Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

Okay this may be a dumb question but how do you run the script. I assume once the files are in the tools directory of Android SDK I just plug in my phone, do not mount. and double click the install.bat file. Is this correct or could someone walk me through the process on XP. I am just unsure about when to plug in my phone and how to run the script of XP.

you run them from the command prompt from the /tools directory of the android sdk folder. so you type "cd" and then however you get to the /tools directory and then type in the commands

First of all, i am running on stock 1.5.

I am finally taking the lunge and rooting my eris.

I was going to follow the instructions of the first post here. The all-in-one package seems simple enough.
But is that the latest and best version?

I know a new version came out a few days ago. I did not see it in this site, but found it here:Rooted Leak3 (which is the 4th leak? lol) Rom Base DOWNLOAD - xda-developers

Is that newer and better? Or am i just lost? lol

If that is a newer version, how do i incorporate it into the instructions I am following?

I would just like to get it all done at once and not have to keep re-installing my apps and setting up my phone from "defaults" to the way I like it.

please help

if you follow the step by step instructions after the step of putting the recovery on the phone you can choose whatever rom you want and just put the .zip of it on the sd card instead of the one suggested there and flash it over using the same process described in the guide

Sorry but here comes a noob question...

Attempting prerequisites and get to step ten but when I type adb shell I get a device not found error. I tried the all in one and got the same error in the command prompt.
Any ideas? would really like to get this done, I've been Lurking for about a week and when I finally decide to do it I get an error of course.

Thanks for this forum and in advance for your your help with this issue.

hmmm some quick things to check are that make sure usb debugging is on, also charge only.
Did you download everything you needed to from the sdk?

So I just began the process and I got to the step where I updated my driver, when browse to the usb_driver folder there are two options there to update, I tried them both and both times it said it was unable to update my driver with both options, any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, I am stuck on this step as well. There are two options in the 'usb_driver' folder. Which one do I choose? Any help would be MUCHO appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, I set the phone to debug. I unmounted the SD Card. (should I have waited to do that?) Where do I set to charge only. Not seeing it in the phone menu or the port menu. Where is that setting?

I downloaded all the nec files. I updated the usb driver etc.. I got all the way down to # 10 and nothing.

good.
Well when you unmount it from your computer I'm pretty sure it'll put it into charge only so you should be okay.
Try unplugging your phone and plugging it in again

Ok. I just got done doing the entering the proper text into the command prompt for the recovery and did not receive any errors. How do I know if I did this properly? Start the phone with the "Power + Volume Up?" Then what? Appreciate the help.

Ya so power down then power on by using "power+ vol up"
You should then see the recovery image thing.you should see the reboot, restore/back up, etc.. Options.
You might want to do a nandroid back since your there

Got it, thanks. I am now on 2.1 root!! What is this NANDROID backup? I've seen quite a few people mention it. When can it be done? I assume it is done at the recovery screen somehow?

You boot the phone in recovery mode (vol up + power on) and say backup. You can do it whenever and it is always wise to do before flashing a new rom to your phone

So I used the all in one script and got the step 3, where I had to do the wipe and flash rom thing, and I missed the wipe part and just went straight to the second step. I got the error a previous guy had where it would just oscillate between htc and verizon on startup, so I powered + volume down again and kind of started over, now my phone works again, it appears I have 2.1 but I don't know how to get back to the part where I can try to wipe data again to complete the whole process, could anyone help me?

Power the phone off. Press Volume Up and power on.

And that will get me back to the screen with the green letters, and I can just proceed from where I messed up with the wipe and then clear data thing, then flash? Thanks alot.

Hey, man, I love the tut ya got set up. I've never rooted but reading through what you've set up here gave me the confidence to go for it... Only problem is, I forgot that, at some point, my trackball began malfunctioning, (due to a drop, is all I can figure,) but it only recognizes movement when pushed like a button, rolled up, or rolled to the right. So now I'm stuck at the recovery image because I cant scroll to 'wipe' to begin the flash process. I made it through all other steps successfully, and now Im stuck... I realize Im stuck, and I still have the rom zip on my sd root, ( i had chose ivans rom,) my question is this... Can I install & run the root script you provide successfully w/o the track ball, using only adb & command prompts, etc... ?

Sorry so long, peeps, but Im stuck! (lol & and scared to move forward not knowing what to expect!)

I am trying to root...and do the volume down and power...it comes up with a screen with HBOOT highlighted, but it doesn't show a progress bar or anything...how do I know that in fact is loading the PB img? Thanks. :)

Just want to say that I just rooted my phone using the instructions from the first post (all-in-one) and it was VERY easy.
I was a little confused when reading it, but once i started doing it, it went through smoothly!

LOVE it. REcommened it for anyone that has been waiting for the OTA like I was. No need to IMO. This does everything you need! Google NAV is great.
The WIFI tether and new unlock screen included in download are also awesome!!!

Only thing i did different after rooting and going through all the steps I installed the newest rom... version 4 i think? Was very simple to do.

Thanks for all the great info!!!
