Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

The PB00IMG rom contains a rooted 2.1 image. That's exactly what you're supposed to have. And if your Google maps is doing that FC, then you installed the correct image and your phone is rooted.

You now need to move on to step 2 and install the recovery partition. Then from there you can install a custom rom.

PHEW!!! thx, GrdLock. I will inform of progress. Yesterday I was having som cannot connect to daemon issues. We'll see.

well, i tried the driver from the sdk, a driver from another thread around here, but I still get daemon issues:

when I run the install_root.bat and select option 2 to install Amon;s recovery, I get this:
Installing Amon's Recovery Image.
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
** daemon still not runningerror: cannot connect to daemon

Any tips?

Thank you!

Hi all! I'm trying to do this on my HTC Dream (still running 1.5!) and I can't root my phone :( I'm stuck at this step :

4. Hold Volume Down + Power On. This should bring you to a screen saying "HBOOT" and some other stuff. Wait for it to load the image, and it will say Push Activate. Push the trackball button to continue. The process will take around 5-10 minutes. The first time your phone boots up it will take a lot longer than normal.

When I try to boot my phone this way it just boots up the normal way :( Does anyone know how to do this on the HTC Dream?

i'm still having problems with the install_root.bat and install_extras.bat for some reason when i try those commands it says acces denied. what am i doing wrong please help very annoying :(

I still get the above and also:
ADB server didn't ACK

I've tried everything. I googled and everything suggested didn't help.
- made sure using USB driver from SDK
- killed all existing adb.exe processes, disabled firewall, anti-virus, rebooted pc and phone

Any ideas, please?

C:\Users\Kern>desktop\sdk\tools\adb push recovery.img /sdcard cannot stat 'recovery.img': No such file or directory

Sounds like you have your sdcard mounted to your computer. Unmount it and try again.

What is saying access denied? The command prompt?

I doubt any of these ROMs would run on a Dream. You should check the Dream forum.

You need to install the Android SDK, there's a Mac version. Extract it to a location, run SDK Setup.exe, install the packages for 1.5 and 2.1, then you open a terminal window. It should be in Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Change to the /tools/ folder of the Android SDK, and do those commands and follow the directions normally, except putting the ./ infront of the adb commands.

I am stuck on the first part.

After moving P00IMG to root of my card( no folders), power down, volume+down + power on. It starts up, moves the a list down very fast, but I make it out to be the list says "loading...." then "no image or wrong image". And then HBOOT highlights in blue. I wait and nothing comes up after 20 minutes. I try all P00img files. I even try the SDK way and still get the same problems. I also tried renaming P00IMG to POOIMG.zip and still get the same problems. Anyone know a solution?

Wow big mistake. I just searched the forum for "upgrade 1.5" or something and found this thread without seeing it was under the Eris section :( Sorry wrong forum

It should be named PB00IMG.zip

Note those are zero's, not the letter O.

sorry mac and linux do not use an exe.
from the android sdk site:
Android SDK | Android Developers
On Mac OS X or Linux, execute the android tool in the <sdk>/tools/ folder. For detailed instructions, see Adding SDK Components.

after this from the command prompt in the tools directory type
Code:
./adb shell

the .bat file is the dos equivalent of a bash script. these will not work from your mac or any other *nix equivalent.

I know they don't use an exe, I use linux. :p Yeah, typo when I said to run SDK Setup.exe, but considering the file is named SDK Setup still, I think he outta be able to figure that out. ;)

I gave up trying on windows.

On my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop I downloaded the Android SDK and Java. GrdLock's instructions worked flawlessly. No driver problems, no problems at all. Obviously, it's all manual, no windows .bat file.

As suggested previously, if on Linux use
./adb

Pandora crashed the first time I used it, but other than that, I like the new ROM.

No custom ring for contacts, as far as I can see...

Thx, GrdLock and all!

I already try that, still a no go

Also download an md5 sum checker. Just google it. Check the MD5sum of the file you have against the records on my website to make sure it downloaded correctly.

I just wanted to say thanks to GrdLock for his wonderful app. I didn't install his rooted image in the last step of the installer, instead i just loaded the rom i was looking to have on my phone and went straight to it instead. Still worked great though. Its nice having the recovery partition/app on the phone it really opens up a world of possibilities :) Thanks again for your hard work, i'm sure i'll be trying your rom here shortly as of right now i'm getting back up to speed using sense-able.
