Root HELP! Old Nand backup to new phone possible?

Hey guys.. I have searched for this elsewhere and think i have half the answer but i just want to see what all my friends on AF think. I have an EVO HW ver 0003 running EViO 1.8 on clockwork 3.0.0.5 baseband 2.15.00.09.01 HBOOT 0.76 Love everything about the phone and the way its set up. I am getting a replacement because my speaker sounds like its blown (but its not) because it goes from the earpiece to the speaker. I think something is rolling around in there but i am getting it replaced for 0 so screw it.

My question is can i backup on old phone and then just root and restore? i have read places that the Backup has the SN named on a few folders so you have to rename them but when i go into my backups only the 4g has SN. I have also read that 4g will break so you have to delete the 4g backup folder from the backup and they will not overwrite but i think the restore will fail due to "corrupt" data. Isnt that what the MD5 is for to ensure packet contents?

Anyone confirm or correct any of this ?

Also anyone see why i might not be able to get back exactly where i am. any new developments on new evos that prevent WiFi tethering etc? Or any reason why i should not get the replacement and just push for a repair. (the CSR's all have rooted evos so i dont have to worry bout them "telling") but was going to wipe and do an OTA update before returning

yeah i don't think you can. if you are going to try it, make sure that you use a nandroid backup with out any wimax keys backed up on it.

You'd need *at least* a nandroid backup without a wimax.img, as ocnbrze said, and the same hboot version. If you get a newer phone as a replacement, you're going to have a hard time getting back to hboot 0.76. If the phone is new enough to have the newer partition information, you shouldn't even attempt it. Beyond that, we usually always tell people not to try restoring backups from phone to phone. It might work, but like I said, don't even try if you can't get the eng bootloader on it.

can you upgrade your hboot without rerooting. If not then your in the same boat arn't you.

You're probably opening a can of worms by even trying this. Likely, it won't work very well, and you'd have been better off by not trying. For one, you probably have S-OFF via the eng bootloader. You'd have to reroot if you updated your hboot. Downgrading recovery is not a great idea. A better option is to use RA, which allows you to choose which partitions to backup. In any case, I don't recommend you even try this. There can be compatibility issues I'm sure I didn't think of. What I would do is backup all apps and app data with titanium backup, get the new phone, restore only the apps and app data I know I needed, and change all settings manually. Yes, it takes longer, but you'll be better off in the long run. You'd, of course, have to reroot and flash whatever ROM/kernel/mods you want, first.
