Has the DROID lost its Charm?

BTW.. I don't think people question rooting so much because of how daunting a task it is. But more because it VOIDS your warranty, and no app does that.

Unless you click a single button to un-root before sending it in for warranty.

If you brick your phone, there is no telling if you will be able to do this

You can't brick the droid by rooting or failing to root . There is a way to restore in the root forums even if you somehow made the phone stop working. I have never heard of anyone bricking the droid.

If you do not root, then yes, the phone is getting old and the Droid X is better in every department. But in my case I took back the X because there is no true way to have total control over the phone. I love the idea of custom roms and overclocking and I felt that Motorola was punishing people for trying to make the experience better. And if HTC releases an Evo like phone without that nasty boot loader that would be worth it.
Bottom line is that if your not willing to root then upgrade. Rooting alone solves over half your problems. Why not keep your Droid, root it and then buy the new gen ipod touch and do a wifi tether on the go. You will have no new contract,a iphone 4 minus the phone, access to both android and apple apps and will be able to sell the ipod touch without tons of money lost or give it as a gift. The other option is to buy the iphone 4 but in my book I will never sign 2 years with the devil called AT&T. You will have buyers remorse when Stevie boy release iphone 4gs (with the fix) next year. Windows 7 does not look good to me, Palm pre is not moving fast enough and Blackberry is just Blackberry.
And by the way, I've rooted 3 motorola droids without any issues and I was new to android. Just have to read and follow directions.

Because I have a rooted Droid, it's never lost it's charm. Every time a new ROM comes out is like Christmas morning, and they come out pretty often. And I got my Droid on Day 1, so I've had 10 months of awesome. With every new Droid incarnation that comes out, I never feel envious because my Droid remains capable and comparable to them.

And it's not that hard. I'm not a very tech-savvy guy, but I did my homework and now I'm even reviewing ROMs here. This can be done, has been done, and will be done again. I'm not trying to call you guys out, but having the Droid and not rooting is like having Peyton Manning handing off.

OK, going through the forums is confusing when it comes to rooting. What would you and or others consider the definitive guide to use for rooting, preferably one that would allow the use of ROM manager to semi automatically update the ROM.

It is also difficult with so many ROMs out there to decide which works the best as no one has seemed to ranked them.

Cool. Good to know. I am more or less playing devils advocate here, because I have rooted twice with no issue whatsoever.
