Root Help answer a noobs root questions?

It can never hurt to try too many Roms, you are bound to find one you like.

I just want to say thank you to everyone that posted on this thread. I am trying to learn all I can prior to my first venture into rooting & romming. Threads like this really help take away the mystery of romming. You all are awesome!

Couldn't agree more. :D This place has some of the most patient and helpful people of any forum I frequent. I'm glad my questions inspired a thread that helped someone other than just me :p

hey bigbabys, so are you still on DarkSlide X? if not, why not?

can you compare it with OTA Gingerbread, i.e., is it faster or more stable? if it's better, how exactly?

what do you dislike about it?

i'm running rooted 602 OTA and am trying to decide whether or not i want to try DarkSlide X. like you, i want to try a ROM that is very stable and fast...

My experiences with OTA GB where all negative. But in hindsight, it is most likely because I installed it over my heavily customized Froyo (I was unrooted) and the lack of a data wipe made the upgrade break everything. That being said, with the very very little time I spent on rooted GB .596 I can say that Darkslide X was better for these reasons:

Slighly Faster
Had the same stability
Had less bloat
Had same battery life (not a perk over stock, but a perk over 2init roms)
Had a better "look" to it, I personally thought GB stock was hideous.

There may have been more perks, but I'm having trouble remembering them. I highly suggest you try it out though, I loved it. Just make a nandroid backup and if it's not for you then restore your backup.

All that being said. Darkslide X is based off .596 so I don't know if you can just flash it over your rooted .602. Coincidentally I recently switched from Darkslide X to Shuji 2.0. Shuji 2.0 is better maintained (Darkslide X hasn't been updated since June AFAIK) and is based off the .602 kernel so you can for sure flash it right over your current rom (I just did this).

Shuji has even less bloat
Is just as snappy
Looks nice as well
Super stable (just like Darkslide X)
Has some nifty tools like Rom Toolbox and DSP Manager

I liked a select few things about Darkslide X better, most notably the fact that it uses some of the newer blur apps that I actually like (like the new blur camera and alarm clock and gallery) while Shuji is still using Froyo versions. Darkslide X also came with all the Google Apps installed already, Shuji you need to install them manually. In the end it just means you need to do a little more work to get what you want out of Shuji, but I'm still happy I switched.

I hope that answers your questions, hit me up if you have any more :)

this is awesome feedback, thanks a lot!

while i do have a current nandroid backup, i've never tried restoring one so i want to make sure the risk is worthwhile (worst case, i'd just have to reflash, reinstall and configure my apps, not really a big deal, i know).

i have read numerous reports over at MyDroidWorld from folks who successfully flashed DarkSlideX over rooted OTA 602, reports state that the new radio is retained but the Gingerbread base is downgraded to 596 (as expected).

i hate making decisions :)

I hear ya, my experience with a nandroid backup has been flawless. You just wipe data/cache and restore and it's like nothing ever happened. My best advice is to explore. Thats what I did and I actually had fun with it. And the more comfortable you get with it the more risks you are willing to take. I was scared to do anything at first, but now I'm comfortable enough to try pretty much anything. Knowing the worst case scenario based on what your doing helps. And if you are patient and follow instructions the worst you could possibly need to do is SBF your phone and start from scratch :D
