Root Help me root

I am trying to root my evo 4g but when I go to my boot screen I have hboot 2.18 s-on but at the top it says *unlocked* on every tutorial I hear it should say,"locked" what does this mean and what do I do? Thank you for any assistance.

Welcome to AF!!
You may well be rooted already.
Look in your app drawer for superuser.
Also, do you have a custom recovery? If you dont know,
go into menu/settings/applications and make sure fastboot is unchecked,
then power down phone.
Wait a few seconds, then while holding the volume down button, press power until phone boots up.
That will bring you to your bootloader screen which an option there is recovery....select that and let us know what comes up:)

o.k...see this guide....click on "show" of the htcdev method which you can skip as you are unlocked already and scroll down to the "how to get recovery" section and follow the instructions there to install a custom recovery.
Then the next section on how to flash su or flash custom rom...:)

first off considering i do not know how my bootloader became unlocked, i did not have the "android" file on my sd root, so i created it and put in the files listed in the thread. I then tried the adb method and in steps 3 and 4 it tells me to select fastboot and then do whatever to the file but i cant beacuse when i select fast boot my computer disconnects with my phone and the viewing folders dissappear

same with the android flasher method, i downloaded the needed files, but when i go to flash it (i assume to have my phone on hboot and selecte fastboot) then i check the box "im already in fastboot" and then hit flash it says it isnt connected to my phone.

i had my evo rooted before and used unrevoked and it was so easy. then my phone broke and when i got the new phone it was version 2.3.5 which i could not use with unrevoked. :(

the android folder has to be on the computer and not on your card. you need the three adb files plus the boot.img from the recovery file in the folder. again it is not on the sd card. you need to open the command window from the android folder. the easiest way, especially if you have windows 7, is to press shift while right clicking on the android folder and select the open command window here option.
