Help handcent wont always launch as default

missblue

Newbie
Hi everyone.

I searched everywhere for this problem.

I installed Handcent, turned off all the notifications for the stock messaging app, then went into people, selected a contact to send a message, then selected handcent and checked the box to always use as default.

Now, whenever I go through people to send a message, it uses handcent. Good. But whenever I try to launch it through another widget, I get the stock messaging app. For example, both of these widgets still launch the stock: SMS Unread Count and Executive Assistant.

What's really weird is that I changed the default mail to Gmail, and those two widgets launch it just fine - so I can't figure out where the problem might be.

Thanks Guys.

Is your phone rooted? Easiest way to disable the stock SMS would be to download Titanium Backup and freeze it, so only Handcent sends and recieves texts. If need be, you can always unfreeze it if you have to.

^ its been a while but from what I recall from when I was toying with the stock messaging app..you can't freeze or remove it. Handcent is not a messaging replacement, it relies on the stock app. Of course with freezing ..if it jacks something up you can just thaw it.

otherwise...my suggestion would be this

menu.settings.applications.messaging.clear defaults

this should at least clear those that it is set up as the default for and you will get the window message asking you which you prefer to use next time.

When I look at the settings in messaging, the clear defaults button is grayed, I think because I made handcent be the default (its button is not grayed). I don't want to freeze or remove the stock program, I just want handcent to be the default. handcent opens up automatically when I want to sms from within People - I just want it to do that also from widgets. Note these same widgets have no problem opening gmail instead of stock mail, so it seems like it should work with handcent instead of messages.

I'm not rooted, but I think I will be soon. This is my first android - I came from a Windows 6.1 device where I mucked around in the registry and removed the carrier info from the screen, so I'm not too afraid...

I would uninstall then reinstall handcent.

If that doesn't work with the two widgets, I would uninstall then reinstall those applications.

^ what he said

wait...are those the only two widgets giving you issues? I only used those widgets for about a day but don't both of those apps have a settings menu where you set the default app from within their respective menus?

Ok, thanks for the advice. Uninstalling/reinstalling everything (handcent, sms unread count and executive assistant) didn't change anything. I did go into the settings on executive assistant and tell it to use Handcent - that works fine now (thanks Mr Ed). But SMS unread count is only a widget and I can't find any settings for it except when you are placing a widget on a page - the settings are limited and not related to choosing which app gets launched.

I was trying to decide between exec assistant vs sms unread count anyway, so maybe now I'm decided.

Thanks everyone.

This is the only thread I have found on this in my long search for a solution. Any resolution to use SMS Unread Count to launch Handcent? No solution found anywhere.
