Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Hey all,

I've looked everywhere (I thought..) but I really can't find the answer.

I have a Wildfire S, my carrier is Vodafone NL.
My software number is: 2.26.401.3
My kernel version is: 2.6.35.10
My Android version is: 2.3.5

I can't find the fitting RUU from HTCDev.com. So I googled around a bit, and I found two same answers saying if your software number is 2.26.401.3, you should skip the RUU update.

I tried this, and continued the HTCDev.com steps. But the CMD gave me an error which more people had. It seems that you DO need to install the RUU from HTCDev.com to allow to open the bootloader.

I'm pretty sure it's a simple solution though, but it's my first time rooting a Android. hehe

Thanks in advance!

Adr99, welcome to Android Forums :hello:

When you boot into hboot do you see *** UNLOCKED ***? If so, then there is no need to update the bootloader, in fact it won't be possible.

If not, find the RUU for generic HTC EU P76100 and it should accept the update since the hboot for A510e is common.

Hope that helps

I think one answer might solve both problems. Look at the guide just above step 5. There is a mini-procedure for manually rooting the phone starting with Give it a whirl and post back if you have trouble, but I think it will work.

Hope that helps!

I tried that last night, and again today. it isn't working either. when I power up the phone in hboot it starts trying to load the zip file and then says

Model ID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Press <POWER> to reboot.

Heya, thanks!

Nope, it says *** LOCKED ***.
I will try the HTC EU P76100 RUU tomorrow. :)
It really wouldn't matter that I won't pick a Vodafone one? Since my carrier is Vodafone NL..

And thanks for the fast reply and help!

If it says *** LOCKED *** then you don't need to update nor can you. The purpose of the RUU is to update to an unlockable bootloader. That's a great thing since updating the bootloader is the hardest part! So you can now proceed from step 3C.

And thanks for the fast reply and help!
No worries! Don't forget to click the thanks button for the folks that help you ;)

Hey thanks again man. Now my bootloader is ***UNLOCKED*** :D (And S-ON)

But the HTC Super Tool doesn't seem to work properly.
It says "adb server outdated. killing..." all the time.

Also it says `daemon not running starting it now` followed by `daemon succesfully started` all the time.. :/

It also didn't install the SU apk, I did install it manually but it said I wasn't rooted..

Edit:
It also says things like:
"Unable to chmod: /system/bin/su" etc..

Did I miss anything? :P

Thanks again!

Just making sure here..:
1. Skip ahead to steps 5A and 5B below to install ClockworkMod Recovery and backup your ROM.

How do I do this? When I run the app, and try to backup the ROM I get a error, correct?
I should just go on from step 2 then?

I'm not sure what app you are talking about. If you mean ClockworkMod's ROM Manager, I would avoid using it unless flashing the recovery manually doesn't work. It's been know to brick a device here and there.

Ah I'm sorry. I installed the ROM Manager indeed.

I should use this one then right?

Edit:
Never mind, I totally didn't even look at 5A and 5B xD
Thanks! Backing up now!

Edit2:
I can't thank you enough man. :)
Everything went well.

Now, lets install the CM7.2 ROM, and do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490607
No more internal memory popups!

Or should I install CM9:
http://www.htcwildfiresblog.com/2012/06/android-40-ics-for-htc-wildfire-s.html

I don't want to get in trouble afterwards. :P haha

At what step does it give you that error?

It tries to load the zip file and it flashes a lot of text (Don't have the phone with me right now. it's my girlfriends phone.) but it says it can't find the image, and a couple other things and then says it didn't upload. then I get that error.

I finally figured out what I was doing wrong and got it rooted. Thanks SO much. only one issue now, instead of freezing Wifi talk or whatever. I uninstalled it. so I keep getting an error pop up saying com.android.kineto stopped suddenly. now I'm trying to figure out how to get it back on there. it's annoying.

Good work, guys! You now have a totally new device. Have fun! :D

Did you do a cwm nandroid backup in step 5? If so, just restore it and start over.

Now, lets install the CM7.2 ROM, and do this:

No more internal memory popups!

Or should I install CM9:
Android 4.0 ICS for HTC Wildfire S! (LeWa OS + CM9) - HTC Wildfire S Blog - Tutorials, Root, Tips and Tricks for your Wildfire S

I don't want to get in trouble afterwards. :P haha

If you don't want trouble, I suggest you don't go for CM9 as quite a few things still don't work. CM7.2 however is a stable rom and works perfectly:D
So I do recommend it :)

I see, thanks.
But before I install CM7.2, in this topic:
[TUTORIAL]500MB-2GB Internal Storage - xda-developers

The Data2SD .zip is corrupted, and the MediaFire link is dead. :(
Anyone care to reupload it? :P

Btw, I tried CM9 just to see what it looks like though.
And it's amazing!

I havn't seen any problems yet, besides that the camera doesn't work. :(
Well the build of 24 April had it fixed apperently. But it broke again later.

It seems like they are working on it.

Hi belt and welcome to AF.
Does your phone use a SIM or not?
If yes, you do not need to gain s-off
If not, then you will need s-off but in this case it's easier to create a goldcard than unlocking your phone as many people have had trouble with it

Hi Caro332

Hi guys, I'm having a little problem.

I have unlocked the bootloader on the phone and have (I think) rooted the phone. My problem now is that when I try to drop into cwm recovery it shows a screen with the phone and a big red triangle?

I'm really stuck on what I have done wrong, can anyone help?

i have this same problem, how did you fixed it?

Hi Belt & EGOI,

I hope the method worked for you Belt. Let me know!

Otherwise, in the guide, Cafekampuchia has mentioned that if Supertool doesn't work, there is a way of manually rooting it:
Some devices refuse to root using the Supertool. For those phones, do the following mini procedure below. This is the oldest and most manual way to root the Wildfire S. Credits to the guys at XDA.cn for developing the rooting script and user Heritz at xda-developers.com.

Quote:
1. Skip ahead to steps 5A and 5B below to install ClockworkMod Recovery and backup your ROM.
2. Download root.zip and put it on your SD card.
3. Boot into HBOOT and go into Recovery.
4. Select install zip from sd card and choose zip from sd card. Then find the root.zip file downloaded above and install it.
5. Go back to the main menu and reboot the phone.
6. Verify that the SuperUser app is installed and go to Google Play market to update it. If the SuperUser app is not installed, download SuperSU from Google Play store and reboot the phone

I'm trying this but in step 4B when I try "3. Attempt Perm Root" after "1. Prep zergRush" this is what I get:

Loading root script...
pushing BusyBox...
changing permissions...
mount: operation not permitted
Pushing su...
changing permissions...
Pushing superuser.apk
ROOTED

But after that when I enter "reboot" the phone does not reboot and the program does not exit either.

If I reboot manually and try SuperSU it says that 'su' cannot be found.

The HBOOT was unlocked using HTCDev (and it says so if I stay with VolDown+Power).

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Nick
