Root Help, I can't boot into recovery!

When I try to boot into recovery it goes right to the HTC EVO 4G white screen and just stays there.

Any ideas what to do?

Would flashing an alternate recovery in ROM Manager work? Or the All ClockworkMod Recoveries?

Help!! :(

Power off. When phone is fully off, press power and volume-down at the same time. Keep them held down until you see the white bootloader screen appear. It will scan for some files and then show you a menu. Scroll down to "recovery" with the volume-down button. Press power to select it.

Now you should see the Evo white splash screen. After a short wait, you should be in recovery. If it stays on the white splash screen, it sounds like your recovery image is bad. Assuming you have the engineering bootloader, you can use fastboot to flash a recovery image manually. But first, let's see if you can get to recovery with the method above (instead of from ROM manager).

First, thanks for helping me out.

Did the first step you mentioned. I waited at the Evo white splash screen for 5 minutes.

Recovery image bad?

If so, how do I use fastboot to flash a revovery image manually?
 
Before we do things the hard way, let's try the easy way. Go back to ROM Manager and install clockworkmod 2.5.0.0 (under all clockworkmod recoveries or something like that). Then install the most current one again. Then try booting into recovery from ROM Manager. If you're still stuck on the white evo splash screen, proceed to do things the hard way below.




First thing to verify is that you have the engineering bootloader.

Power off your phone. Then hold power and volume-down until the bootloader appears. On this screen, you should see:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.76.2000 (PC3610000)
...
...

If you don't have that 0.76.2000 version, then you don't have the engineering bootloader and you will need to re-root your phone with a full-root method. If you DO have the engineering bootloader, then you should be all set to proceed.

Plug in your phone to your computer with the usb cable. It should already be highlighted on FASTBOOT, so press power to select it. Verify that the red highlighted text says FASTBOOT USB. Put the phone aside. You'll do the rest from your computer.

Do you have the Android SDK installed? If not, you need that installed. If you do, then go to the tools directory. There you will find adb and the fastboot executables. From that directory in a DOS (cmd.exe) window, execute the following command:

fastboot flash recovery your-custom-recovery-image.img

You will have to search for a recovery image to use. I have a backup copy of clockworkmod 2.5.0.1 in my sdcard in case shit ever hit the fan. I would flash any version of any custom recovery you can find, just to have a working recovery. If someone could point out a link to the latest clockworkmod, that'd be much appreciated.
 
ROM Manager didn't work.


I have version 0.76.2000.

I DL'd Android SDK (they have a version for Mac which I'm using)

Under tools-adb this is what see.


adb reboot [bootloader|recovery] - reboots the device, optionally into the bootloader or recovery program
adb reboot-bootloader - reboots the device into the bootloader
adb root - restarts the adbd daemon with root permissions
adb usb - restarts the adbd daemon listening on USB
adb tcpip <port> - restarts the adbd daemon listening on TCP on the specified port

Now I have no idea on how to initiate a command or search for an image!?

Please advise how to continue.

If you're still having trouble doing things from ROM Manager, uninstall it and reinstall. My full root was in a weird state because I think I did what you did: full root, then flashed a recovery with unrevoked. It was like a 2.5.0.1 beta at the time, and ROM Manager didn't like it.

Do you really need 0.76.2000 (nand unlocked) ?

For some reason I have 0.79.0000 on my phone and I have been flashing ROMs no problem.

Those instructions were for flashing a recovery image. The OP's recovery image was corrupt. And you can't flash roms without a good recovery image. And you can't flash a recovery without the engineering bootloader or NAND unlocked.

The OP was ultimately able to use unrevoked to temporarily unlock NAND and flash a recovery image.

I just used ROM Manager, Backup

I am stuck at the white screen, htc EVO screen.

Do these instructions still apply?

I wanted to do the back up and then try flashing a custom ROM. I just rooted last night.
 
I think this just saved my a$$. I was stuck on the white screen too. I did the

and now it appears to be making a nandroid which is what I wanted to do.

There have been so many changes, and so many threads don't appear to apply anymore, I just wasn't sure. Its confusing because some people use a manual method while others refer to the rom manger app method. I tried the manual method and still got the white screen stuck. After I went to a different version of Clockwork, then back to the current version it seems to be working.

I knew/know enough to NOT flash a custom rom without a nandroid, and I couldn't get there.
