Help HELP-Tried Recovery Reboot, Red Triangle w Exclamation Mark on Phone Icon Screen!

RK3350

Lurker
I read the other threads (even with other phones) about this - do not apply..

Last night, I was changing my HTC EVO 4G's wallpaper (with Zedge app).
When finished, I hit Home button, it asked if I wanted to complete command with HTC Sense or GoLauncher. I accidentally hit HTC Sense.
(note- I do not like the native interface, so have downloaded and used GoLauncher from the market since I had the phone, with is 6 months now).

When it started to come back up in native format, I hit Home button again, trying to start it with GoLauncher. I admit I tried to do this too fast, and think I confused it. So, I did a soft reboot by removing battery.

All last night and today, the numerous soft reboots did not work.

It shows the htc EVO white page, the Sprint 4G logo page, then goes black, the swipe bar says "no service", but when the status bar icons (eventually) do come back on, I see there IS service, it even shows my alarm set. I called myself and was able to answer the call, then get the status bar drop down, as I saw it showed "Low on Space" icon and I figured that was part of the issue (I have a number of apps, that to my dismay, cannot be stored on card - I routinely run on 45-70 MB free).

I touched the "Low on Space" to try to manage and uninstall some apps that take up all the memory, but screen goes blank.

I did this a number of times, trying to get to different aspects of the OS, but the screen went blank/black.

I then found out about the hard reboot (online) and when presented with the options, attempted "Recovery".
It started its thing, then I got an icon of a phone with a green "sync" symbol, then that went away, and I got a phone icon with red triangle and exclamation mark!

What does it mean?

I am hesitant to reset to factory as I have some things stored on the phone that do not seem to be backed up in other areas (contacts, to-do tasks/notes in other apps, etc), plus just all the hassle of the re-do of EVERYTHING. ACK!

Can anyone say what this icon means?

Hesitant to go to Sprint store, cuz they will prob just hard reset it - I can do that myself if I HAVE to, seems I know more about stuff then they do, so I'm hoping all the insanely smart people on this forum can help....
;-)

Oh, Yes - this is not a phone that I "rooted" - it was completely stock, purchased from Sprint in mid-Sept 2011, not a refurbished phone either...

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so first off you are not rooted and do not have a custom recovery. the red exclamation point means that you have a stock recovery and do not have access to it.

so can you boot up and use the phone then? if not then you only option that i see is to do a factory reset.

Ok the low on space will hinder some things but not all things. First I would make sure to sync my contacts with google. However If unable to you should atleast back them up to the sdcard. I believe you can do this in the normal "People" app. I always consider my contacts most important. Most other stuff I can get back and that stuff I cant well then shame on me for not having a better backup plan.

A Factory reset will solve your issue but really its temporary fix. If you have tons of programs you need to start planning on one of two things.
1. Start living without some programs - This is the only solution for a non rooted phone. It sux and so does the company that makes a phone with such little memory (Yes I Love my HTC EVO and HTC for making it) :(
2. Root the Phone and really store apps on the sdcard. - This is the only solution for the person who will not be held back. It's totally awesome to sit back and put your fingers in a position that tells the world "Their Number 1" with the middle finger :p

However with both options you should have a solid backup of your important data. That way when the phone gives you that finger you can at least be comforted in knowing all was not lost and stick your tongue out back at it :D

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I had backed up my contacts, so no worries there.
Also had my apps listed on "my apps" page and amazon apps, so since
I did have to do a "factory reset" and after spending most of the day
re-doing everything,

I now have most things back to "normal".

I appreciate the responses!!

Yup - I will just have to live with less apps, I guess - at least for now!

Thanks again,

Power button + up volume= recovery = red triangle.
red triangle+power button+up volume= other menu
other menu+clear cache=other menu
other menu+reboot system= happy

By pressing power + volume up to get into recovery mode, I only get the andriod robot with a red triangle. And then stack again.
And nothing takes me anywhere

that is because you do not have a custom recovery. are you rooted? what are you trying to do?

What does rooted mean?

When I start my android tab, it stacks on android logo. Thus, I've thought that I should do hard reset by pressing vol+ & power with holding, but what I've got by that is a laying android robot with red triangle.
