Root Help hopefully......

Same here. My mind only comprehends the obvious. Somehow I just keep thinking about my PC and how I can back up something to a folder and when I start to back up again it can keep what is already there and just add what it doesn't have. I think I foresee a horrible fate for my Evo when I upgrade lol. I got a very bad feeling that I will teach myself what I can and can't do with a phone the same way I did about a PC.

I felt I had to share this....quote from one of JamieG71's posts on xda...he is a developer and I read this post, 2nd paragraph and I looked like this:

I think I will have to wait on learning anything because I can't even clean my phone between Roms. This is really beginning to get annoying and is probably why I have problems with some I flash. Let me try again to explain and then hopefully someone can tell me where I am failing:

One of the first roms I loaded was cm7. I didn't keep it long as I was just checking through and had my mind on seeing as many as I could before I chose a daily driver. The only thing I ever added was some pics to check out the Gallery. Just a few minutes ago I had made my mind up to flash it and flash either ICS or JB over it to see what would happen. Guess what! It loaded every pic I had loaded then. Now my phone has had Superwipe ran like a million times along with the Recoveries wipe actions being ran just as many. My SDCard has been completely formatted like a dozen times because some roms need a partition while others do not. So far I have done nothing to remove the stored information about every rom I have loaded and as I load them back it loads ALL the information about the prior install other than the Apps of course. So where is this information stored and how do I delete it? It reminds me of how my PC makes a System Recovery Point when I install things in case I need to roll backwards but at least I know enough to be able to find and delete those files. Where are these files stored on my phone?

Edit: Let me say that I have used AmonRa,ClockworkMod and Smelkus Recoveries. Also I just formatted my SDCard and just as I thought those Pics are right back on my SDCard again.

Do you format your sd card via recovery?
And do you wipe the sd-ext also?
Do wipe system, boot, data, cache, dalvik cache, sd-ext, android-secure? Basically everything except sd card...

I got irritated and wiped everything the recovery would allow me to wipe 4 times including the SDCard and had to use the USB action in recovery to add a rom back. I can't seem to find any option given that I haven't wiped multiple times. Normally when I go rom to rom I wipe every available thing in Recovery and use USB to add the new rom to the sd so I can flash it.

Also, yes I have formatted my sd multiple times via recovery but on multiple occasions trying to delete the info I have used my PC.

Well, now I am officially stumped! You wiped until your phone was dust:p and your photos and some info from previous roms/installs come back???????????????
I, I, I, I,.....just..don't...know...what...to...say..
One would think a complete sd card format, a complete wipe 4 times of EVERYTHING, then a fresh rom install would bring back a clean phone.

Not for mine unfortunately. I don't know of anything else I can do.

Except..........

What is the propriotary os? Any way to cleanse it?

recovery restore/backup (options) Nand Backup,Nand Restore,Nand Restore ClockworkMod Backup,Backup Google Proprietary System Files,Restore Google Proprietary System Files

Just to confirm
You're clean flashing ROMs right, not from a nandroid?
When you do this, prior to flashing you wipe all, factory reset, format all, superwipe if you're using smelkus?
Even after doing all this you still get data from a previous ROM?

What data is it exactly that isn't removed? I got a bit confused!

Yes I am clean flashing. No NAND flashes at all. The only NAND I have ever made is of my original OS.

Everything is returned except Apps. Bookmarks,Pics and once I reinstall an App it automatically sets them how I had them prior.

Now I can see you roll your eyes at me when you see my next question;) lol but,
You do wipe the sd-ext also correct?

I think that when you restore apps from the store Google backs up data remotely so that it pushes data back? Could be me being crazy though. Also a lot of apps create data folders in your ur storage so that could be another reason.

I'm still a bit confused as to what everything is except the things you mentioned?

Sorry it took so long to get back. Between work and I think I got a touch of pneumonia it has been rough.

Everything = It restores all my contacts, bookmarks, app settings, what things I have running such as WiMax or GPS and such. It remembers what I had on my sdcard like pics and the Gallery will just load them back even if I clean install with nothing on my sd except the rom I am flashing it just remembers.

Note: I do not use Google to back up anything. I don't trust them that much. I keep all my info either stored on my pc or backed up through my carrier. Maybe even though I say no to using Google to back up my phone it does anyways. I don't know how to find that out. The only reason I have a Google account is for G+ so I know very little about them.

Edit: Yes i wipe my sd-ext. I don't have my sd partitioned unless a rom calls for it so normally I remove it and use my PC to format it back to 8gig. I also do a wipe where it says clear storage.

That is weird then. I can't think of anything other than some sort of remote back up:confused:
I'm not to informed on sd-cards, is there a possibility that its not being wiped properly by your pc??
Do you use the recovery to wipe it?

Yes. Since this has been noticed I have started wiping my phone via Recovery/Wipe in all fields available 3x then I am running Superwipe 7x yet it doesn't rid my phone of old information. I also run Clear Storage 3x before I enter Recovery/Wipe just to add to the cleaning. I am personally at a loss. I do however think that problem is directly tied to my inability to flash some roms. swiperrat being one of them. There are also some Sense Roms that will allow me to flash then everything start Force Close upon first boot.

So, I've been thinking about this whole issue here, and just throwing this out there to anyone reading, could she have bad memory blocks on her phone?
Just a refresher course here and correct me if I'm wrong.
1. You formatted sd card via recovery.
2. You transferred rom of choice to sd card.
3. You wiped EVERYTHING 10 thousand :) times including sd-ext blah blah blah
4. You flash rom.
5. Then, whammo! your apps and settings come back like you had them before.
without signing into google or anything?

The reason I suggest the memory block thing is, I wonder if some memory in the phone is not allowing access when wiping.

If she looks at the recovery log it'll tell you about any bad blocks it runs into

However, from what I'm reading in these last few posts this is all being restored from Google servers. Im nearly 100% positive.

Are you sure during setup you're not checking the box that allows it?

Correct and correct to the both. I do not use Google for anything other than G+. I use Total Equipment Protection furnished by Sprint to handle contacts because every phone I purchase my contacts restore to immediately no matter what OS.

As for the logs I have no idea even how to check that information. Just in case this is my problem is there a way of regaining the use of the space? Like when you set your PC to scan for bad sectors and repair them.

Just on a personal note it would be he not she :D! No need to apologize. Is an honest mistake.

Just to note that it is rom dependent on what restores also. like energy rom only restores the bookmarks for my mmo's. Was all I did when I first flashed it to check the speed. AlterRom will have all my settings for my apps when I reinstall them. not any bookmarks though. Infinity GTS will immediately start downloading all my apps when reflashed. It is really like there is an image of each and every rom still being saved.

Questions though....Anyway I can do a cleaning via USB? If I can is there a way to flash a clean image or whatever it is also via USB? I have used AmonRa and now using Smelkus recoveries. I couple that with ZZZZSuperwipe. Is there another I can try that may have better success?

Ok...if this is being restored from Google servers how do I find out and change it? Also wouldn't I need to be signed in for that to happen?

Can you disable that temporarily somehow?

Dont really know about that one!

oops, Sorry there..most of the time I assume males are in here but your username reminds me of Karen...my bad:o

Could be related to Total Equipment Protection app?

Not that I know of

I would think you also would need to be signed into google

T.E.P. only handles Contacts. The reason I use it is not only having all my contacts saved but it also allows me access if my phone were to come up missing. I can use it to either lock or destroy my phone via any web browser. It is basically a security system for my phone.

I am not familiar with Google. How would I go about seeing what information is being saved about my phone?

The thing is, if you've never signed into google with your phone across roms, I dont see how google could sync anything to your phone much less app settings etc.
I use google. When I flash a new rom, its like a new phone out of the box with my rom of course...nothing of mine that was on the phone is there....I wiped it all.
Now, I sign into google and all my contacts sync and email sync's.
Apps do not auto sync (install on their own). I have to manually install them (other methods excluded) but google knows what apps I have previously installed...they are on my google account.
Do you have a gmail account?

Yes. It is the one I created for G+.

I am leaning more towards the info being stored either on my sd or phone. I just ran error checking on my sd and it says there are no bad sectors but who knows how well Windows will check it. So that leaves me leaning more towards the info being on my phone somewhere that I have not been able to erase yet.

Yeah, at this moment, that's all I can think of, is something on the phone, but I....just....don't....know.....where?!
fwiw, if you wanted to see what is stored on your google account, login to your account and go to "dashboard"...(accounts/products/dashboard)...
