It's fairly common that people install TWRP 1.x through a root guide, then later install 4ext recovery.

I had never used TWRP in my life, but I was curious as to how it ran, so I installed it. My opinion? It's a great recovery. Very intuitive, easy to use.

One thing that I thought was fantastic was my backup was about 750mb smaller through TWRP, using their built-in compression. It also took about 150 seconds less to make the backup than on 4EXT. The restore was about 100 seconds faster than 4EXT.

The one thing I don't like is that if someone is hastily moving through the wipe menu, they may accidentally wipe the "external storage" (SD Card), even though there's a confirmation screen. I'd really like to see a "Wipe everything except SD Card" option in the wipe menu.

Additionally, while restoring my backup was seamless, it never actually booted up. While I wanted to love TWRP (and I do, largely), I will be going back to 4EXT. What about you?

What about you all? Who's got the best recovery out there? Have you tried them both? Share your experiences!

I've used them all, CWM, TWRP version 1 and 2, and I still feel the most comfortable with 4EXT recovery, plus the dev is extremely good with user feedback. +1  :p

My old favorite was Amon RA... it was awesome. There were others before it, but I can't remember their names right now.

I used both twrp and 4ext on my Evo 3D before I retired it.

Imo twrp then wasn't nothing to brag about.

4ext on the other hand, 2 features I loved, paid version, comes with the 4ext app and it allows you to choose to back up, wipe, flash etc without you manually doing anything in recovery ;)

Smart flash for s on users I liked too since I never went s off :p

Oh how I wished 4ext would come to the gs3

You can use twrp with goo manager and do all of the things the 4ext recovery paid app can do, and its free. The only thing 4 ext has over twrp is smart flash.

Does TWRP use the touch screen now? I can't handle having to use the volume buttons to navigate my recovery menu.

That's the problem with guides sometimes. They get written, but not always updated. I saw that there was a later version of TWRP available, but I went with the guide version. Then, as suspected, I switched to 4EXT. How does that compression work? Seems like an awful lot of compression to me.

I'm still running Amon Ra on my OG EVO. I dabble in that forum from time to time, and it seems that there's a new kid (recovery) on the block that everyone says you need to switch to. I don't recall the recovery name, but it's perceived in the same manner as 4EXT is here. I'm not planning on switching as my OG EVO is more of an alarm right now. I had such big plans for that retired phone...but I can't get used to using it as a pocket PC/MP3 player...I'll just use my phone instead :p

Given that the EVO V has a history of alarm issues, I keep the OG EVO around mainly as a morning alarm. I probably charge it once a week or so.

The backups for 4EXT create tar files but those are only archives and not compressed. That is true on any Unix or Linux system and a compression utility like gzip is needed to reduce the size of the archives.

TWRP already offers compression of it's archive files which is one of the reasons it's backups are not compatible with CWM, in addition to the directory location and the format itself being different. The developer of 4EXT has said he will offer compression as an option at some point, probably in the next generation, but that will make the backups incompatible with both CWM and TWRP since TeamWin changes their format periodically.

I like TWRP personally. I always have.

I used it on the Triumph, the One V, Evo V, and my Galaxy Victory.

I have only used twrp 1.1.1 so I can't give a fair assessment. I switched from that to 4ext and obviously comparing 4ext to twrp 1.1.1 is a no brainer. 4ext has met all my needs, I'm used to it, I like it, no need to switch. Have thought about checking out the newer twrp but it seems pointless. If it ain't broke..... and all that.

My TWRP always fails restoring WiMax, I have to restore only Boot, Data, and System to be able to boot up after restore

I installed TWRP recovery in my htc amaze, now I have accidentally gotten it soft bricked, I don't know what to do. I read somewhere in a guide that to revert to stock GB rom i need to install 4EXT recovery which has smartflash function , but the problem is my phone is stuck in bootloop and I'm confuesed If I can now flash the 4EXT recovery, in order to use smartflash functionality for going back to stock ROM.. Any method to install 4EXT recovery in this situation? please help me :(
