Help flashing rom (newbie)

I'll start off by saying I'm a noob when it comes to doing advanced things with my Android, but I think I'm making good progress. I own an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 and I've recently upgrade to ICS 4.0.3. I have an SGH-I777 and my phone displays Samsung GT-I9100 upon boot up. :)

I've also installed ICS siyahkernal 3.4.2 and rooted to get Superuser access. The ROM that seems would best fit my needs is WanamLite, but I'm not able to get it installed. Wanam's instructions to get it installed are:

  1. Copy the Rom to your Sdcard
  2. Go to recovery using APM or the 3 buttons (DO NOT USE ANY APP TO FLASH THE ROM)
  3. Do a Nandroid backup
  4. A Wipe data is recommended if your current Rom isn

Hm...that's weird, because I have the SGH-I777 and I'm running GT-I9100 and Siyah kernal, after following instructions found here:

galaxys2root (dot) com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/

Everything appears to be working better than ever, even if it's incompatible?

Guys,

I've moved this over to the SGSII for AT&T all-things-root area since it seems that that's the proper root device section (thanks to a kind heads-up from a very helpful member :)).

(Please let me know if that's not correct).

Just want to help ensure that the appropriate device-specific root issues are taken into account.

Cheers!

P.S. and welcome to the the AndroidForums, chbrandt--we are very glad you signed-up with us and very pleased that you were welcomed so nicely above by member ironass.

My mistake, you are using the SGH-i777 Siyah version of the kernel... there's a GT-i9100 version as well.

Whilst the phones are almost identical, the 2 phones firmwares are incompatible with one another as they use different kernels and modems.

Therefore, unless the Wanamalite version you wish to flash is an SGH-i777 build, it will not be compatible.

I have asked that your thread be moved to the SGSII, i777, thread as they can give you more help. :)

what you are looking for is the nandroid option, no? well it's called "backup/restore" in your version of CWM. That should get you going. Any other questions, ask away!
also:
wipe data/factory reset is the next option
then install zip from sdcard is what you want. choose the rom in your root folder and do it.
That should help, too.

Ironass is correct. i9100 roms are not really compatible. They might run, but you will lose functionality with things such as voice calls and the capacitive buttons.

Here is some info about the i9100 boot screen image that shows up on the i777:

forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081

"The Samsung Galaxy S II contains an internal flash counter which is incremented each time a non-stock binary (kernel/rom) is flashed from a computer using Odin or Heimdall. (Using the new Mobile Odin on your phone does not increment the flash counter.) The purpose of the flash counter is believed to be to allow Samsung and or AT&T technicians to detect if the phone has a voided warranty through flashing non-stock firmware. The first time the flash counter is activated, the phone also displays a warning screen on boot up with a yellow warning triangle containing an exclamation point. The warning screen also contains the i9100 logo. (Evidently, Samsung did not change the warning screen from the International version of the Galaxy S II for the AT&T version.)"

Anyway, back to the issue of flashing. The 3 button method (Hold Down Volume + and - and Power Button) should get you into Recovery Mode. The menu should look like the one in this link:

i3.ytimg.com/vi/NS6Ozzif8g8/hqdefault.jpg

Is this what you see?

Ahh...alright, so I was holding the 3 buttons after already plugging my phone into USB, bringing up ODIN mode and not Recovery Mode. I've tried without the USB plugged in and I'm getting the menu now instead. Am I going to royally screw something up if I try to install WanamLite with my current setup:

Model Number: SGH-I777
Kernel: 3.0.35-Siyah-v3.4.2
Firmware: GT-I9100 (This is what shows on-boot)

Thanks for the info on me voiding my warranty. I would be upset if this phone were new, but since I've almost had it a year, I think my warranty was going to be gone soon anyway? Sucks I guess, but rooting should prove worth it.

If this ROM isn't good for my current setup, which would you suggest? Thanks!

I guess I could have just tripped the Flash Counter. I've followed these instructions and done nothing else:

galaxys2root (dot) com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/

I followed that procedure so I know what happens.... if you've done nothing else, you are using the correct kernel, and you have not flashed a rom yet. All you have done is tripped the flash counter. Now, where did you get the rom you were going to flash? You need to make sure of two things: one, that it is compatible with the sgh-i777 and two that it is compatible with the Siyah kernel.

Yeah, don't install Wanamlite. There is a program (Flash-aholicsTool - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484223) that you can use to convert it so it's compatible with the i777, but I would recommend getting used to flashing roms first before jumping into it.

I would try out ShoStock (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563747) just to get your feet wet.

ETA: Kernel compatibility shouldn't be an issue since whatever rom he flashes should install it's own kernel.

Stupid flash counter....I guess I could buy the USB jig to reset it, but I'm not sure there is any point. You agree that it's worth tripping that and voiding warranty to be able to flash roms, use titanium backup, etc.?

Here is the ROM I was looking at:

http://wanamlite (dot) com

and here, it appears it's fine to use with Siyah...

http://wanamlite (dot) com/installation-tips/

But it says it's compatible with I9100 only...so I'm left wondering, is the I777 compatible, and do I REALLY have I9100 firmware, or does the warning screen just show that?

I would listen to loafpincher and install shostock. Also, no you don't have I9100 firmware. You have stock firmware since you haven't flashed a rom yet. It is just the warning screen being silly.

look in your settings under "about phone" and report what it says about model number and android version and kernel version. Please.

also: don't install wanamlite.

Once you get up and running, you can remove the triangle and set the counter back to zero without a USB jig by running the TriangleAway app (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114).

I just successfully rooted my phone for the first time (after a very stressful hour of thinking I bricked my phone).

Model: SGH-I777
OS: 4.0.3
Baseband: I777UCLE5
Kernel: 3.0.35-Siyah-v3.4.2-nomswap+ktoonsez@ktonnsez-VirtualBox))

I want to install as close to a vanilla version of ICS as possible. I found the ROM I want here:

ShoStock ICS ROM for AT&T Galaxy S2 SGH-i777! [Best ROM] | Galaxy S2 Root

But I'm unsure how to get the ROM installed on my newly rooted phone. Any assistance would be appreciated :)

It's fairly easy from here. First you need to download that rom and copy it to the root of your internal phone memory. Once you have the ShoStock2 zip file copied to your phone, then here we go ....

COPY ALL YOUR IMPORTANT DATA TO A SAFE PLACE -- WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO IS GOING TO WIPE YOUR PHONE!

With your phone charged at least above 80% (full would be better) and unplugged from USB and/or the charger, press and hold the vol. up, vol. down and power button until the splash screen flashes, then release the power button but keep holding the volume buttons until you boot into CWM.

Step 1. Back up your phone. Use the vol. up/down buttons to highlight Backup and restore. Press home to select. Choose backup and perform a backup to save your phone in this state should something happen during flashing. This takes a while and may appear to stall several places during the backup. Let it run and be patient. When it's done, use the back key to return to the main CWM menu (above).

Step 2. Select wipe data/factory reset. This will remove your personal data and put the phone in a clean state. It is important to do this when flashing any rom. When that option is highlighted, press home to selct. You'll have to scoll again to the confirmation and press home again. This operation is pretty quick. When done, press the back button as many times as necessary to get to the main CWM screen.

Step 3. Clear the cache. Some say this is optional for roms, but because ShoStock includes a new kernel too, I always do this. Same method ... highlight wipe cache partition. Press home to select. Scroll to confirmation and press home again to wipe. Then back to the main CWM screen.

Step 4. Install ZIP from SD card. Highlight and press home to select. Scroll to the ShoStock zip file which will be pretty far down if you have a lot of folders on your sd card. when you have that highlighted, press home to select and again confirm as before. Now you are installing the rom. This takes a while as it flashes a new modem, new kernel and then installs the rom. Let it run and be patient. When it is done, go back to the main CWM screen and reboot. The first time it boots it sits on the splash screen a while while it builds the files, so again, be patient.

Congrats, you've installed your custom rom. :D
