hey guys so i have the optimus v and its just filling up with useless updates and getting slower so i want to put a custom rom on it, well haha how? i started reading some of the guides and my head started spinning. i do have the computer cable and did manage to find the OS which is 2.2.1 and i think i hav a zv4 version (last 3 digits of the sw version) also i tried this adb thing and maybe its me or my computer but i just kept getting error after error with it.

so if some1 can dumb this down for me i would greatly appreiate it.

when time comes for it the goal of the rom i would like would be to make it faster, more storage and lose the useless apps (the virgin moblie bloat i guess its called?)

Follow the simplified root and recovery guide to the letter. Gingerbreak should obtain root. This is the easy part! The guide will tell you step by step what to download and where to put it. I just rooted a couple of weeks ago for the same reason and am running CM7and it is so much better than I had hoped! Any questions you have will be answered quick on here. This is the best forum out there!

yep im noob...cant get past the 2nd step (installing? the gingerbreak.apk) i mean do i put the .zip onto the sd card? but from there wut? i hav file manager on phone but it keeps saying to install it so how?

Gingerbreak should be an apk file, not a zip. Put it on the sd card and then click on it using your file manager. Click install and it will then show up like a regular app. Open and run it and you should obtain root!

well wut im download from the links are .zip and within the .zip are files lik .dex .arsc and .rsf and some others but no .apk am i doing something wrong (lol obviously i am)

i think ur missing wut im sayn...i have no .apk see the file i downloaded is named .apk BUT its rly a .zip...and when i put it ont he phone and use file manager it just opens the .zip and just opens the files within the .zip... it doesnt give me a install option... w8 do i hav the wrong file manager program?

ok nvm i looked around and found the .apk file... now which rom do i want? looking for space and speed so any recomedations?

leslieann's Harmonia (Froyo) or Harmonia 2 (Gingerbread). Both are stable, contain no bloat, and are the fastest I've encountered. It's definitely the ROM for one who wants to personalize their phone from the floor up. Whichever OS you want is yours to choose.

The Harmonia's are pretty fast! backside is just as fast though and I think more customizability. but Right now, I'm on Cold as Ice, it's an Android 4.0 ICS rom that was made for the Optimus S. I like it because it looks really slick, it's very customizable and the only thing not working is bluetooth for calling.

FWI: The zip file you downloaded probably had the Gingerbreak.apk and a few other necessary files/images. All that was needed was for you to extract the contents of the zip with a file manager. Usually long pressing the zip will pop up several options, extract being one of them.
You might want to extract the contents of the zip just to see what was in it?

One set is missing after rooting, and that is install a custom recovery. I recommend either JerryScripts CWM-Green-Recovery or my CWM-Blue-Recovery. You can find the download link to either one here in the Installation Prerequisites section of the page. Then use FlashImageGUI to install the recovery.

After that download the rom of you choice, you can find a list of them on the same page the recoveries are. any ICS rom (Android 4.0+) are not a good choice for starting out with as none of them are stable release yet.

Another very good place to look is in the All Things Root Guide sticky. You never know what you might find in there.
