Help HELP with setting up voice mail

I have a HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T. I've looked at the directions AT&T HTC Inspire 4G* - Set up voicemail that they give me to set up my voice mail but it's not working. They say the automated system will guide me through the setup process but all I get is a voice asking me to dial a 10 digit number to call someone. There's nothing there to set up a mailbox for me.

I hope somebody can help me.

Settings > Call > Voicemail settings. Try setting them from there instead of the Phone > 1 thing.

Voicemail is not a phone feature. Your VM is your carrier's VM system unless you've opted for a different VM service. If you're having to dial a 10 digit number when you dial your VM then your VM probably isn't correctly set up. In any case, you need to call your carrier.
 
probably your simplest way is to call 611 (AT&T cell help, and choose option 0 (zero). Right now their helpers are very polite and efficient. Someone should be able to guide you thru' the process.
 
This happened to my mother & I's too. Here's what to do...

Call AT&T (611 from your phone) and tell then you previously had a so-and-so phone (I am assuming Iphone as that is what my mom and i both had) and you need to set your voice mail up as the vm didn't transfer over. It's a quick step.

The lady tried to explain it to us... apparently the iphone system has a voicemail of it's own & its a different sort of vm for the inspire. She told us many times when you get your phone...especially if you get it from a different retailer other than AT&T they will not switch it over correctly.
