Root Help-New to rooting

Im new to rooting and just have a quick question. In the guide [FAQ-GUIDE] ClockWorkMod Optimus Elite it says Installing/Flashing the Custom ROM
  1. Verify that the MD5Sum is what it is supposed to be, in the way way you would for the Advanced Install method for CWM: In the Terminal Emulator, type busybox md5sum /path/to.file and hit Enter/Execute. If it matches, you're good to go.
IS this step required if i used giant prunes method? Im very new to rooting is there anything else i should know? I do not care if my data is lost and i have to start new but will i lose my root and CWM and busybox? I already made a backup. I am trying to install the sleipnir ROM.

Verifying the MD5Sum is always recommended. Why? Because it verifies that the data was all, completely, and correctly, written to the desired location :) Any difference in the MD5Sum indicates an error, and bad things can and will result/ensue. So, even though it takes a minute to do, always verify the MD5Sum if one is given - this is one of the best and one of the simplest ways to verify that data was written/saved/downloaded correctly, and didn't corrupt in-transit, before actually going to explore that written data. For CWM, if the MD5 is wrong, CWM is partially corrupted and will likely not function correctly, and if you flash a ROM with an MD5 that doesn't match then you could easily soft-brick your device. And on a side note: you mentioned Sleipnir - make sure that the version you intend to flash is appropriate to your carrier (e.g., if you have Virgin Mobile download and flash the Virgin Mobile version, and Sprint if you have Sprint). It says cant open "/path/to.file" : No such file or directory

You need to replace "/path/to.file" with the path and filename, such as: "/mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD/Sleipnir_v239V.zip"
 
busybox md5sum/mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD/Sleipnir_v239V.zip = applet not found :( what is the /mnt/ for?

If i enter /mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD/Sleipnir_v239V.zip = Permission denied.

it is not in the mnt folder just the /sdcard/_ExtrenalSD/Sleipnir_v239V.zip and still no applet found.
 
If you're already rooted and have Superuser installed, when you fire up the terminal emulator, first type in "su" without the quotes and hit enter/return. Your prompt should no longer be a $, but a #. That means you've given it root permissions, which is required to verify an MD5Sum. If you have an external SD card (that you actually opened the back of your phone and put in yourself), and the Sleipnir ROM is place in that location (not in any folders), then typing "busybox md5sum/mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD/Sleipnir_v239V.zip" without the quotes should yield the MD5 after a second or two of hitting enter/return. This process is detailed in the CWM FAQ-Guide, as well as an alternative if the ROM is located within the internal SD card instead :)

Also, if you're using your phone to download the ROM instead of a computer, do not use the stock (came-with-the-phone-out-of-the-box) browser to download the ROM, use a different browser such as Dolphin or Chrome, as the stock browser can't handle it.
 
Not found. I am using an external sd and I used the computer to download the rom.

You're on the stock ROM, correct? And rooted, and have Superuser or SuperSU (it's free and improved brother)?

Then, based on "applet not found," I'm going to guess you do not yet have BusyBox. Download and install BusyBox from the Play Store. Open BusyBox once it's been downloaded and installed, and tell it to do a Normal (not Smart) install. Then try verifying the MD5Sum :p

I've installed busybox and have done all the steps in your tutorial up to the flashing the rom.
 
What do you mean when you say stock rom? Also this picture shows I have busybox.

There should be a space between md5sum and the file location. I'd say Artine is right, though, reinstall busybox and see if that helps. Do a normal install from inside the busybox installer app, even if you've done it before just to be sure that everything is where it should be.

Well compare the md5sum that it generated to the one in the original post. If it's the same then you are good to go. Always be sure to make a nandroid backup tho in recovery before you flash the ROM :)

Nothing, you just need to re-download it either with a computer and transfer it to your phone via the charging cable, or download it directly with your phone using either Dolphin Browser or Google Chrome, but not the stock browser as it can't handle it properly (usually corrupts the data in-transit) :) If the MD5Sums do not match, it's because the data corrupted in-transit to your device receiving the data. Verifying the MD5 tells you whether or not the copy of the ROM you downloaded, is in fact, part-for-part, the ROM that was uploaded. If they match, you're good to go, if not, try downloading it again (and in the case of Sleipnir, make sure to read the installation instructions and also download the version of the ROM appropriate for your Carrier, if you have VM get the VM version, if you have Sprint get the Sprint version).

They matched up! Success!
Ahh i was looking at the new version's md5 and i have v239V thats why the md5 was wrong. So after just

  1. Make a Nandroid backup.
  2. Format /data once.
  3. Install Sleipnir_vxxxx.zip.
and thats it?
 
All the steps provided are all the ones needed, which is to be expected :)
Installing the ROM and rebooting are a part of those steps in the guide, so proceed to follow the rest of the steps :)
