Help HELP. My computer doesn't recognize EPIC. How To mount? Drivers? Don't FREAK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've recently encountered the same sort of problems when attempting to transfer files from the pc to the phone. It had been working fine for several months and the starting flaking out the past couple of weeks. Sometimes Windows will recognize the phone's SD card, the file transfer will start and the abend with a Windows error. Other times, the pc won't recognize the SD card at all. USB debugging is not selected and I've got the USB cable connected into a powered USB port on the pc. I'll have to try it out on a different pc to see if that makes any difference (and to see if it's a Windows issue). In the interim, I'll probably get a card reader/writer for the Micro SD card.
 
Hi all. Before the froyo 2.2 update everything worked right including mass storage. After, it no longer does. It would always show up and I'd be able to transfer files.

I've installed & uninstalled the drivers over & over (from the Samsung website) and even though the device manager sees it (ports), it does NOT show up under my computer (like a flash drive would). I tried the below procedure, step 3 didn't work. Didn't detect the drivers. Proceeded to following steps & installed Samsung software, didn't work. Debugging doesn't work.

I also was at the sprint store with the representatives using their cable with my computer and their computer (which has the corporate software pushed to it) and they weren't able to solve the issue. They were baffled. Odd, because they were able to service the phone and install the software update using the cable (rather than the over the air update package which is more buggy)

Any recommendations? Anyone find something that worked?

I was encountering a similar problem earlier today on Win7 64bit. If I remember correctly the following was my procedure that ended up working:

1. Go to Samsung folder in program files and run the uninstall
2. Go Control Panel > add/remove programs and uninstall the samsung drivers from there (I still had a listing even after using the uninstall from the samsung folder above in 1.)
3. Turn OFF usb debugging on phone and connect to the computer. My computer registered the device and successfully loaded the drivers for it.
4. Unplug usb from the phone and install the samsung drivers
5. Enable usb debugging on the phone and plug it into the computer. It immediately detected and installed the drivers for 3 of the 4 listed, the CDC or CMC or whatever it was called never listed as loaded, but didn't seem to affect anything.
6. Load up the command prompt and try adb shell like normal

Hopefully that helps. I think it may have been having multiple installations of the drivers on the computer that was causing the problems. No amount of pointing the device to the drivers would make them work. Uninstalling them all and reinstalling via the above steps seemed to let it automatically set everything up.

Edit: The above is what I did to get to a point where I could actually adb to the phone to root it. It also had the side effect of properly configuring the computer/device to allow file transfers when not in usb debugging mode. If you only want to transfer files, make sure you are NOT in usb debugging mode.

I tried all 3 ports on my computer. Nothing. Shows up in ports, successfully installs all drivers, but doesn't show up under computer (like a flash drive would).

It worked before the froyo update without fail. I now hate samsung. They ruined the phone and their service is crap.

I am a Unix System Admin and I would have never figured out that the EPIC needs a full USB connection to the Motherboard. It will only work on the rear USB ports. I don't even think you need to download the drivers. This should be in the Sprint manual. But thanks to all my Droid peeps for the hookup. It works perfectly on the rear USB ports.

Oddly enough try turning usb debugging on. This is a random quirk of the ec05. I have seen people use it with and without debugging turned on. If it shows the drivers are installed, i would suggest even though you used their cable, another cable that is NOT samsung, blackberry and htc's work very well as well as lots of after markets. Another thing to try would be after trying to connect and it fails is to reboot both computer and phone and see if that helps. Good luck, been down this road myself in the past.

Sorry man. I reread your previous posts and overlooked something last night. One thing that sticks out and baffles me is why if at the store they were replicate the issue why they didnt replace your phone right there? I would take it back there and ask for another phone. I can understand on one computer having issues or with stock cable (they are complete junk, well noted on this and multiple forums) but for them to to replicate it and do nothing but send you on your merry way is inexcusable. Unless i missed something else in your post's or if there is more to the story thats what i would do. Best of luck to you :-)
 
I racked my brain with this one. I finally got Sprint to send me a new phone...that didn't work. The computer would see the device but I couldn't access it. I got a new SD card and cable and now it works. I think what's happening is the SD card is becoming corrupted somehow. VIA an update or phone use. I hope this helps someone.

When I finally got to this part of the forum, I was thinking to myself that "I have worked with computers for how long and didnt think of this?" Lol, worked instantly with just putting it into another USB port.
 
changing the settings from "ask me on connect" to "usb only" er whatever did the trick for me. windows 7 wouldn't even recognized it was plugged in until then.
 
I tried pluggin my phone into the USB hub on my keybd and it worked. it was usb 1.0 but at least I could see it.
 
Try these steps.

This has always worked for me.

List of the drivers that I needed to install:

  • SAMSUNG Android USB Modem

  • USB Mass Storage Device (automatically installed by my computer)
  • and for some reason, under Portable Devices I have H:\, but my computer automatically installed that one.

The Samsung cable isn't the best, but it does work fine for file transfers. Remember, once the phone is connected, in the notification pane, tap USB connected, then tap Connect USB Storage, to allow USB data transfers.
 
if your tried a new usb cord and check your setting and updated drivers although windows usually update for and your finally frustrated as hell try this...
lets manually set the usb for storage because it might not be registering specially if your phone is rooted....

plug your phone up to your computer and follow steps
open your phone dial-er now press ##8778# what should come up as soon as you press #

:confused: I've done everything listed here. I've done with and without USB debugging (also with and without mock locations and screen never timeout and every combination thereof); without drivers; with drivers; with repaired drivers; uninstalled drivers; rebooted phone and computer; reinstalled drivers; re-rebooted; re-uninstalled drivers; re-rebooted; installed different drivers; got dizzy; drank some water; took a nap; grew a beard; used every single hub on the computer 30+ times (each); tried 5 different cords; called customer support 3 times; used my inside voice and said please and thank you; tried the sd card in an external sd adapter; crossed my fingers; toes, eyes, and alter-egos; did 100 hail marys; danced a raindance; spun around in circles clockwise 33 times; fell down; begged for death to take me; ate a jelly bean i found under the couch, got up, barfed, fell down again, got back up again, gnawed off my own eyebrows; beat mortal kombat on expert setting with each and every character in the roster; ate all 5 cords; buried my Epic in a hole in the front yard; waited 7 blue moons; dug it back up; dropped it in a bag of white rice; microwaved it; waited 3 days, and ate it. My stomach kinda hurts. :eek: Any suggestions?

I hate this phone.

Usb has worked countless times in the past, every single time. I've never had an issue until last night.

Now I plug in to my pc and it says usb device not recognized. I have changed nothing and it worked as recently as last week. I've restarted, plugged and unplugged etc. But nothing works. I'm using the samy usb cable too. Any ideas as to why it crapped out like this and how to get it working again.

This really screws me as I work on files on my pc then move them to my phone to share, since I don't have wifi. Thanks for your help.
 
Me too - this has not been working for me ever since Froyo. I've tried everything suggested that I could find on the Internet. Sad thing is that it worked before Froyo, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

All my computers quit recognizing the usb connection from my Samsung Epic 4G ever since a Sprint repair center reloaded the Gingerbread OS. I tried different computers, different cables (which all worked before), reboots, USB Debugging on & off, etc... Nothing worked.

Finally I come across davesr1980's recommendation and it worked immediately. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :D
 
Hi All,

I found out what was wrong. I tried the OEM cable and it worked. It found all drivers & update without issue. It turns out that the cables I was ordering which were supposed to be blackberry & meant for data transfer were garbage, hence all the issues. The samsung cable it came with worked without issue.
 
If you are having never ending trouble connecting your Epic to your computer for file sharing, make sure the debugging is disabled of course. THEN tap on the phone icon as if you're going to dial a number. Type in ##8778# it brings up your phone utilities. Under the USB section, make sure your phone is on PDA mode NOT Modem mode. Once you've selected that, you should have no problem connecting to your computer. I didn't find this info ANYWHERE on the net and even tech support didn't check for that. Luckily the tech at the store found that immediately. I hope this helps everyone who may still be having trouble. And thanks to the young lady at the store for her help!
