welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
i moved you to the rooting section, since that is what you are asking about i will try and explain. but first we need to know some info as to what you have on your phone so that we can pint you in the right direction.

we need some info from the bootloader. so power your phone off (make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen you need to find the hboot info.

if you hboot is 2.10 or less then use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if your hboot is 2.15 or 2.16 then use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if your hboot is 2.18 then use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

as far as rooting and what it is. here is a great read on this topic:
http://androidforums.com/faqs/443432-what-root-being-rooted-mean.html

and here is some terminology:
http://androidforums.com/faqs/443075-root-terminology.html

and as far as what you can do when your phone is rooted. you can flash any custom rom that you like. you will have better battery life. you can overclock your phone or undder clock to help battery life. you can delete bloatware or flash roms that have them removed. you can change the splashscreen (htc white screen) or change the bootanimation(sprints animation) to whatever you want. you can even create your own if you like. and also there is free tethering as well. the list can go on. but those are the ones i think are important.

and yes we can probably fix your lag on your phone as well.

hope this helps. let us know if you have more questions.
