Root Help. Problem during root.

I decided to root my Incredible using Unrevoked3. Everything was going fine until the process stopped on "Rebooting into recovery." My phone is in Clockwork Recovery but nothing is happening. What should I do from here?

Kinda sounds like you're good. Maybe either make a backup or choose the "reboot to system" option if the clockwork menu is showing up. Is that the case?

I selected reboot and the phone started as normal. I have the superuser app. However, when I rebooted into HBOOT, it still says S-ON.

Wow, that's kind of strange. I wonder if you were to try a battery pull and then enter hboot using volume down + power if it would register s-off? Maybe a fluke that first time? Maybe it didn't quite get done somehow though.

I did have a SD card in the phone. I rooted using a Mac, if that makes a difference. I read a bunch of guides on the rooting process and followed the steps as they were written.

EDIT: I downloaded the wifi tether app and it works, so the phone is obviously rooted. I'd still like to know why it shows S-ON. I don't want it to be an issue should I choose to unroot.

If you choose to unroot, it will actually be less of an issue. If you're S-off, you must flash back to S-on in order to return the phone to a fully stock state in addition to the unrooting procedure which is a separate step.

The downside is you can't load unsigned zips if you wanted to (alternate radios, hboot, etc) and if you ever decided to do an official update, you could not be assured of re-obtaining root because you can't load an unsigned recovery, i.e. Unrevoked in zip format. You would then have to wait and hope that Unrevoked found a new root hole for the new official software as they ended up doing following the November OTA update. If you always stay rooted though and don't do any official updates, that portion of the equation becomes a non-issue.

So depending on what you want to do with your phone now and in the future, you may or may not need it. Up to you.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

I rooted to be able to backup all my apps with the associated data and market links, have occasional access to the wifi tether, and flash a senseless rom without all the bloatware. Since I don't like Sense and use Launcher Pro Plus with Widget Locker instead, I figure there's no point in having Sense run in the background. I had no plans to change anything else.

A few more questions:

1. If I understand correctly, S-OFF and root are not directly related. My phone is rooted, hence why I can use the wifi tether, but without S-OFF I don't have full access to the phone. Correct? Will I be able to do a full backup and flash roms without S-OFF?

2. Can I run Unrevoked3 again to get S-OFF, or will that screw things up? Is there another method?

3. As far as unrooting goes...let's say hypothetically I wanted to unroot right now, would I just have to do a factory restore to get rid of the Superuser app and Clockwork Recovery and erase all traces of root, or would I still have to use the PB31IMG.zip file? I'm assuming based on what you said that I wouldn't need to flash the S-ON tool since Unrevoked didn't turn S-ON off.

Thanks again. As you can tell I'm new at this. I read a bunch of guides and watched Youtube videos, but experience is always the best teacher.

S-OFF unlocks nand so it ups the ante regarding what you can do as a rooted user. You can still load Roms, do a nand backup and many other root activities without it though.

That's what I would probably try. We used to have to load the S-OFF tool separately until they integrated it into the root tool. You may still be able to load it seperately if all else fails...public:forever [RootWiki]
You can install zip from SD card > Choose zip on SD card in Clockwork. The file is still linked in the wiki if you scroll down to the installation portion of the page. Doesn't seem like you should have to do this though?

Not a factory restore. You would use either the RUU method via the PC or the PB31IMG method in hboot. You don't need S-OFF to do this because you are dealing with an official signed zip in the case of the PB31IMG. Again, S-OFF allows for the install of unofficial, unsigned zips.

Hope this helps.
