Root Help choosing a Rom?

dustwun77

Endeavor to Persevere :)
Hello there, I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the different Roms and kernals and terminology. :)

I haven't had Evo a month but rooted it last night. Glad I didn't turn it into a paperweight! Thanks for the help with that! :)

I don't know the difference between Sense and Android characteristics but i am happy with what came stock on 2.3.3 and I assume that is Sense, so that is fine. Is 3.0 better?

I am looking for something quick and simple to actually use this root option.

I have Titanium Backup and backed up everything. I made a B/U with Clockwork and then switched, per sticky suggestion, to the AM Ra recovery and made a B/U with it too. Put them all on my pc, as well.

Looking for a Rom that would fulfill the following: or close.

I have been led to believe that the Voice Search worked better in a noisy environment (car) before the GB upgrade. I would like that to work please! :)

Would like 4g to work, though I barely have access to it. I would like to be able to tether, wirelessly primarily but via usb as well a plus.

Would like to be able to use setcpu and remove or hide bloatware too.

I was looking at one Rom that seemed pretty cool but I exited out of that page and I'll be damned if I can find it again... :)

Any help appreciated!

Sounds like you should stick with a sense ROM for starters. MikG
Go to the roms and kernels sticky at the top of the forum and look up MikG. It will link you to another forum called the mikmik. Create an account, its as easy as here. Find MikG under the EVO section and download the latest version.
Place this on your SD card.
Back up any apps you want to take with you, with titanium backup.
Boot to recovery, make a nandroid.
Wipe cache partition and dalvik cache, then wipe data / factory reset.
Choose install update.zip
Choose from SD card.
Select MikG.
Select go back when done, and reboot phone.
It may take a little while be patient. Once it boots, sign back into Google etc.
Download titanium backup and restore your apps.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestion and the step by step!

A quick question please, if i want to go back to whatever it is I have now, do I just boot into recovery and recover what i backed up previously?

Might be a silly question but I'd rather ask it now than assume anything. :)

Thanks again!

I WOULD definitively check out this rom, its called Mik3D! This is the first rom i have ever used (Except stock Ofc :P) and so far its quite awesome! It removes bloatware, you can wirelessly tether (Tested and it worked) 4G is INDEED enabled and can be used. It comes stock with Sense 3.0 which is very nice. And one of the best things about it... its under 300Mb so its a small rom and has Sweet features! Like i said this is only the first ROM i have tried Just a 'noobs' opinion XD check it out..
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/384611-rom-mik3d-beta-1-8-15-2011-a.html

And to your question, I believe all you need to do is boot into recovery and select back up & restore and select restore! PLEASE Correct me if i am wrong

Cool, I'll prob try that next, gonna give 4.5 a shot first, been around a while, looks like, may be stable. I just downloaded it too. :)

Thanks again!

In my opinion aosp is the way to go...sense is nice and all but from what I have experienced, sense drains your battery like a mofo....the best combo I've had on MY phone is either evodeck or cm7 with the tiamat kernel...I haven't had good battery life on ANY sense rom..but I can't speak for everyone.

Its really all about opinion! Personally im used to sense only because it came with the phone. Now i dont have anything against Aspo but id just prefer sense. I really dont care if it drains my battery, im used to charging my phone frequently anyways >.< I've never truly tried Stock Android so i dont wanna give an opinion on it just yet. Ill probably try out cm7 while there isnt anything on my phone :D

Uh, so how long is a little while? :) Only been a few minutes but it seems like forever.

I used the 'reboot' option in recovery instead of 'power off' and restarting it.

Have a white HTC EVO 4G screen on solid, is that what it is supposed to be doing or is it stuck?

This is nerve wracking the first time. :)

i like ALOT of things about sense..but im more about customizations and theming..which aosp wins hands down...but then with AOSP you rarely get gps working fully and for people that get 4G,theres usually never working 4g with AOSP...and not to mention NO 720p video! wtf right..lol but since my evo is on METROPCS,i dont have all the options you SPRINT users have..lol ballin on a budget.

Yeah, that's probably normal. The evo isn't meant for sense 3, so these larger roms (though the 3d is small... check out some of the others with sense 3... (ie requiring partitioning of sd...)).. well some take a while. Yeah, it's nerve wracking the first time thats for sure. It's also nerve wracking the first time something goes wrong and you have to re-flash or get a quick boot loop... don't worry about it. Just nandroid.

still sitting here with the white screen. How long should this take? 4.5 was a smaller rom, looked like.

And also, if this thing is stuck, what exactly am I supposed to do to unstick it? will power button work or do I have to pull the battery?

Wait 10 to 15 minutes, if it doesn't switch over to the boot animation just pull the battery.
Then boot into recovery and wipe everything, then try another ROM. Or you could try to download it again, and try to re flash it.
Or you could just go into backup and restore and restore your last nandroid.

Well, got tired of that.

pulled the battery, booted back into recovery, told it to reboot again, and plugged in my power cord.

Had white screen again for a moment, then a black screen came up with a flashing mikfroyo over and over again, felt good to see it doing something, now it looks like it is done.

Let me check this out, took less that 5 minutes after I pulled battery and plugged in power. battery wasn't low to begin with. :)

On to the nxt part of the saga! not a freakin paperweight yet. :p

Wow. this is cool looking, see what it will do.

Thanks for the response, was gettin awful lonely over here. :o

No problem! That's a great Rom enjoy. :)
Also its actually really hard to brick you phone, FYI. :D
Flashing radios and having an epic fail is probably the only way you will brick your piece. ;)

I don't know what aosp is, standard android? where do I go to look at that?

I do use the gps a good bit, and can get 4g a few places, looks like I might need to stick with sense.

plus, I don't know anything about customizing or theming yet. appreciate the thought tho. :D

AOSP = Android Open Source Project.

You got it, it's the 'standard' android. Sense takes android and changes some things (the UI for example).

I'm using CM7 and can get 4g. Some have it, some don't. Though, I think all sense roms have it.

Alot of people use cm7, everytime I try it something goes wrong though I have a backup of it that I toy around with. I use Savaged Zen rc4 with the latest kernel, but alot of people have problems with it, its the only one that runs great on my phone. Anyway aosp roms are barebones roms with the basic features and in customs versions have some added in features like built in overclocking, undervolting, and a notification widget built into the status bar that is customizable ( and very cool). Aosp roms usually have a GPS fix and in mine and cm7 4g work. I'm not sure about HDMI mirroring I never use it. But once I made the switch from sense I really realized what I was.missing out on, aosp roms really bring out the best in performance ( on my evo anyway). I hope you check some out, try some different kernels. Oh yeah and Savaged Zen rc4 has wireless teather working.

I have been running Deck's gingerbread rom for quite awhile but switched over to MikG 2.6 this morning. It actually run smoother for me with GoLauncher than AOSP roms do. It's really a testament to Mik and his team as a developer, but there's no way a Sense 2.1+3.0 tank should perform so well.

I am curious as to what is the best rom for someone that uses the mobile hotspot feature. In saying that the 4G is important to.
The hotspot feature is very important to me for I am always away and need to use my laptop for work.

Another question cause I am real new to this also is how does WiFi affect the mobile hotspot?

All feedback is greatly appreciated.

MikG is sweet you'll like it. You might also want to check out Mik3D. It's full sense 3.0, with the 3D carousel, and 4G works. It's based off of the EVO 3D, so you should be good to go with the hotspot. I don't use those too often so I'm not really sure if that works with 3D.
Nandroid your current setup and try out a few roms, you can always restore your last setup if you make a nandroid. ;)
