Root [GUIDE] How to Root the OnePlus One

Nah I dont have a PC so can't unlock /root it til Thursday then I think Validus will be my 1st rom :thumbsupdroid:
+1 for CM12-based ROM w/ dark theme

BTW, to save yourself some trouble, flash CM12 first. Validus doesn't properly update the firmware for Lollipop, so things will go bork until you either flash CM12 (which updates the firmware automatically) or find and flash the firmware manually.

Also, if you want to mess around with any Kit Kat ROMs, do that before flashing anything Lollipop and updating the firmware accordingly, as it's not backwards compatible and will bork Kit Kat ROMs unless you flash back to the old firmware manually (it's not saved in a nandroid backup) :(

Yeah I've heard that mate. It's because of the new modem eh?
I have a link to the modem so I'll flash that 1st and then Validus.
What rom are you using mate?

Hey peeps. I have a question... If the cm12 ota comes before I get the chance to root this beast, should I take it? (will there be a root exploit for it straight away)
Cheers :thumbsupdroid:

As a guess, I would think it would be able to be rooted quite easily. I haven't checked recently but in the beginning you had to do a factory reset to root the phone. The longer you wait, the more you will lose during the process. My apologies if there is a new(er) method nowadays.

Yeah you're right mate, unlocking the bootloader will format all /data so I'm keeping the phone pretty bare bones until I get it rooted (it's looking like I'll get it done on Thursday)

Confed is right. Rooting CM12/s will be a piece of cake, probably just like CM11s, especially since SuperSU has been out and working on Nexus devices and early CM12 alpha build for a few months now.

So I failed :( tried using bacon root toolkit but drivers wouldn't install so installed the Samsung universal driver but when I right clicked on my device (A0001) chose update drivers, chose choose from my computer (as you can tell I know nothing about windows or pcs) but I can't for the life of me find the driver and it's definitely installed! Anyway I've gave up for tonight disappointed in myself and feeling like a total noob.
My friend brought his tablet round as we don't have one but it's like 0330 here so had to call it quits :(

Cool cool. I'm gonna root it tonight anyway :thumbsupdroid:

I am currently running fusionjack's Sabermodded SlimLP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-slimsaber-bacon-t2858033). It's great. Android version is 5.0.2 and the thread is full of directions, help, suggestions and apps. Take a look at Layers if you want to theme your phone. I will be adding the Layers this weekend most likely.

Also, I am not sure which toolkit you mean. Have you tried this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/oneplus-one-toolkit-manudroid19-gui-t2807418 ?
That is the one I used. It took just minutes and if you have any issues, just search that thread. Post here too, it should work very quickly for you. Good luck tomorrow.

Thanks mate I'll try that next time but my problem was with drivers for the phone, Windows 7 couldn't find them online so someone on g+ suggested the Samsung universal driver by (i think) Chainfire which supposedly works but, like I said, when I tried to make that the driver for my phone I couldn't find it but I could find it (installed) on a search of the laptop.
It was wuggfresh bacon root toolkit I was using (the dude famous for his nexus root toolkits). http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...olkit-wugs-bacon-root-toolkit-v1-0-0-t2947627

I just basically ****in hate windows man lol. It just feels so unintuitive to me compared to Android and touch screens

Got that thing rooted yet? Still having driver issues? How can we help :)

Hello!

I got my OnePlus One a few days ago and have decided to root it, simply because I want to be able to use the iOS emojies instead of the current ones.

I have read this AWESOME guide and I think I will use the second method, since the first one is "more complicated for inexperienced rooters". However, I'm in doubt about step 1 only. I don't know which custom ROM I should choose. I want it to be the exact same as I have right now including the Google apps (must be the GApps.zip?)...can you guys help me here?

PS. How should I complete the guide without a SD card? The OnePlus One doesn't have room for one.

Thank you!

The phone is partitioned correctly so you do not need a physical SD Card. Just move the files to the root directory of your phone and you are good to go. If you do not want to flash a custom rom, you would need to only flash SuperSU. Unlocking the bootloader and flashing SuperSU will root your phone and keep your Rom/Gapps standard. Please check through the entire thread as there are some youtube videos posted in here that could make the process easy for you as well. Good luck and let us know if you need anything else.

i've been working on this for a while now. The first time around i seemed to have achieved bootloader and was able to install TWRP but when i went to install SU, even though it "installed" w/o a hitch, when i run RootChecker, it says i do not have root. i'm running Linux (PCLinuxOS 64bit) and using the shortend version of adb (adb-linux) and fastboot. i can even boot into TWRP using the Vol. and On buttons and tried to install SU from the phone's SD card. It seems to install successfully, but when checked with RootChecker, still reports no root.

Now, when i begin to follow the instructions from the beginning in order to see if i can "begin from the beginning" i'm able to get into the phone's original Fastboot, but when i run the "oem unlock", the output only reports .002 seconds as compared to the original .006 seconds, and does not reboot. Fortunately i can still shut down the phone and this last time i just used fastboot to reboot the phone. i read, in this thread that the phone can set some sort of flag if things don't go right... Do you suppose that this is what has happened - lol?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - have a great evening! :)

Came across another tip in another forum...

./fastboot-linux oem device-info
...
(bootloader) Device tampered: true
(bootloader) Device unlocked: true
(bootloader) Charger screen enabled: false
OKAY [ 0.005s]
finished. total time: 0.005s

So this tells me that at least my problem does not lie with a still unlocked bootloader but somewhere else...

Have a great morning! :)

Assuming that you've already unlocked the bootloader, download a recovery, leave it in the zip file and flash from the stock recovery. Alternately, use TWRP Manager.
I just tried using your link to TWRP Manager but it says I don't have root. However, I went to XDA forums to grab a root checker called "Simple Root Checker" and it says I do have root, but haven't installed SU yet. I am going to attempt to install the recover again via fastboot.
