I really want to root and upgrade my phone,
but i am quite terrified of messing it up. I cant afford to replace the phone if i brick it, but I am absolutely done with the lagging. I have read all the threads on rooting and upgrading, and I have some questions: :confused:
1.which rom is the best? (icarus, cm7, other that i dont know about?)
2.which is the easiest to install?
3.would anyone walk me through it over im or something?

I have been following this forum since i got my ascend in jan. I am somewhat computer savvy, but I feel like a punk when it comes to this stuff just because i am extremely attached to my phone.

Rooting is easy, google Z4Root (not avail in the market now more), once you get it installed just run it n click perm root. Then you need clockworkmod recovery/Rom Manager (2.5 for ICARUS and 3 for cm6 n 7). make a backup of your current ROM, dl the ROM u want to install, put it on the root of your sdcard, boot into cwmr, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, advanced/wipe devlic cache, then install zip from sdcard, when that finishes, install gapps for the particular ROM, advanced/fix permissions, reboot.

which is better? icarus or cm6?
how do you back up the current rom?
google z4root on my phone? or computer?

dl all needed file from a computer unless your doing cm6 or 7 and installing cwmr 3, it can be got from the market and then copy em to your sdcard. Once you get rom manager installed you can either open it n backup from there or reboot into recovery and backup from there.

oh and which is better really all depend on you. If you want/need mms then icarus. if you can live w/o mms def cm6.

uhm, i think ive got it.. do i have to buy titanium backup? or is the free version sufficient?

Dont sweat it. Just do this,

Pull the battery and wait a few minutes,

Press send, vol down, power for cwmr 2.5 (ICARUS) n send, vol up, power for cwmr 3. this will boot you into cwmr.

From there:


  1. wipe data/factory reset
  2. wipe cache
  3. goto advance, wipe devlic cache
  4. back to main menu, install zip from sdcard
  5. select your zip
  6. confirm
  7. wait patiently
  8. install gapps, install zip from sdcard
  9. select gapps zip
  10. confirm
  11. wait patiently
  12. advance/fix permissions
  13. reboot system

thanks for that, lol i wished i would have gotten that before i did the flash to stock yadayada..
i messed up because i put the icarus zip on my sd card wrong,
i panicked and instead of trying to fix it just flashed to stock because i already had the files ready as my back up plan..
i think im going to leave my phone alone for a while haha

i agree. although pirating is nice and all devs (including me) spend months getting the apps to the point where we feel it's worth charging. i have been busting my ass to get one thing working on an app i don't even plan on marketing i'd hate to think of the work some devs put into the apps people like to "borrow"
 
And also the ones who should get a donation is isaac and pip even tho they didnt charge for this....
