Help me with Battery

I was having the same issues as everyone here. I had the screen set to minimum, had WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth off. I was still only getting 10-11 hours a day... with 25 minutes total talk time, and about 5-10 minutes browsing the web. I found out what was draining the battery so quickly, though...

Even though I would disable AutoSync through the Power Management widget, it still leaves "Background Data Transfers" on. At first, I thought it was The Weather Channel app that was raining my battery so quickly, so I disabled that. I tested it again, and used Advanced Task Killer to find out which app was responsible. Unfortunately, it seems like Gmail and the Gmail calendar are constantly syncing while the user is AFK. That's why my 25 minute phone call, 10 minutes of browsing, and 4 hours of AFK left me with a 40% battery. At hour 10-11, it would die.

I disabled this last night, and left my IM client on. The results? I woke up in the morning - 6.5 hours after I unplugged it - with a 90% battery. I just hit the Auto-Sync button on the widget again, and got my e-mails within a few seconds.

It kind of sucks, because the Gmail app does not give you an option of the frequency at which it syncs. Maybe this will be updated soon.

That is very interesting. i have the sync of my Gmail disabled but i noticed that it was constantly truning on gmail and the gmail calander even tho i did nto ask it or want it to sync. I disabled background data now, and i will see what my results look like for tomorrow. My question is, why does my corp calander, gmail calander, and both mail programs keep running even tho i dont want them to. I will end all processed using advanced task manager and for some reason, both calanders and both email programs gmail and the other email, both boot up. and will run in the background. It kinda stinks because the market needs background date to be running, but it does stink that these apps check so much, and even when i have the sync of the gmail account off, it seems to still launch the app in the background. very interesting. And i have the brightness down on my screen. i just hope that i can leave automatic sync on,. so i can get my emails through out the day, i dont really need gmail but i would like to get my other email throughout the day. I guess this could be the culprit of killing my battery, but with i phone like this i guess my hope was to leave email on as that was the big reason for me getting the phone. Any other people have email on all day, and notice a much worse battery life? are all the people getting a day and a half out of the phone turning off background data?

And what is google talk storage? its ALWAYS RUNNING. And i dont know what it is and why it wont go away. Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ive had what i expected as far as battery life, coming from an iphone to this, the battery life is similar. Of course you have to do the typical things most iphone users already know. Disable wifi, bluetooth, low brightness set your mail to check every 30 min or more instead of 15. These are things you need to do with the droid or any smartphone for that matter with the added step of shutting down apps with a taskiller when ur not using the phone. And lets factor in that we have our new toys and have been playing around with them alot more than normal. If this is your first smartphone im sure your shocked at the battery life, but this is just how smartphones are. Hey look at it this way, at least you can buy extra batteries unlike iphone users. :p

Having the same problem. I returned my phone for a new one today. The battery was horrible. I dont have many app and I turned off all auto-sync. Hopefully the new phone will work out better. I just want to get through 1 day on a charge.

Im curious on that one as well ^^ because i know the market requires background data to be active in order for it to work. Meaning it nees to be able to download the apps you want in the background. Does turning off background data make sure apps are not doing anything when they are closed out of? Just curious as i dont kwow exactly what all the settings do yet but i am looking to just see where all my power is going. Thanks for the help.

What exactly is the difference between the background data and the auto sync options?

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that Background Data allows any of the apps to connect to the internet to complete whatever their programming tells them to complete. For instance, using the Market app requires that Background Data be enabled before users can access it. It seems like the Browser and other apps used a separate connection though, because the browser and other "on-demand" apps can access the internet with Background Data disabled.

The Auto-Sync app seems more relevant to apps that are programmed for it. For example, having the Auto-Sync enabled would set an "On" flag, and programs that are designed to properly accept that flag would then be allowed to sync (i.e., Gmail, Calander, etc.). Having the Auto-Sync disabled would set an "Off" flag, telling properly-coded apps that they cannot use the Background Data connection to sync.

So then my question would be. The people that are getting about a day and a half out of their battery....do you have auto sync, and background data on or off? That could be the key to getting the really long battery life that is supposed to be had out of the device but i am not sure. If anyone getting good battery life can chime in and let us know what they have set for background data that would be great. Thanks!

Well, I can get through a day with maybe 30% charge left. I have both my background data and auto sync turned ON. I am syncing only two accounts though, my Gmail and Facebook.

I do have screen brightness set to auto. Wifi, BT, and GPS all disabled.

I am having the same bad battery performance issues. I watched that battery video on phandroid and there is no way I would get that performance. I have tried all different suggestions with little success.

Has anyone swapped for a new Droid and seen improved battery life. Also, would just swapping the battery work? I can't imagine that it is a hardware defect in just some units.

well last night i had 1 day, 13 hours from last charge and was at 20% battery life. Not too shabby.

Regarding the battery charging quickly, mine went from 15% when i finally charged it to 90% in about 1.5 hours, so it seems like they do charge very fast.

they charge fast on the wall outlet. but usb from your laptop provides far less power, for example, so that will charge your phone far slower.

Does it really make a difference to charge it up fully and drain the battery all the way when you first get it? I didn't really do any of that when i got it
