Help Help with 2 email apps

My new note has a gmail app and another email app it must be Samsung's? It seems like 1 of the apps(I think it's the Gmail one) is coming through as popup email(I don't know if that's what is actually called) the email app that I like I think is actually Samsungs email app. How do I get rid of the Gmail app but still get pop up emails?or do I just live with both? Thanks

I think in general most people prefer the GMail app to the manufacturer e-mail apps. One thing to keep in mind with the Note 2 though is only the Samsung e-mail app will work with the SPen hover preview.

I'm going to use both for a bit and see which I prefer.

The thing I found annoying with the Gmail app is the compose area is only 1 line. It just seems overly messy looking to me. Is there a way to adjust that? So it is cleaner and more simplified like the Samsung app? And get a larger typing area?

why dont you set up your gmail as a new account in the sammy email app then stop updates from the gmail app? all in one place then

That's exactly what I did.
I had to completely stop updates from the Gmail app because even with 4hr intervals every email I got was coming in immediately. Strange. But I think I got it figured out. Now if I could just get my emails to come through immediately on the sam app during the hours I want them to we will be in business. Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.

I prefer the samsung app as you cant change the theme for gmail (i like a dark theme) but wish i could set the sync better on samsung, i would like it to poll every minute not every 5 but thats the lowest it will go.

How do you get the hover preview to work?, cant seem to get mine to do anything?

I have actually just set up my gmail in the other email client as an exchange activesync account. The Gmail one is set to sync only calendar (I don't use the gmail calendar but have an additional UK holidays calendar inthere)

I just went to New Account->Exchange Active Sync.

I typed in my gmail address and password and hit next. It did give an error and told me to set it up manually but had correctly populated the server as m.google.com. I just pressed Next and Presto.

I also set my account up as an Exchange account using m.google.com so I can get push e-mail.

You can hover the pen over the subject or content. If you are hovered over the subject it will display the subject and if over the next line it will show the e-mail body. As was reported above me I guess you need to have Airview on in the SPen settings to get this feature to work.

This is of course, if the subject is longer than is currently displayed. If all of the subject is already displayed there is nothing to pop up.

Hello Everyone!

Getting ready to move from the GS3 to the Note 2 in two weeks when it arrives on the AT&T network.

So, let me make sure I understand this correctly...

The S-Pen hovering feature only works with the Samsung email app?

That's a bit discouraging. I use the GMAIL app, or at least one of them (the one with the closed envelope and red @ seal).

How does the Samsung Email app compare to the email app I described above?

I hate the fact that the GMAIL app I am using only polls every 5 minutes. See the Samsung app sadly is the same.

Any chance the S-Pen hovering feature will be made available on the GMAIL apps anytime soon?

The Samsung email app can be set to use Push notification so you can be notified as soon as you receive mail. I prefer it actually. Also I have other accounts connected to it via Exchange Activesync (also used to connect to gmail with the server m.google.com). This allows me to view all my mails from all of my accounts in one place.

So you can actually get your emails in intervals under 5 minutes?

With push you should get the notification on your phone around the same time it appears in your web interface. There may be a small delay depending on connection but you may even sometimes get the phone notification first.

Of course there is only one way to find out. If you already have an android phone that supports active sync with push in its native mail client then just test it.

I have to actually set it up as an iMap account (which is essentially PUSH) to work with my Mac account.

Previously you stated: Getting ready to move from the GS3 to the Note 2 in two weeks when it arrives on the AT&T network.

The S3 supports activesync with push. To set it up just add a new account, put in your gmail address and password and hit go. If it pops up to tell you that you must complete it manually it should then populate all the correct settings so you just press next. If not the server is m.google.com.

Bob's your uncle. Push Gmail.

In fact the S3 and Note 2 have pretty identical native mail clients.

I am using the GMAIL app (or the one with the closed envelope and red @ seal)
and that is working great for iMap PUSH though it still only does it in 5-minute intervals.

What would I do differently with the Samsung email app that would push my email in under 5 minutes as it arrives?

IMAP is not push, it polls the server for updates at intervals. With Push the server sends the update to your phone when it has one. Active sync can be set to Push, interval or manual only on a per account basis.

In the end it's up to you. I prefer the native app. If you prefer the Gmail one then that's fair enough.

Yeah, not certain I can set the iCloud Mac email for Push. That is, unless I can, and I am just misunderstanding you.

In any case, appreciate the time you have spent helping.

Ah, yes. Now I see the issue. You are not trying to access a Gmail account but an iCloud account. Yes, that probably does not have an Activesync connector.

In that case the only real difference between the 2 would be look and feel, including the Airview on the Note 2 with the native client. For that account anyway. It does offer more connection options such as the Activesync where possible but if you have no email accounts that support it that's by the by.

The native one uses less battery of course, just by having a dark background rather than white which becomes more of an issue the bigger the screen if you use it a lot.
