to install live wallpaper update or anything it says device not found? anyone know why im sure its something simple but i cant figure this out.

Are you talking about the USB driver not working (device not found)?

I followed the directions to the letter and the install went flawlessly. I have also noticed that the battery life has slightly improved. Overall, I think 2.1 is a big improvement in system speed and reliability.

No when i go to comp properties and stuff it showes it with the exclamation but when i go to run the script put one in and hit enter it says "error device not found"....so its not copying the files to get live wallpapers to my phone i dont know why it isnt detecting my phone in cmd when im trying to run the script. im sorry i hope this is clearer.

Alright i replaced the inf file and im still having the same problem........i dont know what else to do. Maybe we were talking about different issues or i just did something wrong. But ill try and explain issue more in depth. I have ran installed install_root.bat fine (so im running with root and latest rom) without issue but when i try and run rooted_extras.bat (anything live wallpapers, nexus startup, ext.) it just says error device not found and tries to continue. but of course it cant because its not copying the files......now if this is the right issue and this inf file is supposed to help.am i just supposed to put the imf file in the usb driver folder or a subfolder in it (amd64,i368) or is that completly irrelevant.....hopefully this helps someone help me..sorry for being such a noob.;)

Try this. I had the same issues and it resolved it for me. Completely power off your computer. Power off your phone as well. Turn them both back on. Get the file from this post
http://androidforums.com/all-things...ng-after-flash-latest-rom-ota.html#post473425

Copy that into the main /usb-driver/ folder of your SDK. Now when you connect your phone back to your computer, it will try to install drivers but cannot. Go to devices and right click adb (should have a yellow ! on it) and hit update driver. Now browse to the folder where you unzipped this inf file to and that should work. Keep us posted. And being a n00b isnt bad. I am too but I am learning from errors.

If that doesnt work, try what this guy did. Not tested it myself but he said it worked for him.

Thankyou so much man first part worked great. I was freaking out for ahwile :D

Okay, so im rooting tonight no matter what, but what are the chances off bricking if I enter a file wrong.

As long as you follow this guide, you shouldnt brick your phone. I had 0 knowledge of rooting before doing it on my phone. When I saw this guide, that is why I did it. I didnt use the auto script but heard people were able to do it on with no issues. 1 issues you will come across is after you root, you will need to reinstall the usb driver inf file.

Its very simple. And once you root, you can mess with stuff after you take a NAND backup. Because lets say you do mess your phone up, you just go back to your NAND backup and you are set. That is how I have learned which apps I can remove and not get FC's all the time.

I just recommend doing a lot of reading and searching if you come across errors instead of making a new thread. Dont want to flood this place with 200 of the same threads, hehe.

Enjoy your new r00ted phone.

Grdlock, thank you so much for this tutorial. I went from 0 knowledge of the android os to having 2.1 on my Eris. :D

I have one question though. I began installing the extras included in the .bat file, and got through step one, which was just the live wallpapers, and then I decided that I didn't want to install the rest of the extras. So all I have done is completed step one.

Is there any harm in this?

Also, can I delete the zip files of the all in one package, the PB00IMG, or the zip for the live wallpapers off of my sd card now?

Thanks.

For the all in one package, do we just put that in the tools folder of SDK then we are good to go and have the updated rom, what am i missing?

I am using the all in one, and every time I try to load the recovory file, it takes me a
To a triangle with excamation. Help?

On the extras part, no, you don't have to do everything, just the stuff you want.

Umm, did you actually INSTALL the stuff though? Unfortunately there's a little more to it then just putting the files in your tools directory. Run install_root.bat and follow the steps in order.

Well, I simply wanted root so i can use openvpn. Then I wanted 2.1 for navigation. I had 1.5.

So I started. Put PB00IMG.zip in root of SDcard, followed the manual instructions to root, or so I thought. but when phone rwbooted it had firmware 2.1 and software version 2.19.605.1. Weird, I thought. But I didn't care. My question: how do iknow if i rooted my Eris and was 2.1 supposed to be loaded and if it did, how did it happen?

Maps force quits when I try to get dieections or use navigation.

Thank you lots
Frank
