[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

Hi all. I am trying to root my CDMA Hero using the manual method. I did manually update my phone to 2.1 when Sprint came out with the ROM. I am at version 2.27.651.6

Am I hosed because of this? Do I need the 2.27.651.5 version to root? Is there anything I can do?

I got the same issuer as the user a few posts above where I am unable to get into the shell when I type "/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh"

I get an error of "[1] Killed /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh"

You are fine. You'll need to revert back to .5

I finally get my software to .5 but, I'm getting an error message "[1] Killed /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh". And in Fresh Kitchen v1.0.5 I get the same errors. So frustrated. Can someone help me please, thanks!!
 
Help, tried to manually root my HTC hero and i cant get past the last step listed. Im lost. I copied the img file into the tools folder and made sure the name was correct to what gives?

Yes phone is in debugging mode and sd card is unmounted/removed

Siazul, I think (purely speculation) that maybe you need to download a different version of the recovery image. Seems like you are rooted, but the rec image didn't flash. Try to get another version, and try to reflash it...

It wasn't a flashing problem. He couldn't even push the file. More than likely he had his SD Card mounted.

Make sure your SD Card is not mounted. If you are getting permission denied, it means it cannot put that file on your SD card. This is usually caused by either your SD card not being mounted, USB Debugging Not being enabled, or lack of space on your SD card. You can also do an adb remount (this will not mount your SD card, but will instead make sure your "device" is mounted.

If you try all of that and still have no luck getting the file to "push" to your phone, you can temporarily mount your SD card, then put the Recovery image on there yourself (click and drag it onto your SD card). Then unmount your SD card and you should be able to continue after where you failed (move to the next step).
 
got it working, I think I didnt have the SD card unmounted and thats why the file could not be copied to it.

I tried CM6 and it was nice but I couldn't find out how to get gapp on it so I had no market.

Tried NFX hero rom but it was ok at best, camera never worked.

Now I flashed Fresh rom and its awesome no complaints yet
 
Anyone know if all is possible via tethering or is a seperate internet connection required? I've attempted both manually and kitchen and ended up no where. Always some program problm. Manually prompts do not work and .net program won't work in the kitchen..... 3 diffrent sites diff proceedures and .....:-O===& .... always cleaning up a mess

To get gapps on CM6, simply download the file and flash it from Recovery Just like you did the ROM.

If you could be a little more specific as to what you are asking for (not sure I understand what you are asking by tethering) and if you could try and describe your problems a bit more in detail, we might be able to provide more assistance.
 
I just rooted my hero and i want to do a nandroid backup. Any1 can help me with the steps to do this? I did find some posts about it but they r to technical for me. Thnx in advance.
