Root Help

I just installed warm 2.2 after rooting my phone for the first time last night. All was well but my storm8 games were forcing close. So I wiped and flashed from scratch I think, but now when i hit menu settings its says linked program no longer on your phone. I also would like to know what a kernal is and where or not I should use one?

If you had your games on your SD card and you wiped, it likely can't find the link. If you made a backup in Titanium Backup you should be able to restore the app.

The kernel helps to regulate the processors speed. In other words if you want to over clock or under clock you can do so through the kernel. MOST of the new ROMS have the best kernel for them baked into them already. Many do not even require SetCPU to function properly. You are using a kernel whether you know it or not. Go to menu>settings>about phone>software and you will be able to see what kernel you are using. Some kernels absolutely make your phone SCREAM with speed at the expense of your battery. Some kernels make your phone laggy, but your battery will last 2 days. The BEST kernels are the ones that will do little of both. If I use KingKernels or hydrakernels and try to over clock past 1.13 my phone locks up. If you flash one and it locks your phone up, pull the battery and reboot. Hope that helps.

That helped alot, Thank for the respones. Im all good now, I still have a few ?'s tho, one is after I installed the new rom should i boot in recovery and wipe data and cache to clear out installation files?
and What are the purpose of rom manager and super user?

ROM Manager is nice because (generally but not always) the best and most stable ROMS are there to be downloaded and installed much easier. It will ask you if you want to wipe data and cache prior to flashing the new ROM. Super User is what grants you permission to do all of the customization that you are doing to your phone. Without the SuperUser Permission, you phone is a stock phone with no special abilities. Anything that requires root access (wireless tether, setcpu, adfree android, etc.) all need to have their superuser permissions set before you can use them.

As far as should you or should you NOT wipe your data and cache before installing a new ROM, it's really a matter of are you installing a entirely new ROM or an update to your current ROM. Also are you going from an EVO based ROM or a stock based ROM. All in all, if you want to be safe and have as few force closes and bugs, wiping data and cache are generally a good idea. Always always always back up your current ROM and apps. When you do a restore of apps, ONLY restore apps and not data and NEVER restore system apps, it will cause too many headaches.

Ok, great, thanks for filling me in, im with you so far. does it hurt your phone or take up alot of memory tryin out new roms and switching back and forth?

Open it>Download ROM> Select which ROM to download>It will come and say download complete wipe data and cache and backup current ROM (I usually check all options here> It asks to go to recovery to install ROM (hit OK), it does it's thing and reboots with your new ROM.

Thanks you've been a big help getting me back on track. I appreciate your time! I coincidently deleted swype with the mic off my mem card and now im trying like hell to find the apk for it, if you know where to look by chance that would be super but i know how locked down it is.

Yeah careful asking for that on here. The folks here have been warned in no uncertain way from Swype's creators that any direct or indirect Swype distribution is grounds for a copyright infringement lawsuit. Since that time, the mention of looking for Swype outside of the Beta test is taboo. I'm sure you can find it if you look at all. Good luck to you and enjoy your ROM flashing.

well Im actually digging the new ginger bread keyboard so its a moot point anyway. Are you rooted and if so what rom do you like the best?

Yes I'm rooted. Rooted the beginning of August to get 2.2 early. I've used almost all of the ROMS available at one time or another. I don't like ROMs w/o Sense. I am currently using Virtuous 3.0.1 with IncredibleRevoulution Skin on it. Take a look here --> What I'm Running and How To Set It Up Yourself . Scroll down to my posts in this thread and you can see what I'm running and if you want to use it, I've included all links to the information in that thread.

I really like this ROM. It's stable and very snappy. I like MIUI but it's WAY to buggy for me. My favorite ROM has been the Desire Z, but even though the camera and camcorder has been fixed, it's still way to buggy too. That is the ROM I will be using if everything ever gets stable. Try as many as you can. Maybe you will like ROMS like SkyRaider. It is very stable as well, but I don't like not having Sense (like I said above).

so say I add a componant to warm 2.2 like transparent task bar or a font pack and decide i dont like them how would I revert back to before I flashed em?

Just do a backup in ROM Manager of your current ROM. You can do the same through a Nandroid Backup, but IMHO ROM Manager makes the whole process easier.

Open ROM Manager>Scroll Down to Backup and Select it> A window pops up with today's date (I always rename it what my current ROM is i.e. Virtuous 3dot1dot0- don't use decimals it doesn't like them)> hit OK and it backs it up. NOW do any mods you want and if you don't like them, open ROM Manager (OR if it won't boot up go into clockwork mod and recovery) and do a system restore. Select the ROM you just backed up and you are good to go.

Just put the mod's zip file on your sd card, reboot phone into Recovery.

Hit "apply update from .zip file on sd card" then click on "choose zip form sdcard" and select which one.

Thats the easiest way im doing it since Rom Manager wont open for me. :P

I just saw your PM bmwhartgeM3. I'm glad you got your issues figured out. You'll usually get a better response for an issue if you post a thread that way you'll get the whole forum trying to help versus one member. Also, as far as ROM Manager goes, I would suggest flashing and backing up via Clockwork a few times so you know exactly what your doing. I personally like using CWM better than ROM Manager. I like flashing and wiping things myself versus having an app do it for me.

Guys thanks again, Im glad I got all the help I needed here. I normally lurk and try to self educate but sometimes when you get hands on things get a bit overwhelming if you have never attempted something before. Thanks for everybody's help.
