Root Hello & help!

Hi everybody,
I'm getting impatient waiting for an OTA update to Gingerbread for my OpV. I've been thinking about rooting & I've been doing some looking around the web to see how to do it. Wow. There's A LOT of stuff out there, but it's very confusing. I haven't found a nice step by step, foolproof so even a n00b can do it, list on how to do this. I understand that there is a lot a person can do with a rooted phone, but my one and only goal is just to put Gingerbread on my phone. Not a GB theme, but actual android 2.3

My husband tried to do this already on his OpV, and has gotten so far as to have Gingerbreak and he says that he unlocked superuser. That's as far as he's got. We (I) decided that if he can do it to his phone, successfully, and doesn't brick it, then I'll do it to mine.

Me, I'm a list maker. I read the instructions on things, so I'm the kind of person that *needs* a step by step list.

Can y'all help me?

Step by step and you should have a nice new rom installed.
There will most likely never be a OTA update to 2.3, the phone has been sold for almost 2 years now, and it's brother the Optimus S from Sprint has already got the OTA update. Since it's pre-paid instead of post-paid, there are fewer updates.

After my initial post, I came upon the guide you mentioned. Step by step, just like I needed. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, but I do some things best when I have a nice list in front of me (recipes, compounding prescriptions in the pharmacy I work for, etc.) Until today, I wasn't finding a concise how-to guide on doing this.

It worked!

I was nervous as all get out, but my husband's phone is now running 2.3.7!!!
