Root Has anybody rooted using this tool?

Right i'm rooted! That was ridiculously easy. I'm impressed. Now getting used to using the recovery thing and ROM manager/Super user stuff it installed. TB first of course! Love the fact all my data is still there.

What was that thing a while back that HTC had on all their phones recording everything? I heard there was no way to remove it without a root so i presume i can now remove it? What was the file called?

It was HTCLogger.apk. There's also a "little" furore at the moment about something called Carrier IQ. I don't think either were present in Sense 2.1 though so you might be fine. As DURX has already pointed out, if you're running a custom ROM, you'll def be fine anyway.

Yeah, that was the only downside to the old method, with the downgrade you lost everything. If you're messing around in clockwork before installing anything, be very careful, especially in the mounts and storage menu; don't start formatting stuff until you're ready to install a ROM ;)

Are you def going for MIUI first?

Yup going for MIUI without a doubt. I'll probably have a look at what options they give me in the clockwork but not actually press anything and start something that screws me over.

Heard about Carrier IQ as well but fair enough if im using a custom ROM, i guess they would have sorted that so yeah. Especially since MIUI isn't a sense ROM.

There aren't too many decent roms in rom manager at the moment, and the ones that are good are out of date :( there is a miui one on there but its the US version, not sure if it will make a difference or not

Anyone know the reason why some of my apps were backed up with a market link but others were not? Seems a bit odd since the majority of the ones without a market link were downloaded from the market so do have a link.

Also where is the best place to pull the latest MIUI ROM then? Their site has a DHD one so i presume that, or is XDA even more up to date and better? Cheers.

I always go with xda, but the official websites should always have the latest version. I just find xda easier as all the roms are there to choose from :)

Paid apps retain their market links, if you want to relink apps to the market, you'll have to pay for the proper version of TB.

And yeah, XDA for ROMs.

I see, i'll probably do that then, gotta have it link back to the market.

Anything i need to look out for when getting a ROM over at XDA? I'll stick to the Desire HD section of course but i mean all of them will be compatible after that won't they? Just a case of whether i want to change a radio at the same time which i probably won't if such a case arises.

Nah, they should all be fine. If you post which one you want to go for before you do, I'll have a look and see if it has any particular/unique install instructions.

Re the radio, it's easy, but I'd only really change if you notice signal or battery issues. The Ace Hack Kit looks like it does it for you too, so it should be easier than using the fastboot method.

As for paying for TB, I'd obviously encourage it, the app is cracking and the dev is really forthcoming with updates so he's worth supporting. However, your apps should install themselves again if you link back to the same gmail account so you could just use TB to back up data on an app by app basis. Up to you though.

That's what i tried to do before but then i signed into my gmail account and nothing downloaded itself. It had somehow lost the data on my previous apps, probably by refreshing just after the format or something. Anyway i always double check now and backup to two places. TB is definitely worth the money.

Of course with the radio if i do have problems then i'd change but as you say, only if i see a signal/battery issue or something similar.

Good stuff.

Like I say, let me know which one you're going for and I'll see if there are any special install instructions. You seem relatively switched on anyway so I'm guessing there's nothing that's going to cause you any problems.

Rooted without a problem :D :D

Took about 5 mins (using OSX Leopard) and booted fine, complete with superuser, cwm etc.

So there you have it, the easiest method I have come across after lots of searching

what did you do when it said something about aakh*.zip????

Some of my apps are still being backed up without market links with the PRO version. Angry birds being one, few other games. I know that apps i've downloaded from the Amazon app store can't be linked back so fair enough. I guess the majority are games so i'll just note them down and download them again, this is just a precaution anyway, if they don't all automatically download via gmail.

Time to find a decent MIUI ROM.

Can anyone help with this? [FIX]Unable to install large apps like MAPS from market..

In the FAQs it says i need to do this to install large apps from the market. Did the hack kit sort me out with a terminal app or something like that?

EDIT: Ok looks like if i change the hboot to one with a bigger cache then it'll work fine, it's just the MIUI hboot cache is only 5mb. Not that i know how to do that haha.

So the new version of Lordmod's Kernel came out (seems like I am getting addicted to doing stuff to my phone now and want to try it :D)

Will I have to change some of the files around in the zip, and also have to download the MIUI version again? Unfortunately I don't have enough posts on xda to post on that thread :(

I'm presuming so, his newer kernels are designed for the nightlies I believe.

I'll post and let you know.

Thought i was getting up to speed with flashing new kernels until i re read this!:o
I'm using CM7.1 stable and i flashed Lordmod 8.5 but should i have used the Miui versionn of Lordmod??? did he say something about 8.5 was just for the nightlies and that if you had the 7.1 stable to use Miui version of his kernel??

If this is the case it probably explains why i'm not seeing similar battery performance as you guys.

Any advice would go down a treat.

Cheers

Thanks!

When I got my DHD, the game demo Asphalt was force closing every time I tried to play it, so I wanted to get rid of it. Telus didn't have any suggestions on how to fix it. They also told me I couldn't uninstall it. Oh, really :D

They can barely get their online member login working....don't try and confuse them even more with a question like that :D

Hi and thanks for all the info, first I'm fairly new to the Android rooting/ROM scene but I have been playing with similar stuff for years, from satellite cards to Wii/PS3 hacks and so on. I'm an IT professional in network and hardware.

After following the procedure listed to root, then apply the CM7.1 rom to my HTC DHD, the first reboot went fine, I had access to the 3G and phone network, then I followed the part where you restore the apps with Titanium and as soon as I rebooted the phone I started getting a cycling com.phone.android force close error.

It's cycling and in between popups, I would get a couple bars signal on the phone meter, nothing on the 3G, not even a 3G icon, then the force close and the signal drop to 0.

I'm now restoring (thank God I made a backup with ClockworkMod before proceeding) the original settings, keeping my fingers crossed to get a functional phone.

What might have gone wrong?

I'm on the Canadian Telus network, with Desire HD and a 16Gb microSD card. Not sure if more info is needed.

Thanks in advance.

Could have been a bad flash... obviously, you took a backup... did you do a full wipe before you flashed the new ROM?

I followed the instructions to the letter, they call to format system/data/cache, I did it in the order listed in the (excellent) procedure.

Thing is, my original first download of the update cm 7.1 zip file went wrong, it was only 17Mb and when I tried installing it as per the procedure, naturally it failed. So I removed the SD Card, copied a good (like 90Mb or so) redownloaded version of the zip file, rebooted the phone into the recovery utility and installed it, I did not re-wipe but the phone never booted back into whatever was left after wiping/factory reset and formatting system/data/cache.

Was that wrong?

Also to get the phone back to normal I simply rebooted into recovery by holding the VOL-/power button. It's back to stock (rooted but normal Telus rom with HTC Sense) now.
