Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

other than /system/app how do i see exactly what is on the /system? cuz i think he may have accedently saved everything to his internal storage cuz his phone shows less room than mine and i have WAY more stuff on my phone than him so if anyone knows how to see whats on the internal storage or how to remove from or whatever please reply...THX in advance!!
 
I'm new to the whole rooting and rom thing. If I want to install a rom, for example the Vanilla one, do I just do that after I root 1.5? Or do I need to install the rooted 2.1 rom first?

2. Place PB00IMG.zip onto the root directory of your sdcard.

I'm on this part, and sad to say I'm having a slight problem. When I'm on step 4, I did volume down and power on and after it loads the image it doesn't say push activate. It asks if I want to install the update, volume up for yes and volume down for no. Is this right? I had versions 1,2, and 3 of the leak (physical phone problems today, had to get a new phone under warranty), and none of them said this - they all said to push activate. So what am I doing wrong?

Edit: I hit yes, it's updating, looks like the updates to the leaks now, guess I did it right? It's going now, I'll find out in a min I guess.

Edit 2: It worked! So never mind. :)

I retried extracting the files into the tools directory and attempted to enter the commands again and the same thing every time. I must be doing something stupid that I just dont realize. What is exactly supposed to happen when I enter these commands in the prompt?
 
anyone have any thoughts about going from this root to the official 2.1 OTA update?
 
Ok, I'm trying to root this, where is the root directory on the sdcard? I can get to it in astro on the phone itself, but not through my computer.

The "root" directory is the initial directory you see when you first open your phone's SD card. Where all the folders for the other things on your phone are located. For example, when I plug in my phone to modify items on the SD card, it appears as Drive E with Windows Explorer. By simply double clicking Drive E, I am then in the root directory.
 
I successfully rooted per the directions in this thread - thank you! I did it in order to get google voice navigation. Now that the official ROM is available OTA, I'd like to unroot and go back to stock. Can someone please provide directions? I imagine it's something in regards to the recovery partition and image saved there, but I'm not sure.

@mgrunk What are you talking about the offical OTA is out. I have not got the update yet. i live in Pa. Which state are you in.

Also can someone please provide the link or IRC link for the root chat page. I have some question i need to ask a live person. I have search by no luck in any forums.
 
ok, so i am in the process of rooting, a couple of questions>>>

1st. during the last step of installing the recovery image i got the following errors:
mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00020000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00040000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00060000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00080000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x000a0000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x000c0000 (Out of memory)

Is my recovery image loaded correctly?

edit-- I repeated the whole procedure and did not get the error the 2nd time

2nd. how do i navigate after i reboot in recovery mode, i can't seem to change the highlight to any thing other than "reboot system now" vol keys do not do anything.

thanks for any help.
 
when i did the steps in prereqs, when i opened my usb to select that driver, i have 2 folders in there. 1 says amd64 and the other says i386 i have checked both of them and it says that the device is already up to date. is that normal?

You use the track ball to move up+down. Vol down takes you to the previous screen

another successful root user here! wooooo! now it's time to find my favorite rom.

The script worked well for me. After the first option it did not automatically reboot my phone though. I had to do it manually that time. Other than that, no issues.
 
ive rooted a few eris's and have sucessfully done recovery and all but im doing the recovery part on another phone right now and when i type the first command: adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system........i get an error saying adb not found......is there any reason i may be getting this? can anyone help?
 
yea deffinetly man ive done like 5 phones now and all of a sudden when i put first command in adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

i get the error adb not found.....do you know y i may get this?
 
ok. I am just thinking simplistic right now, so, forgive the remedial questions.

is the adb daemon running?
do you have usb debugging enabled?
 
yes and yes i figured it out man im so used to going from cd:\androidsdk\tools...adb shell then su that i was typeing adb shell right as i got to tools folder rather than typeing the whole command....i feel dumb now that was a simple "already rooted" user error LMAO im so used to jumping on mine hitting adb shell then su that i totally spaced out that i just go str8 to typeing commands rather than doing it that way....thanks for trying to help me tho i really appreciate it
 
Ok I understand many are asking the same questions over and over again but I cant seem to get the answer I am looking for.

I have 2.1 from verizon (OTA). I want to root so I can use create WIFI tether with the phone.

Looking at this thread there is a pre-req and 3 steps to root the 1.5
Step 1--Rooting your phone
Step 2--Installing Amon's Recovery Image
Step 3--Install the New Root ROM

My question is if I'm happy with the OTA 2.1 do I still complete all 3 steps to root my phone to be able to run WIFI tether.
