The most useful thing would be to root. But that will void your warranty.

Keep your display brightness turned down will help with the battery. I charge mine every evening so battery has never been a big problem.

First off Gratz on the upgrade - next I hope you did not pay full price for the phone. If you did I suggest use it for like 10 days and go return it and get the Samsung Galaxy S3 when it comes out.

From there to answer your question - I personally think you should root the device - it voids the warranty but it can be reversed pretty easily so therefore you get your warranty back. Next get the full version of Titanium Backup (Pro) from the Play store and freeze all of the T-Mobile stupid apps. They are annoying and pointless and waste your data and did I mention pointless. The only T-Mobile app that I have is the my account one because I like to occasionally check my data usage making sure that I am not too greedy with that data because I like to have it all month long.

After that Juice Defender Ulitmate (paid version) Play Store app is a really good idea for battery saver - works and it uses smart settings to turn off the data of your phone when it is on stand by so it does not waste your battery. These two apps are very much worth the price and help out very nicely

Another option for battery & data savings, in settings under Accounts & Sync, uncheck Background Data.
