Root Help Rooting HTC EVO 4G with S-OFF already?

Hey everyone I decided I would like to root my phone since I don't have much longer until I can upgrade. However I according to my knowledge of rooting I have learned from the internet my phone evo 4g is running android 2.3.5 but when I go into my hboot it doesn't say locked at the top it says " Revolutionary Supersonic evt2-3 SHIP S-OFF HBOOT-6.16.1002 " and according to everything I've read it is rooted but I have never rooted my phone, I tried to use unrevoked to root it and I get an error saying my firmware is too new. PLEASE HELP!!!

Welcome danielbts11!!
Well, you are rooted my friend. Do you have an app called Superuser in your app drawer?
Do you know what rom version you are on?
If not, go to menu/settings/about phone and it will list the rom version (sometimes) in the "build".
Otherwise we can check another way:)
I would like to move this thread to the Evo 4g forums if you dont mind:)

My android version is 2.3.5
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.12.19
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.10-g94d0005

if any of that helps I can't find a rom version, I haven't even done anything to my phone root wise. And no i don't have super user, I haven't done anything to it beside run unrevoked and have it fail because my firmware is too new.

Well, I would then assume, that all you need do is either flash the superuser.zip and download the Superuser app (both need to be used together) to gain full root access.
Or, you can flash a rooted custom rom.
I think at this moment you are partially rooted but still on the stock, unrooted rom.
So, If you want to try a custom rom to flash we can provide a link for that, or, just enable the current rom you are on to be rooted. :)

If you flash a custom rom, you will have to set everything up again.
If you want your current rom to be rooted, all we need to do is flash the superuser .zip and download the app (the app will come from the Play Store.)

Now, one other question, sorry, we need to know what recovery you have.
That can be accessed thru the bootloader where you got all that other info you posted in your op. :)

Thanks for the help, I guess all I want to do is have full root access and flash a sweet rom.

If you flash a rom, it will come with the superuser.zip and the app already baked into it. No need to do that manually if you flash a custom rom:)
What recovery do you have?

I honestly have no clue what to do, I haven't even done anything with it except notice my phone is s-off

ok no problemo! You know how to get to the bootloader screen right? That was the screen where you got the info you posted in your first post. In that screen, highlight the word "recovery" and push the power button to choose it. The next screen that should come up is your recovery screen. Post back here all that it says. :)
You can reboot out of that screen...there will be an option for that.

I guess what I need to know is what to put on my phone and steps how to flash a rom
o.k....:)
We can get you that, but we would like to know what recovery you have, as that is where the rom is flashed (installed) from. :)

When I click recovery it goes to a picture of a phone with a down arrow and then goes to a picture of a phone with a hazard sign

curious did you buy the phone new? where did you get the phone?

so all you need to do is get a custom recovery and then you can flash a custom rom.

here is the guide you want:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

just skip the rooting process. there is tons of info in this guide. there is also a how to switch recoverues section that has the info on how to get recovery. also there is info on how to flash a rom as well.

good luck and keep the questions coming, if you have them.

I tried using that recovery it didn't work

ok what happened....it should work for your phone.

did you name the recovery correctly? what sd card co you have? did you get any errors? the more specfic you can be the better we can help.

edit:i just been
NINJA CHOPPED!!!!!

You have to be very certain that you didn't add an extra .zip to the end when renaming.
Also, make sure you didn't put it in any folder on the sd card.
What size card do you have?

Okay I got the recovery to work something was messed up with what the guide was saying with the file extensions, but anyways the recovery is working I just made back ups of everything and cleared everything I think, is there any other steps I should take before flashing a rom?
