Root help save a brick

Well it has been ten minutes and I am still on the splash screen. Should I attempt again?

Originally I had a big post answering all of the questions sequentially, but when trying to recreate I ran across the FAT32 suggestion and it appeared to work.

It has been on the splash screen for 14 minutes now.

Yeah, Scotty mentioned above that he's waited upwards of 20 minutes before.

I think it is safe to say something went wrong. I am downloading the MD5 Checksum and I have obtained a new copy of PB00IMG.ZIP from the link I sourced earlier to ensure I'm on the same page.

I really appreciate your help walking me through this.

Double-checking the MD5 is a very good idea. If would be instructive to know if you had a bad/short download of the original file you tried to flash, too (i.e., the one you just waited a while for).

You might want to check and post your HBOOT now just in case your bootloader actually got flashed (a good thing that also gives you more options, too).

I got the checksum here: MD5sums for Windows

I am not quite sure how to use it. I will try to figure it out.

It has been 31 minutes, still splashing. Should I wait longer? In order to give HBoot I would have to take out the battery.

...still the same. I will try my new download. Still sort of lost on how tho use md5.

Oh, I didn't realize you were still waiting on that one...I would say that's a little over the limit and I would go-ahead and pull the battery.

You might want to make sure you've got a good charge on your battery before re-proceeding with anything, just to make sure that subsequent tasks are adequately protected.

Also, the MD5sum app you've got is a nice little utility. I downloaded it, extracted the .exe to my desktop, and just dragged and dropped the PB00IMG.zip file onto the .exe shortcut and it launched and calculated the MD5 sum in the DOS window. Pretty sweet and effective.

Scotty, you still there?

hmm, yeah defaintely something is not right after 31 minutes. try it again, and then pay particular attention to what happens. you should get a blue bar, then a gold bar(IIRC),then be asked if you want to update, and youll have to push the tracball to tell it yes.

if all you saw was the blue bar, then unfortunately all it did was find the file and check it. if you saw no gold bar,or was asked to update,it did not like something within the file. its a good sign that it did find the file and check it however. :)

next step is definately to verify that you are using the correct, and uncorrupt root rom to try and flash.

if you do get a gold par, push yes to update, and get all the way thru, let us know if it says "update ok" and if not, what parts failed?

sorry if we werent a lil more clear on what you should see when the phone finds and unpacks a PB00IMG file. but dont worry, well figure it out :D

How do I use the MD5 sum? Do I download the file again and make sure the sum is the same for both files?

oh snap! i was too late with my typing  scary,i just got home, yall will have my full attention now :)

actually this is what id expect to see when you try and flash the root rom over top of the 1.49.000 bootloader :(

i think our options now are:
1)run the leak RUU
or
2) just run the leak PB00IMG, since he nows how to do that now.

what do you think,mister scary?

I never got a gold bar. I guess I was so excited I rebooted without noticing the glaring exclamation points telling me it failed :)

So I have md5sum I am going to try my new download but I suspect the file I'm using is older than what is on the phone (even though it is broken) and so it won't let me replace it.

go to this page:
[HTC ROMs] Consolidated HTC Eris RUU/OTA/ROM URLs - xda-developers

and look for this part:
[SIZE=+3]

[ 2.36.605.1 ] a.k.a. "Leak-V3" (or MR3/"Official" RUU) - (Eclair/2.1)
RUU: RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed _with_driver.exe

OTA: see item #10 below in OTA section

if you want to download the PB00IMG.zip for the v3 leak, you can apply it just as we tried to this one,and since this is the same version, you should not get the "main version higher" error

that is exactly correct. if you try and download the v3 leak above, hopefully it will flash successfully.

I was going to say the V3 2.1 leak, but I found the RUU and the v3 leak links back-to-back in bftb0's (eu1's) thread:

[HTC ROMs] Consolidated HTC Eris RUU/OTA/ROM URLs - xda-developers

13kyl, you can download either the MR3 RUU or the LeakV3 from the above page. Here's the file sizes and MD5 sums of those files:

[ 2.36.605.1 ] a.k.a. "Leak-V3" (or MR3/"Official" RUU) - (Eclair/2.1)

The v3 leak is probably easiest since its basically the same as what he's been doing.

The V3 leak is also a PB00IMG.zip file just like the base root ROM you've been using. You'll want to:

1. Download the above "LeakV3" file
2. Verify the file size and MD5 checksum (lemme know if you still have questions about how to use the MD5 utility you just downloaded)
3. Make sure you've still got a good charge on your Eris's battery
4. Rename or remove the current (base root ROM) PB00IMG.zip file that you have on your SD card and replace it with the LeakV3 file you just downloaded
5. Boot and install like you have been

Scotty, sound okay?

Scotty, you type too danged fast!

Not my fault I'm old(er)! :D  ;) :)

lol so we typed basically the same thing at the same time again? great minds think alike :D;):p

good call on the battery,i forgot to mention that. as hes found its not good to run out of juice in the middle of an hboot flash

I just got the file downloaded... I live out in the sticks.

md5sum checks out. File size checks out. Here I go.

this is what im hoping... maybe the old PB00IMG was still there and it found that first?

I did delete the old file. As a matter of fact I tried to run it without changing the file name and it didn't find anything. I had to take the card out and change the file name.

that being the case... the ruu youll basically just click on and run... it will tell you what to do. theres a video here that shows what it looks like:
