Root Help Installing a Custom ROM on LG Esteem

Hi everyone :),

So I have been lurking the web trying to find more information about these custom ROMs. I have read the guides on here and some other posts about it but I still cannot seem to understand what to do or how to do anything. I even tried to YouTube some videos on it but haven't gotten anything that would help me... I mean I understand the general idea but I still need to be baby feed in regards to the steps that need to be done to acheive installing a custom ROM.

I gather that I need to install some programs to my computer, install ClockWorkMod Recovery on my phone but it needs to be compatible with my phone? Have to back if it, using this recovery app or titanium backup? Then I have to clear my data/cache? ...Huh?

I figured I would ask a pack of questions to figure out what the heck I am doing before I attempt anything. I felt like the instructions for Root was pretty simple and do-able but I don't feel the same about the ROMs. :(

Any help with this would be greatly appreciate and sorry for sounding so unexperienced, cause well, I am! lol :o

Any additional information you may need to help me:
Phone: MetroPCS LG Esteem
SW Version: M910ZVB
Rooted: Yes
Android Version: 2.3.4

Thank you again for your help and patience in advance.

I'll try to help best I can, for starters you shouldn't need to install anything on your computer, and you'll need to be rooted. Being rooted us like having admin privileges on a computer

I believe ROM manager has the recovery for our phone now, so download that app from the Android market and choose to flash the esteem's recovery

In the recovery (CWM) this is where you make your backups. You make a chippy of your phone exactly as it is, so apps, contacts, accounts, everything is saved.

ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP

This should be the first thing you do, because if you have a problem with any of the custom roms, you have that backup to go back to
Its perfectly fine to ask for help, that's what this community is for. Help each other out for now, and then sneak in and destroy each others phones

Hi! Thanks for the response.
Well I hope that we aren't going to destroy my phone lol.
Okay, well I was told I should re-root my phone using the ZVB Root, I was trying to do that but it wasn't working. It was stuck on [waiting for device]
My phone is already rooted, but I was told to re-root it. Would I be fine to just download:

1) ROM Manager
2) MyBackUp Root
3) Root Booter

Or should I try to re-root with the ZVB Root here?

If your phone was already rooted, I don't see why you would have to reroot it.
ROM Manager will help put CWM Recovery on your phone, the other 2 I've never used

Only use CWM.

Make a backup.
Download ROM.
Transfer to phone memory or SDCard.
Boot into CWM/Recovery.
Wipe Data, Dalvik, Cache.
Instal ROM from internal or SDCARD.
Wait.

Enjoy. :D

It was said to reroot so that I may have CWM available?

Okay, sorry but this is just going over my head right now lol.
I downloaded ROM Manager. I opened it and see a bunch of options. What are the steps to do within this program? Ex.
-> Back up Current ROM
Once that is complete
-> Flash ClockworkMod Recovery? (Is this is the same as wiping data?)
...Then?

I already have the GingerEsteem downloaded and loaded to my SD card. :)
I just need to be baby spooned the instructions lol. when you break it down so fast for me I get confused =( I am so noobie =(

You need to back up your rom in CWM. Do everything inside of CWM.

You need to flash the recovery before you can make a backup, flash clockwork mod recovery, choose lg esteem, and it will install the recovery for you

So I was able to install a custom ROM.
Yay! ^.^
Problem now is, I cannot download anything from the Android Market because it says that my device is incompatible with everything...?
And the phone dialer screen is not aligned right?
I can't find the calendar widget for google calendar either?
And how do I stop the box at the bottom from disappearing ?? =\
Maybe I just need to get used to it but it is surely confusing!

Sounds like your lcd density was changed. I've never had this problem myself, but i'm pretty sure ldrifta, the man who made the ldk-ick ROM for those that were
I use that ROM as well, no problems at all and it looks sweet as all hell

Which rom are you using? The Gingersteem or the LDK ROM?
I am thinking of going with the LDK ROM. Might do it tomorrow. Sounds like it's pretty good. Looks nice too. Are you having any trouble downloading apps from the market with this ROM? I am with the Gingersteem.

I use LDK, and no problems. There are small issues here and there but ldrifta is always working on fixing them

I tried changing the LCD Density to help with the Market issue but that didn't work.
I will try to get the LDK ROM on tomorrow when I get a chance in the evening. Hopefully I will like it better. I am definitely enjoying the performance on the Gingersteem Extreme though. Everything is a lot quicker! :)

When he makes changes to the Rom, do you need to reinstall the Rom again? How do updates work?

Did you change the lcd to 240? I had the same problem. But IMO the screen loos better at 240 anyways :P

Anytime there is an update you will transfer the new zip and wipe everything except data and install. If you are changing ROMS, then do a FRESH install and add wipe data to the list of wipe cache and dalvik.

Gotcha.

Make sure you reboot when you change the lCD too or it wont work.

You mean to reboot through the power button or reboot through ToolBox?
Cause I rebooted from the power button..?

As far as density, after you change it go to setting, market, wipe data then reboot.. Should fix it then (haven't had the issue yet but if memory serves correct that's how its done)

As far as ROM updates go, yes you have to reflash.. But if I'm not mistaken (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) if you are updating the same ROM you just have to clear cache and davlik then flash.. But ALWAYS make a backup..

+1 wipe the data out of the market after changing it and all will be good ;)
