I have the latest express rom and was in the tweek menu this morning and the phone started the opening anitimation screen by it's self and that's where it is stuck. I can't power it off to get into recovery to try anything.

Have you tried doing a battery pull? After doing that reinsert the battery and power your Evo on while holding volume down. That will take you to your bootloader screen and you can get to recovery from there. Once in recovery wipe cache/dalvik cache and reboot.

I tried wiping just cache and then wiping and reloading the rom over it's self, but neither worked so I'll just try a new fresh install.

I didn't try the battery pull to start with because I had read somewhere not to and was a little reluctant.

I would've tried wiping again but both cache and dalvik cache, then rebooting.

A battery pull is completely fine to do except while flashing radio's. Let us know if the fresh install solves the issue.

The only time it's dangerous is during a radio flash. NEVER pull the battery during a radio flash. Any other time, it should be ok. Definitely ok when the phone is booted into your ROM and it freezes or glitches or something.

Sorry for the delay....work calls

The fresh install worked fine, but I was surprised by something. After the install and once on the main screen it started automatically loading all the apps that were missing and not part on the fresh installation. I hadn't seen that before and Titanium Backup had yet to be installed.

Sounds like data wasn't wiped prior to you re-flashing. In any case I'm glad the issue is resolved.

So that makes me ask how important it is to wipe sd-ext when flashing a new rom.

Many have never (and don't) wipe sd-ext between flashing ROM's and don't run into problems. I believe it's a formality at best. As a general rule of thumb, if your sd card is partitioned, you should wipe sd-ext prior to flashing a new ROM. You'll also want to make sure you select sd-ext when making a nand-backup as well.

I haven't partitioned my card....will that come back to bite me one day

if you have not partitioned your card then there is no sd ext for you so no need to wipe. once it is partitioned then you wil need to wipe it. ideally you should wipe once partitioned. and not wiping sd ext when flashing roms with a partitioned card will as long as you flash similar roms like sense 1.0 roms or sense 3.0 roms but not from sense 1.0 to sense 3.0 roms or from sense to asop roms those will not work as well. those kinds of scenarios you should wipe sd ext.

are you talking about automatic downloads from the market?

It's not a *must* but if you flash some of the bigger ROM's (ie: sense 3.0, 3.5), you'll want a partitioned sd card to get the most out of them. Otherwise you won't be able to have that many apps downloaded while on that particular ROM.
