Help handwriting rcognition is AWFUL!

I'm hoping there is some kind of learning mode for handwriting recognition because out of the box its just awful. I'm coming from a windows tablet though so my expectations may be high. If the word I'm writing is in the spell checker dictionary it seems to be a bit better, but iits not then it usually gets mangled very badly and I have to sit there and backspace and rewrite it several times, usually I switch to the keyboard in frustration. Also forget about writing more than one word at a time, it will combine them, I have to write one word then pause as it recognizes it, then write the next. Also you can't write letters over each other, in windows you could just continuously overwrite letters on top of each other and it would recognize them as continuous letters in a word, makes it much easier to write in a cramped space. Backpacking with the pen is very hit and miss as well.

So am I missing a learning mode? I've tried to write as legibly as I can but am just not getting acceptable results.

I don't have an issue with the keyboard at all.

I'm just going to chalk up the previous reply as your post not being read. :D
Now regarding HANDWRITING I don't use it often cause I'm not impressed. Seems like too much work just to eek out one word.

Depending on the size you write, if you space the word and keep writing underneath it allows for multiple words. I don't use it too often, so I'm not sure about it learning.

Using the pen for writing text messages for me is unusable. Using the pen for writing notes works great. So you would think it's the app that may have the issue? However I don't see myself ever using the pen for text messages. I've not seen anything about learning mode and hand writing.

Are you a medical doctor by any chance? :) Seriously, I have very few problems with either handwriting or swipe though I usually use the latter. If I recall correctly I'm still on the default settings at

Menu / Settings/ Language and Input / Default (Samsung keyboard) / Set up input methods / Settings (the cog wheel ) / Handwriting.

I'm currently using 'Stroke recognition'. If are on the same setting and you have not already done so, you might like to try 'Complete recognition' instead.

Also, have you checked out the Tutorial on the same screen?

This.
It made all the difference in the world for me. I am surprised they didn't make it the default.

Also, try writing in script, it's amazingly good at reading it.

Handwriting to text? I kinda agree, but at the same time, my writing is awful. As far as actual handwriting script on Notes, that's a completely different story. I love how the S-pen shows my writing compared to other stylii in the past w/ other smartphones, including capacitive stylii. The wacom digitizer makes a huge difference in my writing looking decent, as compared to others that I've used (I used to have a HTC Flyer w/ the HTC stylus and my writing always looked horrible and the capacitive stylus always lagged).

Cool thanks for the suggestions. I also really am growing to love the swipe keyboard, I find myself using it much more often, it's uncanny how accurate it is.

Yeah, the integrated swiftkey flow function (aka swype) on the stock Samsung keyboard is what has kept me on the OEM keyboard. On top of that, I love how Samsung decided to add a dedicated number row on the virtual keyboard.

Try a new keyboard, not happy with what you have, try SwiftKey

The only negative on the keyboard is the lack of punctuation. You have to either switch the keyboard, or long press a key, it just kind of ruins the speed and rhythm.

I find that handwriting with the S pen is pretty good. My wife is a lefty and happens to have bad penmanship it she thinks its spot on. She has to backspace at time but for her chicken scratch writing I'm impressed. She especially likes the note taking. But she has an iPhone 5 and I quickly take my phone back after 5 minutes.

Well, considering that none of the virtual keyboards have individual buttons for punctuation, I'm okay with it. Now, if they somehow were able to create a "truly" complete virtual QWERTY, that'd be amazing. Maybe there'll be enough room to do it on the Note 3?

I am actually in the camp that prefers the handwriting to text keyboard function.

You are correct that out of the box, it doesn't work well.

You need to do a little practicing to do it almost perfectly.

For instance, you have to write neatly and emphasize your lines. Seems like "M" and "W" are the two hardest letters to translate.

For me, the most difficult part of the handwriting to text is holding the S-PEN and not hitting the button on its side.

Once you begin using the handwriting keyboard option more regularly, I think you will be surprised just how accurately it begins to translate. It's not always perfect, but it's the first option I always select when writing a text message or replying to an email.

I am going to look into changing the settings as described above (and in the link) to see if I can improve the recognition even more.

Edit: Changed my settings from "stroke" to "complete recognition" and it really didn't make a difference for me. In fact, I prefer "stroke" as I prefer keeping the writing space empty as I write my texts.

baylake,

Glad to have a fellow S-Pen hand writer on board.

What are your secrets for perfecting the handwriting to text?

I don't know really I have the pen at 5 pic & time 2000ms & stroke recognition I tend to write big but the most important thing is the pen is set to blue lol

But the more I use it the better it gets
