Root help a rookie how to install a custom rom..

I'm just scratching the surface of realizing how much stock stuff sucks....
Well here goes nothing...wish me luck...lol...hope I don't brick it..haha
 
Remember this:
If it goes 12 minutes and doesn't auto reboot the phone, pull battery and try again.
If it errors out, double check that you have Android/USB Debugging box checked in menu/settings/applications/development. Pull battery and try again.

It might take as many as 10 attempts for it to gain root access.

Doh! Your so right.
I've been trying to get two computer towers working the last two days and must have forgot what had already been done by the OP.

The first one was easy, an old slow 512GB RAM HP with a 80GB hard drive. It now has Snowlinux on it and running faster than it ever did with Windows.

The second one was an old Dell Optiplex GX620 that used to have Windows XP professional, but had Windows 7 Home Premium installed before I got it. Plates on master hard drive separated. Found an old 80GB hard drive laying around, and now it's running Windows XP Professional again on the 80GB slave hard drive, and Xubuntu 12.04 on the 80GB master hard drive.
Got a few more little things to straighten out on it and I'll be able breath easier and think like a normal person again.

As a matter of fact I'm using the Dell right now.
Bought my first computer in 2009. Not to shabby for an old dog (got to keep the brain working somehow).
 
Using terminal emulator...
In line 3, after I type the code and hit enter I get this : / sdcard/flash_image/ : invalid length
Shows up immediately after hitting enter, but in the next line I get a # also. As if I supposed to continue..
Is that an error or is that supposed to say it?...
I'm asking because the word " invalid" usually means nothing good lol
 
When I downloaded flash_image from the link, it came unzipped, and is on the sd card not IN a download folder but AS a folder. So I moved it down to the bottom where zenrecovert.img is..
The only thing, now it says flash_image - copy.
It won't let me rename to just flash_image.
 
Ok...terminal didn't work so I used flash image GUI.
Flashed the zen r.
It said " success, flashing the recovery..
And ..nothing happened ...how do u get into the recovery? To do my nandroid backup...
 
In post #31 you had a syntax error. Thats why it didn't work. If you ever get an error, stop, exit the emulator by typing in exit, then hitting the return.
Open it back up and try again.
PS; The error was where you put a space after the / then "sdcard" it should have read:
cat /sdcard//flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image(return)

Next Post. There is no need to move something in a directory, it messes things up, as you can see. As long as it is in the right directory it will be seen/found by the code.

Next Post. Pull battery and replace. Hold down HOME +VOLUME DOWN then POWER. Hold them all until you see the LG logo, then let go. It will boot into the custom recovery where you can make a backup.

I'll keep an eye out for your post if you have problems with the ROM and Gapps flashing (always ask before doing, so you don't do wrong).

Bad Blue mentioned that the best ROM for our phone is the Mirage. i cant see it in the list of ROM's ,in the "all things root" section.
unless its under an abbreviation or something, and i can't tell which it is.
where can i find it?...or if you think i should flash another one, which would it be.
i don't have the knowledge yet to tell the difference...
also, do i need gapps for the Mirage?

few questions:
what gapps are we talking here? basic operating apps like camera, gallery, etc..that are essential for the phone, or apps that we just download from the app store..?
do they come w the new ROM?
also, i noticed the dolphin browser works better than the stock. since i downloaded the dolphin, can i uninstall the stock browser?...will i get a new and better browser w the new ROM automatically?
i will go over the guide for flashing the custom ROM few times before i flash. it seems pretty simple. i just wanna make sure i get the whole thing understood.
..and finally, from what i understand, from now on all i have to do is download a ROM/theme..etc, put it on the root of sd card and go into recovery to flash, correct?

..i know its a lot of questions, im just trying to make sure i get the whole concept.

You answered all my questions w the "rootzwiki" link. That's a absolute great post. It explained EVERYTHING about gapps.

U sent me 4 links :

1st - I downloaded Mirage ROM.

2nd - (assuming that's the gapps I need) ..web page not available..but no biggie..found in " rootzwiki"

3rd - "rootzwiki" - found 20110828 in the list of gapps. Right underneath is the " google talk". When u said " without the talk" means I only download the 20110828, and not the one underneath?

4th - Mirage thread. Is that for information purposes, or do I have to download anything from there?

I know ure busy, no need to hurry w replies..thanx again
 
Right, just download the 20110828 gapps (not) the one underneath.
I put the link for mirage rom thread in there because it's good to at least read the devs first page, he tells about the rom, gives links, how to set it up.

And if you ever have trouble or questions about the rom you should post them there, although you'll have to register to get links. There's also a theme you can download for the rom.

WHEW!!, DODGED MY FIRST BULLET...
The gapps in "rootzwiki" led me to a site that had the gapps I needed .
The downloaded file was: gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
In the recovery Mirage ROM installed no problem.
The gapps installation was aborted. It said it couldn't read the zip. ( bad)

Wasn't quite sure what to do at this point, lol, I was eyeing the " reboot" option, but decided to go w the restore option. LUCKY THING I DID lol.
So now I'm back at square one, disaster averted.

What's wrong with those gapps?

I'm getting the hang of it I think. AND, I understand why u stressed out the nandroid backup being that important. U basically saved my phone. Thanks :).
 
Fixed link, link is now for CyanogenMod Gapps.
Tested by downloading the 20110828 gapps and checking MD5 sum. MD5 sum checked out.
 
Thanks. I found it in the xda site. But couldn't see the MD5 sum. Only said 6.11MB. Lol...

Well, I flashed Mirage and the gapps. It took about a minute to reboot and do all its work, and it seems to be working just fine. :).

Seems like a lot but its pretty straighforward..
