Root Guide to Rooting Without a Computer

Andy is probably ninja posting right now, but....
Start with the newest. It should be fine, but if you have a problem, try the next oldest.

Edit:: I actually beat him to it! WooHoo! :D

First of all, thank you mkbkr1 for the clear instructions. I would like to add a correction.

5. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, MAKE A BACKUP. IT WILL SAVE HOURS IF NOT DAYS OF HEADACHES IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE. Using the volume up and down to navigate and the home button to select, click on backup and restore. Select backup and let it do its thing. Once the back up is complete it will take you back to the main recovery screen, then select reboot system to take you back to your android system.

It seems that the button for selecting is NOT home button anymore but the CAMERA button. I guess this must be a new change.

I could not partition the SD card...Windows/Easeus allows only one primary partition, and my phone would not recognize the sd card with a logical (ext3) partition, despite having a FAT32 primary partition. I'm confused about that, but I guess I need to partition the card on a Linux box? I don't have access to one.
No need for a Linux box, Windows won't recognize multiple primary partitions, but your phone will. Okay, you can use Minitool Partition Wizard. I know for a fact that will let you create multiple primary partitions, I've used it a few times.

The selection button for xionia is still the home button. The IHO recovery's selection button is the one that's the camera button.

Weird thing. I powered down the phone last night. When I turned it on this morning, I no longer had root access. I don't know what caused that, but I downloaded GB and ran the install again and root is back.

I just installed BusyBox and that installation appears to be fine.

Now on to step 3. How do I decide which recovery image to use - IHO or xion? Or both?

I am confused about the note that says Make sure you enter the name of the recovery exactly as it appears on you sd card in place of "recovery.img"

What goes in place of
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/"recovery.img" ?

Am I using IHO, xion, or both? Does one of those names go in place of recovery?

Read this. You're just following in the footsteps of many who've come before. The bright side is, the path is clearly marked. :)

If you look were you put the recovery, the whole file name. Example: VM670NH_recovery.img or Xionia_cwma_1.2518.4_ virgin.img
As you see there is room for error.
On my sd card I renamed the recovery's: brecovery.img(the b stands for BobZohme who developed this recovery)
and xrecovery.img(x stands for xionia)
This makes it easy for me to type in with no mistakes.

The reason I have both recovery's is xionia allows me to install all the Froyo ROM's, plus has an option in the advanced section that will fix a recovery loop.
The BobZohme recovery I have installed because it works great for the IHO ROM's, which I'm currently running.
You can only have one recovery installed at any given time.

The xionia 1.2518.4 is for the Novatek screen and the 1.2518.6 is for the Hitachi screen.
The BobZohme will work on either.

Douh! I just got ninja'ed
Not hard to do when there's 8 fingers against 1 mistake making fat one

OK I did:
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/IHOrecovery.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

I selected back up and restore from the recovery menu. I did not get a separate backup menu item. My screen has a hat with a yellow orange arrow. Nothing is moving. Is it backing up, or doing anything?

I'm back at the CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.5 menu screen. I'm not sure how to get the backup going. Home button just gives me the static hat and arrow; the camera button does nothing as far as I can tell.

OK I got it, the camera button wanted to be pressed harder, thanks for listening :-)

Sorry, couldn't help. Life happening.

Glad you noticed my post ^ on the selection button for IHO recovery.

Thank you. It has been a difficult journey at times, but thanks to the strict discipline of brotherswing and the guidance of AndyOpie150, I am better prepared for my next adventure into the world of ROM flashing. May all who come here be so blessed. :)

BTW rebooted and all is well :-)

Discipline? Wow! Do I come across as harsh, or something?
