Hi!

Lurker
I was fortunate enough to get a new Nexus S 4g from a friend, and just unlocked it. Looking forward to many things =]

Anyone know in particular what this phone gains from being unlocked? I heard from a friend about "layers of software" being removed. Even the packaging from Sprint speaks of it. Is there a FAQ (I assume there is) on this subject?

anyways, greetz!

Welcome to the Android Forums.

You'll get the best answers from other users in the Nexus S 4G forum.

There are different kinds of "unlock". There is carrier (un)lock which allows you to move the phone to another wireless network simply by using a different sim card. Then there is bootloader unlock which permits the installation of alternate systems, also know as flashing a custom rom. And then there is rooting, which is unlocking the OS itself by gaining administrative access to the file system.

The benefits are that you can do just about anything with your phone. The dangers are you can do just about anything TO your phone. Good luck.

Welcome to AndroidForums, deltr!

(I'm a little jealous of the Nexus S 4G, btw (although I still really love my DX)).

You'll find a ton of great info here at AF.

Cheers!
