I already have APEX and would like to keep it, but want to try Liberty now. I've done the backup, and now I'm at

yes factory reset will wipe apex off your phone AFTER you factory reset and then instal liberty. (but will not wipe your back up/ the actual act of factory resetting wont wipe apex....factory resetting is just preparing for the liberty install; installing liberty will wipe apex)

if you want to play it real safe:
go in to advanced and wipe battery and dalvick
back to menu and wipe cache and factory reset
in to mounts and mount system and data (will say 'unmount' when they are mounted correctly)
select zip and install liberty (then back to menu and tell it to reboot)
once in android go in to settings and privacy and do a factory reset
once in to android again do a reboot
now make your liberty back up.
(this is a little over kill but its how id do it)
you now have a fresh liberty back up

edit:
of course; let the market restore apps and google restore contacts.

personally (and this is just me), after doing this for a bit; i dont use back ups anymore.
i install everything clean and let the market restore my apps and google restore my contacts.
if i go to a different rom then i wipe everything and just start over fresh.
i feel like using back ups is just asking for an issue. others will say different but thats just how i feel.

so say im on liberty and want to try fission.
i follow the directions i posted up there and set my phone back up like i want it once everything is done.

i dont even have any back up apps on my phone anymore except titanium and i only use it for uninstalling apps.

but i know how to sbf and am comfortable doing whatever with this phone.

So is it easy to witch between Apex and Liberty, from the way some people have talked it's easy to switch from one ROM to the next and you can have several at once (only using one at a time of course)?

Edit:The main thing I don't like about Apex is I lose my universal inbox. If I get a yahoo email, I get a notification, but can't get to it from that notification. I have to go straight into yahoo mail for it.

yes you can just restore a back up (think i used to use rom manager)
personally its just as easy for me to follow the directions i used above and install the rom clean.
still pretty easy. (and not even use a back up....google backs up anything i care about....apps and contacts).

for example;
right now on my sd card i have a folder called 342 (rom leak) and inside it are my themes i like when im running 342 and anything special for that rom that i may need.
then there is another folder called fission261 with the same type contents.

if i went to switch roms; i just boot in to recovery, wipe everything, install the other rom and let google back up all my apps/contacts. done.

other people use back ups. they just restore their back up and they are back on whatever they backed up.

Doing it, still setting google account up. The yellow is looking kind of hideous but it seems I might be getting better reception.

you can theme it
just download a theme for the exact version of liberty you are running.
boot in to recovery; do not wipe anything, mount system, install zip theme, reboot.
expect a long boot on any theme that changes colors of status bar or system text color....it takes a bit.

edit; shouldnt take to long for google to get your stuff back on oyour phone. every now and then for some reason it will show me my apps in the market but not put them back on my phone.

normarlly it will have some downloades paused and if you scroll down youll see that some are downloading.

Thanked you a few times for all the help faber. Anyway to get a universal inbox in either Liberty or Apex or an app that brings all my emails and text messages together?

Apex has the universal inbox. What version were you running. If you were using the latest version you have to go into the tool box and change to the Blur Messaging Suite. The AOSP Messaging Suite is set to default that's why you don't have the universal inbox.

I was running Apex 1.4.1, thanks for the info. I'm running Liberty 1.5 now, I'll see if they have that option too.

Back to the OP's question. Get Rom manager, set it up (it will prompt you to install clockwork recovery)
Use Rom Manager to make a copy of your current rom and name it whatever. Then wipe data, system and delvik cache. Download the rom and go. I do not worry about having backups and switching between them BUT I do go through the process of wiping again before I restore a backup. YMMV.

I would not totally wipe out a rom just to try another. Besides data is not only hidden in backups, if you really want to clean your phone of any gremlins you have to go thru this method (too much hassel for me):

Yeah, I've already switched to Liberty, I guess we can let this thread die.
