Root Help!! Flashing ROM using ROM Manager -- stuck

toasty

Android Enthusiast
Trying to flash my first ROM, using this guide. I follow the instructions, and after selecting the ROM, it flips to a white screen with three skateboarding androids at the bottom with an assortment of recovery/booting options. Absolutely nothing is happening. I know it says to be patient, but it doesn't look like the screen in the tutorial, and literally nothing seems to be happening at all.

Can anyone help a brother out?

welcome to your hboot screen :), says hboot 2.? and s-off? hit volume down once and then hit power to select RECOVERY, it will take you to your recovery where you can make BACK UPS and flash roms. I stress make BACK UPS :)

Thanks. I think I've averted disaster here by just navigating to reboot. Going to try this again, but I'm going to do it manually rather that relying upon ROM Manager.

Also you may want to read this has an after rooting section also with instructions to flash roms manually instead of using rom manager. Most of us suggest not using rom manager, but then again most of us suggest using amon ra recovery too...

Its no disaster thats the bootloader, i see it a couple times a day, its how I flash certain files and go to recovery sometimes after i put myself in a boot loop lol.

If you have the file on the top level (aka root) of your sd card, navigate to recovery. You can either select reboot and then recovery if your rom has the option. You can go to that bootloader screen and select recovery or you can vol up plus power to go there from a power off position.

Select backup/restore and make a nandroid back up now. After its done wipe everything using the options, and then select flash zip from sd card, find your zip and flash it

OK, new problem. When I first get to the bootloader, it will not let me navigate to "Recovery" when I hit Volume Down. It flashes to a screen where some text scrolls down for a split second, and then I'm back to the bootloader screen again, with my options as follows:

Fastboot
Recovery
Clear Storage
Simlock
HBoot USB

I can now navigate to "Recovery," but when I do and hit Power, it vibrates, shows me the HTC EVO screen, and gives me a different menu within the bootloader, as follows:

Bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
Power Down

What am I doing wrong here?

It should do all of that, except after you select recovery it should actually go to recovery.

Lets start at the top...how did you root your phone? Is your phone rooted? When in bootloader/hboot does it say s-off at the top?

I'm sure you understand now you have to wait a couple secs for your Evo to scan for a PC36IMG before you can toggle up or down...I've never heard of another menu looking like that after selecting "Recovery".

I appreciate the willingness to help. Rooted using unrevoked. Screen reads as follows:

Supersonic EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.02.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUNCH PANEL-ATMERLC03_16ac

I have seen that screen before, its the fastboot screen...im not sure why he is getting that screen after selecting recovery though...

Nor does selecting fastboot take you to the splash screen and back, just goes straight to fastboot. I will operate under the assumption he has a broken/missing recovery...

This could well be right. When that text scrolls by, I can't make it all out, but I am seeing something about a file missing. Anything I can do about this to remedy it?

There is an easy way and a slightly less easy way. I suggest the slightly less easy way. If you want details we can go into it.

The easy way is to go to rom manager and select flash latest recovery, or flash alternate recovery. This should work.

The slightly less easy way is to go here and download Amon Ra 2.3 or Clockwork 2.6.0.1 (amon ra is suggested). Place it on the top of your sd card and name it PC36IMG.zip EXACTLY not .zip.zip careful if the file extension is hidden. Then go to bootloader and it wil find the file and flash it, all you have to tell it is yes.

I do believe this worked. Looks like I expected it to look from the screenshots I'd seen. Thanks so much for the help, I really and truly appreciate it!

That file should be missing, its looking foor update files. That file wil always be missing unless you place a file in there that you would like it to flash. See my response above. When you name it pc36img that scan will find the file this time and ask you to update it.

I used ROM Manager, flashed an alternate recovery, and then flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery. After that, it let me do a backup. Having now been through the process, though, it looks like it just put my stock ROM back in place. Going back through now to install the ROM, we'll have to see how that works. Have a feeling I'm going to be using the slightly less easy way at some point in the near future, though.

Confused here...a back up basically takes a "picture", for lack of a better less technical term, of your current set up. That way if you ever break something you can restore that functional back up and save the day!

If you selected flash alternate recovery it would have given you some choices. Amon ra 2.2.2 i think, or cw 2.5, 3.0.0.x, 3.0.0.x, etc. You selected which one of those? At the top of rom manager where it says current recovery, what doe sit say?

None of those things happened, and it doesn't say current recovery at all. I think I'm basically starting over from scratch.

All of my apps from my previous set up are gone, by the way. I assumed that would happen, but maybe not? Is that right?

previous set up? You flashed a rom? Yes they will be gone...we back them up using titanium back up and then restore them after a flash.

When you go into recovery what version does it say? Mine says Amon Ra 2.3 at the bottom your should say clockwork recovery 2.5.0.7 or something at the top or Amon ra something at the bottom...?

RA-supersonic-v2.3 (went ahead and did the slightly less easy thing)

Thanks again for the assistance. I'm going to be offline for a while, will revisit this later tonight when I'm back in front of a computer...

And thats why rom manager wont tell you anything anymore. You do everything manually now. Rom manager is basically a "front" program for clockwork mod recovery. Get familiar with Amon Ra recovery, rom manager is sometimes buggy and we dont suggest using it, cant with amon ra anyhow.

yeah, ended up scrapping the idea of doing it with ROM Manager, and managed to get it figured out while at the Cardinals game tonight. Not real sure exactly what I did differently, but I tinkered around with it until I was comfortable with it and got it sorted. Running VirusROM at the moment, totally digging it so far.

Thanks again for helping to shepherd me through it!
